Adventurous Outdoor Bucket List Activities

Cycle Down a Volcano

Cycling down Haleakala at sunrise has gained massive popularity for those who love unique adventurous activities. Where else will you get the chance to ride down the side of a 10,023 ft volcano while watching the sun emerge over the horizon?!

Making your way to the summit of the volcano by car in the early hours of the morning, you will stay to watch as the sun makes its first appearance. Once the sun begins to rise and illuminate the crater in a magical glow, you’ll begin the epic bike ride to the base of the volcano.

The most convenient way to have this experience is to book a tour that includes everything from hotel pick up/drop off to bike rental and a professional guide.

Just don’t forget to include a warm jacket on your Maui packing list, it’s freezing up there during sunrise/sunset!

Go Ziplining

Ziplining is a fun activity for the whole family and there are several locations on Maui where ziplining is offered. North Shore Zipline is located in Haiku on Maui’s North Shore and is considered one of the island’s top rated spots.

North Shore Zipline combines a bit of Maui’s, amazing scenery and an adrenaline rush to give you a thrilling experience you’ll never forget. Taking a zipline tour will have you soaring through the treetops of a lush tropical valley while enjoying panoramic views of the jungle and ocean.

This popular zipline tour features a series of 7 ziplines, suspension bridges and viewing platforms. The tour takes place on a historic property which once served as a Marine training base during WWII.

Taking a ziplining tour is one of the best things to do in Maui for people of all ages who are seeking a memorable adventure while surrounded by the breathtaking natural beauty of the island.

Hike the Lahaina Pali Trail

This challenging hiking trail boasts sweeping views over central Maui and has a history that goes back over 200 years. Follow this scenic route that leads you up a steep trail toward the Kaheawa Wind Farm before descending down the other side of the hill. If you complete the full trail, you will end at a different location than where you started.

Instead of completing the entire hike which covers around 10 miles and takes most of the day, most people hike up to the wind farm and return to the same trailhead. I started from the eastern trailhead (near Maalaea), hiked up to the wind farm to watch the sunset and then hiked back down in the dark. It took around 3 hours to complete.

Why does the Lahaina Pali Trail deserve a place on your Maui bucket list? The scenery on this hike from start to finish is truly breathtaking, especially if you do it during sunset! Just don’t forget to bring a head torch, you’ll really need it to navigate the way back in the dark.

This was my favourite hike during my time on Maui. While it’s not an easy trail, it is 100% worth it if you’re up for a challenge. Find more info about planning this hike at the AllTrails website.

Hike the Pipiwai Trail

Located in the eastern part of Maui, the Pipiwai Trail winds through a tropical rainforest passing by impressive waterfalls, enchanting bamboo forests, and lush vegetation. The hike is considered moderate-difficult and takes around 2-3 hours to complete.

The best part of this hike is reaching Waimoku Falls at the end of the trail, a stunning 400 ft (122 meters) waterfall that plunges into a pool below. The sight of the waterfall is awe-inspiring and makes for a rewarding endpoint of the hike.

If you’re planning to drive the Road to Hana, you’ll find the trailhead along the Hana Highway about 15 minutes past the town of Hana. Due to the outstanding natural scenery, this hiking trail has become quite popular and is known to get busy.

Make an early start if you hope to have a crowd-free experience on the Pipiwai Trail. Entry fees apply due to the trail’s location within Haleakala National Park.

Hike the Sliding Sands Trail

The Sliding Sands Trail in Haleakala National Park offers a hiking experience like no other, leading you into the volcano’s crater while passing by cinder cones and colourful volcanic rocks.

Beginning at the visitor center at the volcano’s summit, the trail zig zags through an otherworldly landscape and descends to the crater floor. This is one of Maui’s most beautiful hiking trails that is certain to leave a lasting memory.

The Sliding Sands Trail is considered a difficult out-and-back hike that covers 11.5 miles and takes around 7 hours to complete. There is the option to camp inside one of the cabins in the crater however this needs to be booked far ahead of time (up to 6 months in advance).

Instead of completing the entire hike when I visited Maui, I simply followed the trail for around 30 minutes to get a closer view of the cinder cones and admire the stunning scenery before returning to the visitor center in time to watch the sunset from Haleakala’s summit.

Hike to the 3 Waterfalls at Twin Falls

The Twin Falls Hike in Maui follows an easy trail that leads you through a lush rainforest to a series of gorgeous cascading waterfalls and pools. Seeing as this hike is located along the Road to Hana, you could either include it as a stop on your drive or visit it on a separate occasion.

The hike itself is not long or difficult which makes this trail perfect for all ages and abilities. Along the hike, you will encounter three separate waterfalls. The first one is known as “Twin Falls,” which is a relatively small cascade.

Continue walking to come across a second and finally third waterfall at the end of the trail. The third waterfall, also known as Caveman Falls, is particularly scenic and features a perfect natural swimming pool which is great to hop in and cool down on a hot day.

The parking lot costs $10 and fills up very quickly so it’s best to get there early to secure a spot. There is also a food stand in the parking lot selling refreshing smoothies, fresh juices, coconuts and baked goods. Allow around 1 hour to see the three waterfalls and complete the walk.

Food & Cultural Experiences for your Maui Bucket List

Attend a Luau

No trip to Maui is complete without attending an authentic Hawaiian luau. It’s one of the best ways to immerse yourself in Hawaiian traditions and enjoy a night of fun, food, and entertainment.

A sunset luau on the beach is truly a magical cultural experience that everyone should have during their holiday in Maui. Throughout the evening you will enjoy a traditional Hawaiian feast accompanied by exotic dancing and fire twirling performances as the sun sinks below the horizon.

One of the island’s top rated luau’s takes place on the oceanfront in Kaanapali, just 10 minutes north of Lahaina. It is a very popular event and tends to sell out, especially during high season in Maui. Be sure to book your luau tickets well in advance to secure your evening of choice and avoid disappointment.

Learn History at the Sugar Museum

Take a step back in time through Maui’s rich history in the sugar industry. The Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum is located in what used to be the largest sugarcane factory in Hawaii, the Puunene Mill. This former mill now houses the museum, offering a historical setting that adds to the immersive experience.

Visiting the Maui Sugar Museum is a must for first-time visitors to the island. It allows you to learn all about the history and significance of the sugar making industry while providing a fascinating insight into how it shaped the island. Inside the museum you will find historical artefacts, documents, pictures and even a scale model of a sugar cane crushing machine.

You can find this museum just 10 minutes from the Kahului Airport and you should allow around 45 minutes – 1 hour for a self-guided tour. A visit to the Sugar Museum is one of the best things to do in Maui and a great activity if you get stuck with a rainy day on the island.

Opening Hours: Monday – Thursday 10am – 2pm (closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday)

Admission: $7/adults, $5/seniors, and $2/children 6-12

Taste Pineapple Wine at MauiWine

MauiWine is situated on a historic property on the slopes of Haleakala, which creates a unique microclimate that is ideal for growing grapes. The drive to the winery is very scenic boasting epic views over the rest of island, you’ll want to allow some time to stop and take it all in.

MauiWine gives visitors an opportunity to experience a wine tasting journey that showcases the local wines crafted from Maui-grown grapes. Take a seat on their outdoor patio and order a flight of wine to get a sample of each variety. If you’ve never heard of pineapple wine before, this is your chance to give it a try!

This is the perfect place to pick up a few bottles to take home so you can sip a glass of Hawaiian wine and reminisce of your time on Maui. Be sure to make a reservation online before you go to avoid waiting in a queue for a table.

Be sure to visit MauiWine during your five days on Maui

Try Hawaiian Shave Ice

During your time in Maui, you’re bound to come across many shops selling Hawaiian shave ice. Stopping to indulge in shave ice is an iconic Maui experience that you really can’t miss out on.

What is shave ice, you might be wondering? Well, it’s not the same thing as a snow cone. Hawaiian shave ice is made from finely shaved ice, resulting in a light and fluffy texture. It is then generously drizzled with a variety of tropical fruit syrups, such as pineapple, coconut, passion fruit, mango etc.

With several locations throughout Maui, Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice is one of the island’s most popular chains where you’ll find high-quality shave ice made from natural fruit syrups and pure cane sugar.

Eat a Poke Bowl

For another quintessential Hawaiian food experience, one must not forget to try a poke bowl when in Maui. The popularity of the poke bowl has spread far beyond Hawaii’s shores, becoming a beloved dish in many parts of the world.

The classic poke bowl typically consists of cubes of raw fish (such as tuna, salmon, or octopus) marinated in a soy-based sauce, often with sesame oil, green onions, seaweed, and sesame seeds. It is then served over a bed of steamed rice and sometimes accompanied by toppings like avocado, cucumber, edamame, or pickled vegetables.

You won’t have to go far to locate a poke bowl in Maui but if you’re seeking some of the island’s top-rated spots, don’t miss Tobi’s Poke & Shave Ice, South Maui Fish Company, and Maui Poke.

Be sure to eat a Poke Bowl during your Maui vacation

Have Dinner at Mama’s Fish House

Mama’s Fish House is one of the island’s most famous restaurants known for its high quality Hawaiian cuisine and picturesque location on Maui’s North Shore.

Dining at Mama’s Fish House is more than just “going out for dinner”. The restaurant embraces Hawaiian culture and traditions, offering a unique experience for visitors through its décor, music, and menu items that highlight local flavours and dishes.

It provides the ultimate setting for any special occasion giving you the chance to create cherished memories against the backdrop of Maui’s natural beauty.

You can expect only the freshest locally caught seafood dishes on a menu that changes throughout the year based on seasons. The menu also features delicious tropical cocktails and decadent deserts to round off your meal with.

Due to its popularity, it is essential that you reserve your table well in advance. I’m talking around 6 months ahead of time! If you’re planning to celebrate a milestone at Mama’s Fish House, make sure to book it in asap to avoid disappointment.

Snorkel at Molokini Crater & Turtle Town

Taking a snorkeling day trip to Molokini Crater is one of the most popular things to do in Maui. This crescent shaped caldera is located a few miles off the south coast of the island and is known for world-class snorkeling conditions and pristine visibility.

Molokini Crater is an ancient volcanic crater that was formed more than 100 thousand years ago. The unique corals and colourful marine life that inhabit the crater attract scuba divers and snorkelers from all over the world. It’s isolated location offers a snorkeling experience that you won’t find anywhere else.

The only way to reach Molokini Crater is by booking yourself onto a boat tour. There are many catamaran tours available and most of them also include a stop at Turtle Town. This is where you’ll get the chance to snorkel surrounded by sea turtles, don’t forget your GoPro!

Take a Free Diving Course

For beginners and seasoned enthusiasts, free diving is an exciting and exhilarating way to explore the underwater world of Maui. If free diving is something you’ve always been curious to try, there is really no better place to learn than the stunning Hawaiian waters.

Maui offers several shallow free dive sites which are perfect for beginners. These locations typically have clear waters, gentle currents, and a variety of marine life to observe.

As a beginner, it is essential to take a certified free diving course with a reputable instructor. These courses will teach you the necessary safety protocols, breath-holding techniques, and how to equalize your ears as you descend.

I can personally recommend Freedive Ohana which is owned and operated by two passionate female free divers who have years of experience free diving and instructing students in Maui.

There are several courses offered through Freedive Ohana for both beginners and intermediate free divers. The courses will teach you the theory and practical skills required to safely enjoy free diving whether its your first time or you’re looking to take your skills to the next level.

Go On a Whale Watching Cruise

A trip to Maui is not complete without going on a whale watching cruise, however there is a catch. Whale watching is a seasonal activity which is only possible from December to April.

This is when the humpback whales migrate south from Alaska to breed in Hawaii’s tropical waters. If you happen to be planning your trip during these months, you’ll be able to book a boat cruise which takes you right up close to the playful humpbacks.

I absolutely loved the small group eco-raft tour which brings you right up close to the whales at eye-level. The guides on my tour were super knowledgeable and gave us a detailed insight into the whale’s breeding behaviour and migration journey.

The best part was that we saw so many whales we actually lost count! I booked the early morning tour which departs from Lahaina Harbor at 6:45am and lasts for around 2 hours. There are several other time slots available throughout the day but you’ll want to book it in advance to ensure you get the desired date/time.

Adventure Underwater in a Submarine

For those who wish to explore the underwater world without getting wet, doing a submarine tour offers a fantastic way to connect with the ocean and its marine life.

The Atlantis Submarine tour departs from the Lahaina Harbor and descends 130 ft to the ocean floor, giving you a window into the vibrant marine ecosystem of Maui. You’ll be amazed as you peer out of the submarine’s circular portholes passing by shipwrecks, reef sharks, and an abundance of Hawaiian fish.

Throughout the submarine tour, a knowledgeable guide will provide an educational commentary sharing facts about the marine life, coral reefs, geology, and history of the area.

A submarine tour is another Maui bucket list experience that will leave you with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for the diversity of Maui’s marine life.

Learn How to Surf

With consistent and reliable surf conditions throughout the year, it’s no surprise that Maui is one of the world’s top surfing destinations.

Maui is a great place for beginners to try surfing for the first time as there are plenty of spots with gentle, rolling waves that are well-suited for beginners. These mellow waves provide a safe and manageable learning environment for those new to the sport.

If you’re interested to try your hand at surfing, I would recommend avoiding large group sessions and go for a private one-on-one lesson. Getting personalized hands-on instruction gives you a good chance to stand up on your first time surfing.

Check out this private surf lesson for two which is perfect if you want to take a friend or partner along. It includes a private 90 minute session for two people with an experienced instructor to guide you through your first session.

Try Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Surfing is not for everyone but stand up paddle boarding or SUP is a great alternative if you’re still interested to try a new water sport. SUP is very popular in Maui, in fact Hawaii is where the sport first began in the 1940’s!

SUP is a fun way to get a different perspective of the island’s beautiful coastline and if you’re lucky, you might even spot sea turtles or humpback whales! There are plenty of places to rent equipment on the island. Look for rental shops near the beaches or in towns like Lahaina and Kihei.

SUP is not a challenging water sport, even for beginners however if it’s something you’ve never done before, taking an SUP tour is a great way to start.

Snorkel From the Beach

I know I’ve already mentioned doing a snorkeling boat trip on this bucket list however snorkeling from the beach is also something that can’t be missed in Maui.

With so many beautiful coral reefs located near the shore, this is an easy and inexpensive way to encounter marine life in Maui without needing to take a boat.

Some of Maui’s most popular locations for beach snorkeling include Kapalua Bay, Black Rock in Ka’anapali, Napili Bay, Maluaka Beach (Turtle Town) and last but not certainly not least, Honolua Bay. These prime snorkel spots will bring you face to face with sea turtles, reef sharks and schools of colourful Hawaiian fish.

One of Maui’s top-rated snorkel locations can be found on the island’s top west corner and is known for its crystal clear water and abundance of sea animals. Honolua Bay is not the easiest to access with limited parking spots, a hike to get to the beach and a shore lined with rocks.

However these minor inconveniences will prove to be worth the effort once you witness the incredible quality of snorkeling to be had in this gorgeous bay.

Go Turtle Spotting

One of the top things to do in Maui for free is watching sea turtles in the wild! These gentle creatures are commonly spotted in many areas around the island yet there are several spots where you’ll be guaranteed turtle sightings.

Sea turtles love to hang out near rocky outcrops and coral reefs but they can often be seen basking in the sun right on the beach! Some of the best places to see turtles on the beach in Maui are Ho’okipa Beach and Makena Landing.

If you’re looking to swim alongside sea turtles, head over to Turtle Town at Maluaka Beach or hop in the water at Black Rock at the north end of Ka’anapali Beach. Don’t forget your snorkel, mask and GoPro!

Take a Day Trip to Lanai

Taking a boat tour to the neighbouring island of Lanai offers a fantastic opportunity to spot a diverse array of marine life. The waters of Lanai are home to spinner dolphins which can be seen frolicking in the ocean year round.

These playful sea creatures are often seen in large pods and are known to approach boats, making for an exciting encounter. If you happen to visit Maui outside of whale watching season, this boat cruise makes an excellent alternative.

With vibrant coral reefs, Lanai is known for amazing snorkeling conditions. During this day trip, you’ll get a chance to swim alongside tropical fish and sea turtles on a guided snorkeling tour led by a marine naturalist.

The boat tour departs from Lahaina and lasts 5 hours, including a continental breakfast, a BBQ lunch and snacks/drinks throughout the day.

Must-See Natural Wonders of Maui

Watch the Sunset on Haleakala

This is perhaps the most unique activity that should be at the top of everyone’s Maui bucket list: watching the sunset on Haleakala! There are few places in the world where you can stand at the top of a volcano and watch the sunset above the clouds. It’s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime type of vibe.

Over the years, watching the sunrise on Haleakala has become extremely popular which means you’ll be sharing that special moment with crowds of other tourists. Not to mention, you need to make a reservation in advance or join an organized tour if you want to watch the sunrise.

For a better experience and equally amazing views, I would recommend watching the sunset from the top of Haleakala instead! This way you don’t have to make a reservation, there are far less crowds and you don’t have to wake up at 3am (who wants to do that while you’re on holiday?!)

For more detailed info, you can find my complete guide about how to watch the sunset on Haleakala here

See the Lahaina Banyan Tree

One of the main attractions to see when you visit the town of Lahaina on Maui’s west coast is the iconic banyan tree. This remarkable tree is one of the largest banyan trees in the world, taking up an entire city block and standing an impressive 60 feet tall.

The banyan tree dates back to 1873 when it was imported from India and planted in front of the Lahaina Courthouse. The tree’s most unique feature is the 16 separate trunks which are all connected to the same tree. The banyan tree’s large canopy provides a welcoming shaded area for those seeking a break from the hot Hawaiian sun.

The banyan tree has become a symbol of Lahaina and a gathering place for both locals and visitors. Tourists flock to the banyan tree to marvel at its size and capture photos of its awe-inspiring presence.

It’s really unlike anything you’ve ever seen before an absolute must-see on any Maui itinerary!

Marvel at the Nakalele Blowhole

I’ve you’ve never seen a blowhole before, you should go ahead and add the Nakalele Blowhole to your Maui bucket list. This fascinating natural wonder is a sea cave located on the northern coast of Maui.

When the waves crash into the cave, the water is forced upward, creating a powerful geyser-like spray that shoots high into the air. It’s a spectacular sight to witness and one of the most active blowholes in Hawaii.

To reach the blowhole, you can follow a short but scenic 1.25 mile out-and-back hike from the parking area. The trail takes you along a rugged coastline with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

On the hike to Nakalele Blowhole, you’ll also encounter the famous “Heart-Shaped Rock,” a heart-shaped rock formation that has become a popular spot for photographers and a symbol of love for many visitors.

Thanks to its secluded location away from the major tourist attractions of Maui, a visit to the Nakalele Blowhole offers a chance to get off the beaten path and appreciate the island’s natural beauty without large crowds.

Visit a Black Sand Beach

The Black Sand Beach on Maui’s far east corner is one of the best stops on the Road to Hana. The contrast of the dark volcanic sand against a backdrop of lush green jungle creates a scene that resembles a painting.

The beach is located in a small cove within Wai’anapanapa State Park, just before entering the town of Hana. In this beautiful state park you will also find sea caves, blow holes, rock arches and awe-inspiring coastal views.

The scenery here is breathtaking and it quickly became one of my favourite places to visit in Maui!

Getting to the famous Black Sand Beach requires driving the Road to Hana for 2 hours. Before embarking on your day trip, it’s important to note that you have to reserve a timeslot to enter the Black Sand Beach.

If you don’t book your visit to the park online beforehand, you will be turned away at the entrance. See the official state park website to make your booking online in advance.

Visit a Lavender Farm

Finding a lavender farm in Maui was an unexpected surprise on my last visit to the island. Situated in Maui’s Upcountry, on the slopes of Haleakala, the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm showcases a spectacular view over the west mountains and coastline below.

The lavender blooms from June – August however there is a beautiful botanical garden that features Hawaiian plants and flowers year round. For only $3 per person, this hidden gem of Maui is well worth a visit for the views alone!

Strolling through the botanical gardens with a backdrop of west Maui results in many awesome photo opportunities. Even though I visited outside of lavender season, the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm was one of my favourite Instagram spots in Maui.

While you’re there, you can stop in at the gift shop to pick up some lavender products or grab a tea/coffee and take in the incredible scenery. This place is a real must-see on your Maui bucket list!

Before you go, note that it’s only open from Friday – Monday every week (closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). The opening hours are 10am – 4pm, find more info about planning your visit to the lavender farm here.

Drive the Road to Hana

Driving the Road to Hana is perhaps one of the most iconic things to do in Maui. The winding Hana Highway curves along many single-lane bridges and hairpin turns with jaw-dropping scenery around every corner.

On this world-famous drive you’ll pass by picturesque waterfalls, lush jungles and gorgeous beaches. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful drives I’ve ever done and it definitely lives up to the hype.

Most people aim to complete the drive in a single day which makes for a very long and busy day trip but it is possible. If you have the extra time, spreading it out over two days is definitely the way to go and will make for a more enjoyable experience.

You can rent a car and drive the Road to Hana on your own or book an organized tour for a stress-free and relaxing day trip. If you want to drive, make sure to check out my Road to Hana guide to help plan every detail of this bucket list drive.

Explore the Town of Paia

Located on Maui’s northern coast, Paia is a charming surfing town that offers a unique and laid-back experience. The town is known for its bohemian and eclectic atmosphere.

It’s a hub for artists, surfers, and health-conscious individuals. The town exudes a relaxed hippie-inspired vibe that attracts people from all walks of life.

Paia’s main street, Baldwin Avenue, is lined with colourful boutique shops, art galleries, and local crafts stores. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a few hours of browsing locally made goods, from clothing and swimwear to jewellery and souvenirs.

Just a short distance from the town center, Baldwin Beach is a beautiful and easily accessible beach. It’s a popular spot for swimming, picnicking, and sunbathing.

Despite its small size, Paia offers a diverse food scene. You can find everything from delicious seafood and traditional Hawaiian fare to vegetarian and organic options. I can personally recommend stopping at Paia Fish Market for a great selection of fresh seafood dishes, reasonable prices and a casual dining experience.

Overall, Paia deserves a place on your Maui bucket list as it offers a taste of authentic Hawaiian culture, natural beauty, and a relaxed vibe that will make your Maui vacation memorable.

Hit the Beach

Maui is renowned for its beautiful palm-lined beaches featuring golden sands, crystal-clear waters, and excellent conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing. Spending some time at the beach should be pretty high on your Maui bucket list.

No matter where you’re staying on the island, there is guaranteed to be a beautiful beach close by. If you’re staying on the west coast of Maui, you’ll want to check out Ka’anapali Beach which is known for soft, fluffy sand and inviting turquoise water. It’s also one of the best places to swim with sea turtles in Maui.

If you’re staying in Kihei or Wailea, the three Kamaole Beach Parks are popular spots for families to spend a day swimming and basking in the sun. During my last visit to Maui, my personal favourite beaches were Keawakapu Beach and Palauea Beach.

Located along the coast between Kihei and Wailea, these white sandy beaches feature stunning rows of palm trees and a backdrop of the west Maui mountains. The scenery truly can’t get any better. These beaches are picture perfect and ideal for swimming and lounging in the sand.

Make sure to stay a little while longer and watch an epic Maui sunset from any of the beaches mentioned above!

Visit Iao Valley State Park

This popular state park is home to lush greenery, towering emerald peaks, and flowing waterfalls. For those seeking to witness the verdant landscapes that Hawaii is known for, you must add Iao Valley State Park to your Maui bucket list.

The park is well set up for visitors with paved walking paths, picnic facilities and a visitor center where you can learn about the area’s history, geology, and plant life. This is a great place to start your visit and gain insight into the cultural significance of Iao Valley to the Hawaiian people.

Beyond its stunning scenery, Iao Valley was the site of the Battle of Kepaniwa in the year 1790. This is when two of Hawaii’s iconic leaders and their armies met in the valley and a bloody battle took place.

It changed the course of Hawaiian history and played a big part in shaping the islands as we know them today. The Iao Valley, where the battle took place, became a special and sacred place for the Hawaiian people because of this important event.

Watch the Sunset on the Beach

Maui is famous for its vibrant and mesmerizing sunsets and it goes without saying that the best place to watch them is from the beach.

The combination of pristine beaches and volcanic landscapes with a backdrop of majestic mountains creates the ultimate setting to watch the sky light up in beautiful colours. Photography enthusiasts are in for a real treat here!

My favourite places to catch a beach sunset in Maui are Keawakapu Beach, Palauea Beach, Makena Cove Secret Beach, Kapalua Bay and Ho’okipa Beach Park.

To be honest, you can watch an epic sunset from pretty much anywhere on the island. Some of my other favourite sunset spots were the summit of Haleakala and the Kaheawa Wind Farm on the Lahaina Pali Trail.

Take a Scenic Helicopter Tour

Being able to see the diverse landscapes of Maui from a bird’s eye view is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is sure to take your breath away. Taking a helicopter tour in Maui gives you a different perspective of the island’s famous landmarks and natural wonders.

Marvel at the diverse scenery as you fly over impressive waterfalls, sea cliffs and remote landscapes. This helicopter tour also includes the chance to land and explore a lush rainforest in a remote part of the island where there are no crowds in sight.

The combination of the awe-inspiring scenery, the thrill of flying, and the knowledge gained from the pilot’s commentary creates memories that will stay with you for a lifetime. If you’re looking for a thrilling adventure to celebrate a special occasion, add this to your Maui bucket list!

Watch the Surfers and Turtles at Ho’okipa Beach Park

Located on Maui’s North Shore, Ho’okipa Beach Park is one of the best surfing spots in Maui as it’s well-known for consistent and powerful waves. With ideal conditions for surfing, you’ll often see large numbers of windsurfers and kite surfers taking advantage of the large waves.

You can drive straight up to the Ho’okipa lookout for the perfect vantage point to watch the surfers from high up above the beach. This beach is so famous in the surfing world that there are several professional windsurfing competitions held there every year.

The other draw to Ho’okipa Beach is that it’s one of the best places in Maui to see turtles on the beach. The beach is a favourite hangout spot for Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles which can often be seen in groups basking in the sun out of the water.

There is even a viewing spot where you can stand on a platform and watch the sea turtles from a safe distance. It’s really important to avoid approaching or disturbing them in any way as there are fines in place for those who break the rules.

Planning a trip to Hawaii and wondering what to pack for Maui? This comprehensive Maui packing list will cover everything you need know while preparing for your upcoming Hawaiian holiday.

Let’s face it, no one loves packing. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably left packing until the very last minute on more than one occasion. The problem with last minute packing is that you’re pretty much always going to forget something important.

Who wants to waste their precious holiday time shopping for things you forgot to bring?! That’s cutting into beach time.

After spending a month on The Valley Isle this year, I’ve taken the guesswork out of what to pack for Maui and I’ve narrowed it down to the must-have essentials.

In addition to the obvious question of “what to wear in Maui?” I’ve included all the important items you might need for iconic Maui activities such as driving the Road to Hana or watching the sunset on Haleakala.

Read on to find my ultimate Maui packing list so that you can ensure your dream holiday goes off without a hitch and nothing gets left behind!

The Ultimate Maui Packing List - What to Pack for Maui, Hawaii

Enjoying a warm and sunny February day in Maui

Are you in the planning stage of booking your Maui vacation? You’ll want to read my five day Maui itinerary to ensure you don’t miss any of the island’s top highlights.

One last thing before we dive into this Maui packing guide. If you have a long flight to catch before arriving in Maui, be sure to check out my list of carry on essentials that will make the journey a whole lot smoother!

The Ultimate Maui Packing List for Every Season

The good thing about Hawaii is that the seasons don’t differ drastically. Maui’s tropical climate attracts visitors year-round thanks to its consistent warm temperatures and beautiful beach-friendly weather. This makes packing for Maui pretty straightforward.

The only thing that changes between seasons is the amount of rain the island receives from winter to summer. If you are planning your trip during the winter months of October – April, you’re pretty much guaranteed to see rain at some point during your trip. That means you’ll need to pack accordingly!

Upper Waikani Falls, Road to Hana

Chasing waterfalls on the Road to Hana, a must-do activity for your Maui bucket list!

Packing for Maui: Important Travel Documents

Passport/ID – For those travelling internationally, it may seem obvious but your passport really should be the first thing you pack into your carry on bag. If you’re travelling to Maui from the mainland USA, be sure to bring a valid government ID card like your driver’s license.

Having a passport holder can help keep all of your travel documents organized in one place. I like this one because it can fit your passport, boarding pass, credit cards, ID cards, some cash and other important things that you can’t travel without.

ESTA (visa waiver) – Are you travelling to the USA from a different country? You may need to apply for an ESTA (visa waiver) before you go. This costs $21 USD and is very easy to do online. It goes without saying that you’ll want to have this organized before the trip begins.

Find out whether you need an ESTA or a visa before travelling to the USA by visiting the government website. Applying online can also be done from the same link.

Flight Tickets – Don’t forget to check in for your flight online (24 – 48 hours before departure) and download your boarding pass on your phone before heading to the airport. I always use this website to find cheap flights.

Travel Insurance – If you’re travelling to Hawaii from overseas, you’ll need to get travel insurance. Travelling to any country without insurance is not worth the risk. The reality of travelling overseas is that unexpected things can happen at any time.

The last thing you want is to have a medical emergency occur while you’re in a different country with no insurance to cover the costs! Even if you don’t end up using it, it is absolutely worth having travel insurance for the peace of mind.

I always go with Heymondo. They’re one of the most reputable travel insurance companies that will provide you with simple and flexible coverage. Whether you are into adventurous activities or simply looking for trip cancellation and medical insurance, Heymondo has you covered.

As a reader of The Road Is Life, you get 5% off your Heymondo travel insurance simply by using this link!

The Ultimate Maui Packing GuidePacking for Maui: Electronics

Phone & ChargerMost people use their phones daily, especially for taking photos while on holiday. Before travelling to Maui I spent some time researching the best phone camera on the market and ended up investing in the Google Pixel 7 Pro (it was time for an upgrade anyway).

I can’t say enough good things about the camera on this phone. If you’re due for a phone upgrade and seeking a phone with amazing camera capabilities (that isn’t an iPhone), I can highly recommend going with the Google Pixel 7 Pro.

This phone is not cheap but I promise you won’t be disappointed! See the sunset photo below for reference.

International Power Adapter – If you’re travelling to the USA from outside of North America, you’ll need to bring a power adapter. I like this universal travel adapter that can be used in every country so that you’ll never be stuck without the correct one.

I specifically like the fact that it has USB ports on the side so that you can easily charge your phone, tablet or smart watch at the same time as your laptop.

Portable Charger – This is such a great item to have while you’re out and about sightseeing or spending the day at the beach. Ensure your phone and other electronics stay charged throughout the day by throwing one of these handy devices in your day pack.

Camera & Accessories – If you’re into photography and going to be bringing a camera, be sure to include all the accessories in your camera bag! Your camera charger, a second battery and a few extra SD cards are some important things to bring.

Having a tripod is also a necessary item for photography enthusiasts, especially for capturing those epic Maui sunsets that you’ll see every night! Check out my top photography locations in Maui to get some inspiration before you go.

The Ultimate Five Day Maui Itinerary

Can you believe this photo was taken on my phone?!

Noise Cancelling Headphones – If you’re someone who travels often, these are truly a game changer to have during flights. After investing in a pair of these noise cancelling headphones, they’ve quickly become my one of my favourite carry on essentials no matter how long the flight!

Laptop – Whether you work on your laptop or simply enjoy watching Netflix in the evenings, don’t forget to pack this item in your carry on bag. Having a laptop or tablet is also great for watching your favourite show during the flight over.

I love my Dell Inspiron which is very compact and lightweight to bring travelling. I’ve been using this laptop daily for 2 years now and can only say positive things about it. The battery life is also great which makes it perfect for working online or watching movies on long flights.

Kindle – If you’re someone who loves to read a book at the beach or by the pool, having a Kindle is a must-have for any traveler. Instead of weighing your luggage down with bulky books, a Kindle takes up very little space in your bag while allowing you to bring as many books as you like.

*Tip* If you haven’t already got one, go for the waterproof Kindle which allows you to read by the beach or the pool without worrying about water damage.

GoPro If your budget allows for it, it’s definitely worthwhile to include a GoPro or any kind of underwater camera on your Maui packing list. This is something you’ll really want to have while snorkeling through the beautiful coral gardens and swimming alongside sea turtles.

GoPros are small and easy to take along with you on any snorkeling or scuba diving adventure. The underwater world of Maui is just as beautiful as the surface and being able to capture those special memories and keep them forever is priceless!

What to Pack for Maui - GoPro

Swimming with sea turtles in Maui is an incredible experience!

What to Pack for Maui: Toiletries & Medications

Prescription Medications – Don’t forget to bring any of your daily prescriptions pills or medications.

Dramamine If you’re easily affected by motion sickness when driving on winding roads or rough waves on a boat tour, this is an essential thing to always have on hand in your day pack.

You’ll see what I mean when you drive the Road to Hana or make your way up the twisting highway to the summit of Haleakala!

Reef Safe SunscreenThe state of Hawaii has made it mandatory to only use reef-safe or mineral sunscreen when entering the ocean. This is in order to protect marine life and conserve the coral reefs.

Regular sunscreen contains harmful chemicals that are very damaging to the fish and beautiful corals. If you forget to pack reef-safe sunscreen, you can find it stocked in many shops around the island including Costco, Walmart or Target.

SPF Lip BalmDon’t forget that your lips also need sun protection, this reef-safe lip balm makes a great choice.

Aloe Vera Gel – If you’re planning a winter escape to Maui, chances are it’s been a while since your skin has seen the sun. It’s always good to have a bottle of aloe vera on hand just in case your skin turns a little red.

Insect Repellent – The mosquitos in Maui are really big and can be a huge nuisance, especially on the east side of the island where it rains a lot. Avoid getting any bug bites when you’re hiking in the jungle or exploring waterfalls by bringing a good quality insect repellent.

What to Pack for Maui, Hawaii

Soaking up the sun at Keawakapu Beach

Hand Sanitizer – I’m one of those people that never leaves home without a small bottle of hand sanitizer, especially during flights!

Deodorant – Bring a travel-sized deodorant so you can easily take it in your carry on and throw it in your beach bag for on the go.

HairbrushWith all that time spent in the pool and the ocean, you won’t regret bringing a detangling brush with you to keep your hair free of knots and frizz.

Makeup Remover WipesI never travel without facial wipes which are great for removing sunscreen after the beach or refreshing yourself on long flights.

Curling Iron/Flat Iron If these are items you can’t live without, don’t forget to pack them!

Shower Gel/Soap Your hotel will likely provide this but it’s nice to have your favourite soap while on holiday.

Toiletry BagKeep all your toiletries together in one place by using a toiletry bag that folds up small and fits in your luggage. I’ve been using this one for the last few years and it’s always done the job well.

This particular design is great because it’s super compact and has multiple compartments to fit your makeup, toothpaste, shampoos and any other bathroom items.

More toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, makeup, shampoo & conditioner, facial cleanser, moisturizer.

Baby Beach, Maui

The stunning Baby Beach in Lahaina

What to Wear in Maui: Clothes & Shoes

Swimsuits – If your Maui itinerary is anything like mine then you’ll be spending a lot of time at the beach or in the water. From swimming with sea turtles to cooling off in waterfalls on the Road to Hana, the water activities in Maui are truly endless.

I would advise to pack several swimsuits (2-4 is a good amount) so that you always have one ready to go for a day of fun adventures.

Running Shoes/Comfortable Walking Shoes – I always take my Nike running shoes when travelling and use them for all purposes, even hiking. They are very useful to have when walking long distances such as sightseeing, airports, light hiking trails etc.

Flip Flops/Sandals – Having a comfy pair of slip on shoes is ideal for hitting the beach and exploring the island. While flip flops are perfect for beach days, I really love my Birkenstock sandals as an all-around sandal that can be worn anywhere.

They’re super comfortable to walk in while also being practical and easy to slip on and off. I also love how versatile they are. You can dress them up or use them as everyday sandals and they’re perfect in both scenarios.

If you’ve never owned a pair of Birkenstocks, do yourself a favour and give them a try!

Rain Jacket – The weather in Maui can vary from one side of the island to another. This is particularly true on the island’s east coast where rain occurs often.

You might wake up in your hotel in Kihei to blue skies and sunshine, only to pass through several rain showers while driving the Road to Hana. It’s always best to bring a rain jacket with you, even if you don’t end up using it.

Warm Jacket – A warm jacket is probably the last thing you thought you needed for Maui. If you’re planning to watch the sunrise or sunset on Haleakala, you’ll definitely need it.

Haleakala’s summit sits at an elevation of 10,023 ft high which means the weather is always different from the rest of the island. The temperatures at the top of the volcano are usually much cooler, especially during sunrise or sunset hours.

*Tip* Avoid filling up your suitcase with a bulky winter coat and opt for a packable puffer jacket that folds up nice and small, like the one I’m wearing in the photo below.

Other Items To Pack – Socks, bras, underwear, pyjamas.

A beautiful Haleakala summit sunset

I was very glad to have my warm jacket during my sunset trip to Haleakala’s summit!

What to Wear in Maui for Women

SundressesYour Maui packing list is not complete without a few cute sundresses that also work as swimsuit cover ups. These are perfect for wearing to the beach, sightseeing, around the resort or out to dinner. They also complete any beachy Instagram shoots, just add a sunhat and you’re set!

Maxi Dress You may also want to throw in a long, flowy dress for sunset cocktails and evenings out. You can dress them up with a pair of nice sandals. Forget the heels and fancy clothes, Maui is pretty laidback for the most part.

Activewear Whether there’s a gym in your hotel or you like to get up early and run on the beach, I never travel without a set of active wear. This includes leggings, sports bras, a tank top and a pair of shorts.

Light Jacket – I like to bring a denim jacket to pair with sun dresses or wear during the evening if it’s a bit chilly.

ShortsA few pairs of comfy shorts are essential for everyday use.

T-shirts/Tank TopsI always pack tank tops but t-shirts are also a must for protecting your shoulders from the sun.

Sweatshirt/Hoodie It’s always good to have one of these when travelling, especially if the aircon is quite cool on the flight. This item will come in very handy as a layering piece during your trip to the summit of Haleakala.

As the temperature at the top can get pretty close to freezing, you’ll be grateful to have a warm layer under your jacket. I also wore my hoodie during the sunrise whale watching boat trip.

What to Wear in Maui for Men

T-shirts/Tank TopsA couple of casual t-shirts and tank tops that can be worn everyday are a necessity on every beach holiday.

Shorts You’ll be wearing shorts everyday so bring at least 2-3 pairs.

Short Sleeved Button Down ShirtsA few of these to wear to dinner in the evenings is the best way to polish your look without being too dressy.

Aloha ShirtYou can’t go to Hawaii without a classic, floral Aloha shirt. This will be perfect for wearing to a nice restaurant or a luau.

Sweatshirt/HoodieAs mentioned above, you’ll need to wear this as a layer when you watch the sunset on Haleakala or join an early morning whale watching boat tour.

Whale watching in Lahaina, Maui

What to Pack for the Beach in Maui: Beach Essentials

Beach BagHaving a cute beach bag that fits all your beach day essentials is a must in Maui!

Beach MatI always like to have a compact and lightweight beach mat that keeps the sand away and makes chilling on the beach more comfortable. This one folds up small so it fits in your beach bag and it also has anchors to keep the corners secured to the ground.

Sand Free Beach TowelNot only are these towels fast drying, they also keep the sand off. I’ve had mine for a few years now and take it with me on every trip. Try one of these microfiber beach towels and you’ll never go back.

Water ShoesIf you’re going snorkeling from a rocky shore or venturing to waterfalls on the Road to Hana, these will be a useful item to pack.

There are several waterfalls that require walking through a stream to access and unfortunately I didn’t have water shoes so I had to miss out!

Snorkel, Mask & FinsHaving your own snorkeling gear is the easiest and cheapest way to hop in for a snorkel from the beach. With so many amazing snorkeling spots in Maui, you’ll definitely want to bring your own set.

Renting snorkel gear is an option and prices cost around $30 per week. However I always prefer to have my own set which saves you the time and hassle of renting and returning them at the end.

Wetsuit Top/Rash GuardAvoid a nasty sunburn while you’re out snorkeling by wearing a wetsuit top. This will allow you to stay in the water longer without worrying about getting too cold or sun burnt.

Palauea Beach Sunset, Maui

Get ready for all the gorgeous Hawaiian beach sunsets! Palauea Beach

Packing for Adventures in Maui: Hiking & Outdoor Activities

Hiking BootsI did a fair amount of hiking while I was on Maui and to be honest, I didn’t have hiking boots with me. They’re pretty bulky and difficult to take travelling so I usually just wear my Nike trainers for all kinds of exercise/hiking.

If you’re planning to do any longer and more challenging hikes on the island, like the Pipiwai Trail, the Lahaina Pali trail or the Sliding Sands Trail on Haleakala, then I would highly recommend bringing some sturdy hiking boots along.

In addition to the ankle support they provide, a good pair of hiking boots makes it so much easier to walk on uneven ground and muddy trails.

Waterproof Phone CaseI ordered this waterproof phone case from Amazon and was so glad to have it on the whale watching tour and snorkeling day trip. This is especially good for the small-raft boat tour as you’ll be sitting low and will likely get splashed a few times by waves.

Phone Flotation StrapIn the unfortunate event that you drop your phone in the water, it definitely won’t float on the surface, even with a waterproof case.

Imagine you’re standing at the edge of the boat trying to snap that perfect photo of a whale breaching and your phone gets knocked out of your hand.

For peace of mind while near the water, attach one of these handy flotation straps to your phone.

Waterproof Dry BagIn addition to the waterproof phone case, it’s good to have one of these to pack other items in during boat trips, kayaking adventures, beach days or swimming at waterfalls.

Keep your wallet, camera and other important belongings dry at all times while you’re near the water!

Portable Cooler Bag This is ideal for packing a lunch, snacks and drinks when you’re out adventuring on day trips like driving the Road to Hana or watching the sunset on Haleakala.

Travel UmbrellaSmall, compact and something you’ll be very thankful to whip out as soon as an unexpected downpour hits (which happens more often than not in Maui!)

Maui Rainbow Instagram Spots

Hiking under a rainbow on the Lahaina Pali Trail

Useful Accessories to Pack for Maui

Day Pack/Carry On Bag Having a lightweight backpack that you can fit your essentials in for the day is a must while travelling. It’s not only great for taking your belongings on day trips but also perfect for packing your electronics and valuables as carry on items during flights.

TSA Approved Toiletry Bag A clear TSA approved bag is needed for carrying your travel-sized personal items on the flight. It’s ideal for things like hand-sanitizer, moisturizer, cosmetics etc.

Remember though, any of these liquid items must be under 100ml if you’re taking them through security.

Purse/HandbagA small travel purse is perfect to keep your essentials in for evenings out, who wants to bring their day pack to a nice restaurant?

UV SunglassesWhether you’re visiting Maui in the winter or summer, you’ll need a good pair of sunglasses to protect yourself from the harsh UV rays.

The Ultimate Maui Packing List Guide

Living the good life with a coconut at the beach

Sun HatAs mentioned above, the sun in Maui is strong no matter what time of year you go. Keep yourself protected while at the beach or exploring the island.

Collapsible Water BottleAvoid buying single-use plastic bottles everyday during your trip to Maui. Having a reusable water bottle is an essential item for travelling, hiking, spending the day at the beach or doing day trips around the island.

This collapsible water bottle will easily fit in your suitcase when travelling over as well as fold up nicely in your day pack when it’s empty.

Reusable Shopping Bag If you’re planning to shop at Costco, Walmart or any grocery store while you’re in Maui then be sure to bring a few reusable shopping bags with you. This one is perfect and takes up very little space in your suitcase.

Costco Membership CardIf you’re a Costco member, you won’t want to leave this behind! Eating at restaurants for every meal in Maui is going to add up very quickly. If you have a fridge in your accommodation, make a priority of stopping in at Costco.

Bringing your Costco card will allow you to stock up on affordable groceries as well as fill up your rental car with cheaper gas. Costco is located in Kahului, about 5 minutes around the corner from the airport. It’s the perfect place to buy a few essentials when you arrive on the island.

I saved a ton of money by doing all of my grocery shopping in Costco when I was in Maui. It’s also the cheapest place to buy gas on the island so you can get everything done in one stop.

What to Pack for Maui, Hawaii

How Much Time do You Need For Maui?

Maui is a pretty big island with a huge amount of activities and amazing sites to see in addition to hitting the beach. If you had two weeks to spend, you still wouldn’t be bored on Maui. However, not everyone has the luxury of time.

After spending a month on the island, I created the perfect five day Maui itinerary that will easily fit into your one week Maui holiday, taking into account that there may be a rainy day or two.

This itinerary covers all of the island’s main attractions making it easy to plan your epic Maui vacation. You’ll definitely want to read it before you go!

Renting a car in Maui is not cheap however it is the most efficient way to get around the island and access the most popular tourist sites such as the Road to Hana or Haleakala’s summit.

Public transportation is limited and the attractions are all pretty spread out. Having a car is the only option unless you plan to book individual day tours.

The best place to rent a car is on arrival at the Kahului Airport. Check out this website to browse car rental options and book your rental car online before you arrive.

Swimming with sea turtles or watching them lounge on the beach is a major highlight for visitors to Maui. It’s one of those bucket list activities that should be a priority on everyone’s Maui itinerary.

While Hawaiian green sea turtles (also known as Honu) are abundant in the waters around Maui, they tend to have their favourite spots to hang out. If you’re looking for the best places to see turtles in Maui, it helps to know where to look before you set out!

On my last visit to Maui, I was very grateful to have many turtle sightings both on the beach and in the sea. To make things easier for you, I rounded up the best places to see turtles on Maui in this easy to follow guide.

I’ve also included some important turtle viewing tips, a list of the must-have turtle swimming essentials and a map to help you locate the exact location of each sea turtle hang out.

So, come with me and let’s find the best turtle viewing spots around Maui!

Important Tip for Viewing Sea Turtles on Maui

*Do not approach the turtles* Before you set off in search of turtles, there are some things you should know.

Although the sea turtles in Maui appear calm and unbothered with humans being near them, it’s important that you never approach them at any time. There are hefty fines upward of $10,000 for those who don’t respect the rules in place to protect these endangered animals.

Hawaiian green sea turtles are protected by the Endangered Species Act which means it is illegal to touch, feed, or stand near them. Always be sure to keep around 10 feet away from any sea turtle that you come across, whether it be on land or in the ocean.

Do not approach sea turtles in MauiMust-Have Essentials for Snorkeling with Turtles on Maui

Go-Pro – Did you really snorkel with turtles if you don’t have the photos to prove it?! All jokes aside, it’s awesome to look back on the amazing memories from your time snorkeling with sea turtles in Maui!

Over the years Go-Pros have improved a lot and become more affordable. They are compact and easy to bring along with you on any snorkeling or scuba diving adventure.

Reef-safe sunscreenAn essential item that is now required in Maui in order to preserve the coral reefs and marine life. Regular sunscreen contains toxic chemicals which harm marine life and damage corals.

As of October 2022, the use of regular sunscreen has been banned on the entire island of Maui. If you forget to bring a tube of mineral sunscreen with you, you can buy it on the island.

Mask & SnorkelWhen you book a snorkeling tour, this will be provided by the tour operator. If you’re planning to do a lot of snorkeling from the beach, then it’s better to bring your own set. It’s also possible to rent a mask and snorkel from many rental shops around the island.

Fins – This goes hand in hand with bringing a mask and snorkel, you can also rent fins on the island. Check out Maui Ocean Rentals to book your snorkel gear online before you get there. It will cost you $30 to rent a complete set of snorkel equipment for one week.

Wetsuit TopKeep yourself protected from the sun while you’re snorkeling with a wetsuit top. Sunscreen wears off over time, the best way to keep your back fully shielded is by wearing one of these while snorkeling.

A wetsuit top also helps if you’re someone who gets cold while swimming in the ocean for extended periods. Wearing one of these allows you to stay in the water longer without worrying about getting sun burnt.

Swimming with sea turtles in Maui

Swimming with sea turtles is an incredible experience!

Best Time to See Turtles in Maui

First thing in the morning when the tide is calm and the wind hasn’t picked up yet is the best time of day for any kind of water activities in Maui. This also goes for snorkeling with sea turtles.

Turtles can be seen pretty much any time of day but if you plan your snorkel trip early, you’re also less likely to encounter crowds of other tourists doing the same thing.

Where to See Turtles in Maui – On the Beach

Ho’okipa Beach Park

This is perhaps the most popular place to see turtles on land in Maui! With turtle sightings practically guaranteed, tourists flock to Ho’okipa Beach to watch them sunning themselves on the sand. The best time of day to see them gathered on the beach is in the afternoon.

Ho’okipa Beach Park is located on Maui’s North Shore, a few minutes past the town of Paia. Aside from the sea turtles, it’s a famous surfing beach thanks to the huge waves. You can sit and watch the surfers from the lookout above the beach.

The combination of large waves and sharp rocks near the shore results in some less than ideal swimming conditions. If you’re looking for a nice swimming spot nearby, try Baby Beach or Secret Beach which are located in Paia.

This location has become such a popular place to see turtles on Maui that there is usually a conservation officer patrolling the area daily. This is to make sure people are following the rules and not getting too close to the turtles resting on the beach.

Tip – You can easily include this beach as a stop on your Road to Hana driving itinerary.

Sea turtles at Ho'okipa Beach

A beach full of turtles – Ho’okipa Beach

Kuau Beach Park

Just down the road from Ho’okipa Beach, you can often find turtles basking in the sun on this quiet beach. Kuau Beach Park is also referred to as Kaulahao Beach and has more of a laid back vibe than the more popular Ho’okipa Beach.

It tends to attract more of a local crowd and is less busy than Ho’okipa. You can also hop in for a snorkel here for a high chance of swimming alongside sea turtles.

The best places to see turtles in MauiBaby Beach – Paia

Baby Beach is a quiet, protected lagoon located just south of Paia town on Maui’s North Shore. Turtles can often be spotted swimming around in the shallow waters here or resting on the sand.

This beach is typically less busy with tourists and a great spot for swimming and lounging in the soft sand. With a coral reef that creates a natural swimming pool, it’s a nice spot to snorkel and swim with children.

While seeing turtles here is very common, it’s not always guaranteed. If you’re looking for a scenic beach to relax on for the day with a high chance of seeing turtles then head over to Baby Beach in Paia!

Makena Landing

Located a short drive south of Wailea, Makena Landing is another beach where you’re almost certain to find turtles relaxing on the rocks near the shore. I went to this spot one morning and saw five turtles just chilling right there on the beach.

After watching them for a bit, we decided to go for a snorkel to see what else we could find. It turns out it’s also a great place to swim with turtles as we saw several in the water very close to the shore!

There’s loads of fish to be seen here too which makes it an awesome snorkeling spot overall. This is also a nice place to rent a kayak and cruise around for a few hours taking in the stunning scenery.

Turtle Lagoon – Maui Ocean Center

Visiting an aquarium obviously doesn’t count when it comes to seeing turtles in the wild. I had to include this place though because it is an iconic Maui attraction and deserves a place on your Maui itinerary.

If you get stuck with a rainy day on the island, a visit to Maui Ocean Center is the perfect activity. You can easily spend a few hours here strolling through the interactive displays and coming face to face with Hawaiian sea animals.

It’s a fun way to learn more about the marine life that you will see while snorkeling on the island.

This aquarium is home to sharks, stingrays, octopuses, loads of fish and of course sea turtles! The Turtle Lagoon at Maui Ocean Center gives you a chance to watch Hawaiian green sea turtles from above the water and below.

While the prices may seem a little high at first glance, I can highly recommend this place based on my own great experience there. One of the highlights is walking through the glass tunnel where you’ll see sharks and stingrays swimming above your head.

At the end of your visit, you’ll get to watch a 3D humpback whale show which is a very unique and cool experience.

Opening Hours: 9am – 5pm daily

Tickets: $44/adult, $30/child

Where to See Turtles in Maui – In the Ocean

Maluaka Beach – Turtle Town

When you hear about the best spots to swim with turtles in Maui, Turtle Town is often the first place mentioned. I mean, the name says it all! At the south end of Maluaka Beach, underwater volcanic formations attract an abundance of Hawaiian green sea turtles.

The best place to locate them here is by entering the ocean from the south end of Maluaka Beach. This is where you’ll find the coral reef and have the best chance of snorkeling with turtles.

In your search for sea turtles, keep a watch out for the other marine life that can be seen at Turtle Town such as octopus, eels, and plenty of tropical Hawaiian fish.

Locating this spot can be a little tricky as there is no actual signage for Turtle Town or Maluaka Beach for that matter. You can find this beach just south of Makena Landing with a parking lot in the south end for easy access to Turtle Town. Click here to view the location on Google Maps.

With incredible snorkeling conditions and great facilities (restrooms and showers near the parking lot), Maluaka Beach is easily one of the best snorkeling spot on Maui!

→Book a half-day snorkel tour to Turtle Town and Molokini Crater

Spot sea turtles at Turtle Town in MauiUlua Beach

If you’re seeking a great snorkel spot near Kihei or Wailea, you can’t go wrong with Ulua Beach. This palm-lined cove provides an idyllic setting to spend a laidback day of snorkeling and relaxing.

For the best chance of seeing turtles, aim to explore around the rocky outcrop at the north end of the beach. This section of land that separates Ulua Beach from the neighbouring Mokapu Beach is home to a thriving reef system.

You’ll be sure to see lots of fish and sea turtles bobbing around in the water not far from the shore. This is an ideal spot for beginner snorkelers and children.

Ulua Beach has a parking lot, restrooms and showers available which makes it an excellent place to spend the day snorkeling with turtles on Maui.

Best places to swim with turtles on MauiBlack Rock Ka’anapali

At the north end of Ka’anapali Beach, this large volcanic outcrop is a hot spot for turtle sightings. Since it’s so close to the busy tourist areas of Lahaina and Ka’anapali, this location is usually quite crowded with other people.

Surprisingly though, this doesn’t deter the turtles from gathering here. This awesome snorkeling spot is always going to be busy so if you hope to avoid crowds, get there first thing in the morning. If you arrive later in the day, it’s likely that you’ll see more people than sea turtles!

For the best chance to see turtles, stick to the corals near the rocky outcrop. You’ll also see a huge variety of fish in this spot such as Hawaii’s state fish, Humuhumunukunukuapua’a among many other colourful species.

If you’re into cliff jumping, Black Rock also happens to be a great place for that as you’ll notice many people jumping in from the cliffs.

Best places to snorkel with turtles on MauiHonolua Bay

On the north west corner of Maui lies one of the island’s top bays for snorkeling. The clear turquoise water of Honolua Bay is teeming with marine life and beautiful coral gardens.

Thanks to the Marine Conservation law which makes fishing illegal in this area, you will be able to see many types of tropical fish and turtles. Honolua Bay is fairly large and requires a bit of swimming to make it to the prime snorkel spots.

You will find the best corals and sea turtles along the right side of the bay (if you’re standing on the beach looking toward the ocean). Look out for boat tours that are often parked near the best snorkeling spots to get an idea of where you should go.

The calm and clear water in this bay result in great snorkeling conditions however there can sometimes be a current with large waves present. Always check the conditions before venturing out. If you see surfers in the bay, it’s a good indicator that it’s not a good time for snorkeling.

To access Honolua Bay you’ll need to park on the road near the Honolua Bay access trail and walk for 5 minutes to reach the beach. If you arrive later in the day, it may be more challenging to find a parking space with limited roadside parking available.

With limited facilities here (no restrooms, showers or a proper parking lot), booking a day trip to Honolua Bay is a popular choice.

A snorkeling boat trip to Honolua Bay makes a great day trip from Lahaina. There are several catamaran tours that take you there from Lahaina Harbor, see a highly-reviewed tour option at the link below.

→Book a half-day snorkel tour to Honolua Bay from Lahaina Harbor

Honolua Bay, Maui's top snorkeling spots

Kapalua Bay

Another beautiful beach on Maui’s west coast which is known for great snorkeling conditions. With a vibrant coral reef, you’ll be sure to see plenty of exotic fish and of course, Hawaiian green sea turtles.

With soft sand, clear water and stunning scenery, this is the perfect place to spend a lazy day at the beach while hopping in for a few snorkel sessions.

The nice thing about this snorkeling spot is that you don’t have to go far to find sea turtles. Just a few steps from the shore and you’ll soon be surrounded by sea life and pretty corals.

Kapalua Bay is easily accessible with restrooms, showers and a parking lot. It’s a very popular beach so you’ll have to arrive early to get a parking space. The beach is not very big and fills up quickly, the earlier you get there the better!

Where to Stay on Maui

Finding your perfect Maui accommodation may be the most important factor of the entire trip. This all comes down to two things: your budget and how you want to spend your time on the island.

Do you want to relax in the comfort of a luxury resort with a nice pool and restaurant on-site? Would you prefer to have an apartment with a full kitchen so you can prepare meals yourself? Or are you seeking a family friendly resort in Maui?

With a huge range of accommodation choices, all of these options are possible on Maui!

South Maui

South Maui has the best weather on the island which makes it awesome for soaking up the sun on the beach.

The only downside is that it’s far away from major Maui attractions like Haleakala, the Road to Hana or Maui Upcountry. This makes for a long drive every time you want to go out for the day.

Wailea – If you want the full resort experience with beautiful swimming pools, golf courses with a view and all the amenities, look no further than Wailea. This part of South Maui is home to a collection of gorgeous 5-star resorts right on the beach.

Four Seasons Resort - Maui

Postcard-worthy views at the Four Seasons Maui

Kihei – For those seeking a laidback option near the beach, Kihei offers many condo rentals and affordable hotels. This is ideal if you’re going to be spending the majority of your time at the beach or taking day trips around the island.

There are plenty of supermarkets, shops and restaurants in Kihei which are easily accessible by foot from your hotel/condo. It’s only a 20 minute drive to Costco, Walmart, Whole Foods and other big name stores.

➡Browse more hotels or apartments in Kihei⬅

West Maui

West Maui is a popular and bustling location to base yourself on the island. With fabulous beaches, great shopping opportunities and loads of beachfront restaurants, you can’t go wrong by choosing to stay in Lahaina or Kaanapali.

The downside to West Maui is that it can get quite busy, especially during high season. If you’re not a fan of crowds filling up the streets, then you’d be better suited in Kihei or Wailea.

Lahaina & Kaanapali – The historic whaling village of Lahaina has a lively atmosphere with busy streets, popular restaurants and easy access to whale watching and snorkeling boat trips.

The resort community of Kaanapali is a 10 minute drive up the road from Lahaina and offers a wide variety of great accommodation choices.  Ranging from budget friendly motels to fancy beachfront resorts, you’re guaranteed to find what you’re looking for in West Maui.

➡Browse more accommodation options in West Maui⬅

Swimming Pool, Maui, Resort, WaileaUpcountry

Staying in this part of the island is a less popular option but it puts you closer to Haleakala and the Road to Hana, significantly cutting down your driving time to both attractions.

You may choose to stay in this area for a night or two to make sightseeing on this part of the island more convenient. For those looking to get off the beaten path in Maui, you’ll find some unique accommodation choices.

Paia & Kula – Set along the slopes of Haleakala, you’ll get a spectacular view over west and south Maui from Kula. Staying in the small town of Paia will allow easy access to the less touristy north shore beaches and give you a head start to driving the Road to Hana.

East Maui

East Maui receives a lot more rain than other parts the island. Aside from exploring the Road to Hana, there really isn’t much more to do here. It’s also a very long drive to get anywhere else on the island which means most people choose to stay in East Maui for only a few nights.

Hana – Break up your drive on the Road to Hana by spending one night at a hotel/apartment in Hana.

Where to Rent a Car on Maui

If you’re planning to follow this Maui itinerary pretty closely, renting a car is the only option (unless you plan to book individual tours/day trips). Maui is a big island and the main attractions are quite spread out.

Want to drive the Road to Hana or watch the sunset on Haleakala? These are two essential Maui activities where public transportation isn’t an option. Trust me, you’ll have way more freedom and convenience by having a car during your 5 days in Maui.

When it comes to renting a car on Maui, the best place to do so is on arrival at the Kahului Airport. Check out this website to browse car rental options and book your rental car online before you arrive.

**Tip** If you’re renting a car, the cheapest places to buy gas on Maui is at Costco or Safeway. Save yourself some money by fuelling up at either gas station before driving the Road to Hana or making your way to the summit of Haleakala.

Maui Rainbow - Five Days in Maui

Best Time of Year to Visit Maui

While Maui is a great holiday destination with warm temperatures year-round, you may want to plan your trip according to the following seasons.

October – April (Winter): If you’re looking to escape the freezing cold winter on the mainland (like most people) then this is a great time to visit Maui. The island sees more rain during this time of year however the weather changes quickly and rain showers usually don’t last longer than an hour.

There is a chance that you might get unlucky with storms lasting several days to a whole week. This is unfortunately down to luck and there is no way to predict what the weather will be like when you visit Maui during the winter months.

Since Maui has a tropical climate, the temperatures during winter hover between 20 – 30°C (mid 70’s – low 80’s °F). When I spent a month on Maui from the end of January to the end of February, it rained a fair amount but I also had plenty of warm and sunny beach days.

May – September (Summer): The summer months are also a great time of year to visit Maui with less rain, warm temperatures and ideal sightseeing weather. This time of year coincides with summer vacation making it a popular time for family holidays when the kids are off school.

April/May or September/October (Low Season): For lower accommodation prices and less crowds “low season” or spring/fall is the perfect time to plan your 5 days on Maui if you’re on a budget.

December – April (Whale watching season): This is the best time to spot humpback whales as they migrate down from Alaska to the warm waters of Hawaii to breed. Book a whale watching tour anytime during these months to see them breaching and playing at the ocean’s surface.

What to Pack for 5 Days on Maui

Here is a general packing list for some of the important must-haves when visiting Maui. If you forget to pack something, don’t worry. Maui has all the usual shops like Walmart, Costco, Target etc. so you’ll be able to find everything you need on the island.

For a more detailed list you can find my complete Maui packing guide here.

Day pack – When taking day trips or doing any hikes, you’ll need a good backpack to fit your essentials in.

Reef safe sunscreen – This is something you’ll need for any ocean related activities (swimming, snorkeling, surfing etc). The chemicals from regular sunscreen wash off your skin in the water which can harm marine life. As of October 1, 2022, the County of Maui has banned the use of non-mineral sunscreen in order to protect the coral reefs and the sea animals who inhabit them.

Aloe Vera Gel – If your skin hasn’t seen the sun for a while you may be prone to getting sun burnt, always have some aloe on hand just in case!

Waterproof phone caseI ordered this waterproof phone case from Amazon and was so glad to have it on the whale watching tour and snorkeling day trip. This is especially good for the small-raft boat tour as you’ll be sitting low and will likely get splashed a few times by waves.

Fast drying beach towelMost hotels will give you beach towels but I love my microfibre towel which dries super quickly and keeps the sand off easily. It is compact (easy to fit in your luggage) and perfect for day trips, think waterfall hopping on the Road to Hana or snorkeling boat tours.

Rain jacket – Rain is unpredictable on Maui and sometimes the weather is completely different from one side of the island to the other! It may be sunny when you depart from Kihei in the morning only to find storms and rain in Hana by the afternoon. Always come prepared with a rain jacket in your day pack.

Warm jacket Bringing a warm jacket to Hawaii may seem strange until you’re standing at the top of Haleakala volcano and it’s freezing cold! Trust me, it is 100% necessary if you’re planning to watch the sunrise or sunset up there. Due to the high altitude, the temperature is always significantly lower than the rest of the island.

Haleakala Crater before sunset

A warm jacket came in very handy during my sunset trip to the summit of Haleakala

Flip flops  You’ll be living in these on your trip to Maui so be sure to bring your comfiest pair. Or just buy some new ones when you get there!

Hiking bootsIf you’re thinking of doing any hiking on Maui, whether it be on Haleakala or the Road to Hana, don’t forget to bring a pair of sturdy hiking boots.

Collapsible water bottleA must-have for day trips or hiking excursions.

Sunglasses Pack a pair of polarized sunglasses to keep your eyes protected from the harsh UV rays.

Sun hat – Protect your head from the sun while looking cute at the same time with one of these foldable sun hats.

Beach bag Your 5 day Maui itinerary is likely to include plenty of beach time, don’t forget to bring a beach bag.

Camera – You’ll need a good camera (or phone camera) to capture all of the magical moments and memories that your 5 days on Maui will bring!

Portable phone charger – Always keep one of these handy in your bag when you’re on the go.

Mask & snorkel – If you book a snorkeling tour, this will be provided. If you’re planning to spend a lot of time snorkeling from the beach, having your own set is a must.

Motion sickness tablets – For those who are easily affected by rough waves on boat excursions or winding roads (Road to Hana/Haleakala Highway), you’ll need to have this on hand.

The Ultimate Five Day Maui Itinerary

Nothing beats a Maui beach sunset!

Five Day Maui Itinerary

Day One – Molokini Snorkeling & Turtle Town Boat Trip

Every Maui itinerary must include some snorkeling time as this is easily the most popular activity on the island. Maui is known for incredible snorkeling conditions and you don’t have to go far to find great spots.

There are many locations around the island where you can hop in the water off the beach to be surrounded by colourful fish and sea turtles.

One of the very best and most popular snorkeling spots in Maui is located off the south coast of the island. Molokini is a crescent shaped volcanic crater brimming with unique marine life and stunning coral formations.

Molokini Crater is known world-wide for its pristine visibility and outstanding snorkeling conditions.

Since it’s not possible to reach Molokini Crater independently (unless you own a private boat), you’ll have to book yourself onto a snorkeling day trip. Luckily there are many tours to choose from, most of them include snorkeling equipment, breakfast, lunch and drinks throughout the day.

In addition to snorkeling at Molokini Crater, the tours usually make a stop at Turtle Town. This is a series of underwater volcanic formations where you’ll find an abundance of Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles. See below for my top snorkeling tour recommendation.

Half-Day Molokini Crater and Turtle Town Snorkeling Boat Trip

Meeting Point: Maalaea Harbor

Included: Mask & snorkel, breakfast, lunch, drinks, catamaran trip to Molokini and Turtle Town, experienced tour guide.

This popular Molokini boat tour departs in the morning from Maalaea Harbor and takes you to the best snorkeling spot at the famous crater via catamaran.

Afterwards, you’ll head over to Turtle Town for the unforgettable experience of swimming with sea turtles! Throughout the day, you’ll be given breakfast, lunch and drinks (including alcoholic if desired) on board the boat.

Whether you are a beginner or seasoned snorkeler, this tour is suitable for all levels. If this is your first time and you’re a little nervous, no worries, your guide will provide instructions and ensure you’re comfortable at all times.

If you book this tour during whale migration season, there is a good chance you’ll catch a glimpse of humpback whales which is an awesome bonus!

Day Two – Beach Day + Sunset on Haleakala

Spend the Morning at the Beach

Plan to spend a relaxed morning at the beach before making the journey to the summit of Haleakala to watch the sunset. Maui has no shortage of stunning beaches and it’s likely that you’ll have a gorgeous beach within walking distance from your hotel.

Depending on what you want out of your beach day, there’s a beach to suit everyone on Maui. See below for some of the island’s best beaches and what makes them so great. So grab your beach bag, a mask and snorkel and enjoy what Maui is known best for!

Kama’ole Beaches – If you’re staying in Kihei, the three Kamaole Beaches are conveniently located in front of a collection of hotels and condos. These beaches are beautiful and perfect for relaxing and swimming. If you want to snorkel, stick to the rocky outcrops for the best conditions.

Wailea Beach – This pristine stretch of powdery golden sand makes a great place to spend a relaxed few hours of swimming and enjoying the scenery. It’s a popular beach for families and those staying within the Wailea resort area.

Keawakapu Beach – You’ll find this lovely beach located right in between Kihei and Wailea. With golden sands, a pretty row of palm trees and a green space to sit on (for those who don’t want to be on the sand), this family friendly beach is an idyllic spot to spend a morning.

I really liked this beach and found myself returning here several times during my stay on Maui.

Keawakapu Beach, 5 Days in Maui Itinerary

Enjoying a beach day at Keawakapu Beach

Palauea Beach – A small and un-crowded beach just south of Wailea. This quiet beach is very picturesque with white sand, turquoise water and a great view of the West Maui mountains in the background.

Maluaka Beach – If you’re looking to get your snorkel on, head over to this gem which is located in Makena, just south of Wailea. This beach is known as a great snorkeling spot with a high chance of swimming with sea turtles!

Kaanapali Beach – If you’re staying in Lahaina or Kaanapali, you’ll have easy access to the gorgeous Kaanapali Beach which has been referred to as one of America’s best beaches. Aside from being another beautiful Maui beach, there are many activities on offer such as swimming, snorkeling, cliff jumping, paddle boarding, parasailing and even golfing at the nearby golf course.

Baby Beach, Lahaina – This calm, sheltered lagoon with crystal clear water is the perfect beach for families. With a reef protecting the shore from large waves, Baby Beach is ideal for young children and those who are learning to snorkel for the first time.

Watch the Sunset on Haleakala

Watching the sun rise or set from the summit of Haleakala volcano is pretty high on most people’s Maui bucket list. And rightfully so, it’s one of the most magical and unique experiences that the island has to offer.

On my last trip to Maui, I opted to go for the sunset and it did not disappoint. There are several reasons why I would recommend watching the sunset on Haleakala instead of the sunrise.

Watching the sunrise has become so popular over the years that you are now required to reserve a permit in advance. When it’s busy, these permits are often sold out, making it hard to find the desired date that fits perfectly into your five day Maui itinerary.

You do not have to book a reservation to watch the sunset. This makes it easy to plan your trip to the summit according to the weather.

With many sunrise tours available, you’ll be sharing the sunrise with plenty of other people and tour groups. The sunset is just as beautiful and more peaceful with fewer crowds.

Watching the sunrise also requires waking up in the early hours of the morning (around 3am). This is less than ideal when you’re on holiday. Instead, you can sleep in and hit the beach before making your way to the volcano’s summit for sunset.

With no reservation required, less crowds and no early wakeup call, it goes without saying that watching the sunset is a great choice.

Tips for Watching a Haleakala Sunset

Bring warm clothes – Be sure to pack warm clothing (lots of layers and a warm jacket). The summit of Haleakala sits at an elevation of 10,023 ft which means that it is always much cooler than the rest of the island.

At this altitude, the weather varies and changes quickly. It might be sunny one minute followed by thick clouds and rain the next. The summit is pretty much always cold and windy, especially during sunrise and sunset hours.

Pack some snacks – There are no shops selling food in Haleakala National Park so if you want some snacks or drinks to accompany the sunset, be sure to throw some in your bag before you go.

Get there early – The landscapes and views at the summit of Haleakala are quite dramatic; where else can you walk above the clouds and descend into a volcano’s crater?! Be sure to time your visit to the summit an hour or two before the sun actually sets.

This will allow you to explore the area, check out the visitor center and take a short walk into the crater before settling in. It’s also a good idea to arrive early so you can secure a parking spot before they fill up right before sunset.

Check the sunset time – As the sunset time changes throughout the year, visit the national park website to check the current sunset time before you venture out.

Gas – Fill up your car before beginning the long drive to the volcano’s summit as there are no gas stations in the national park. The cheapest place to buy gas on Maui is at Costco or Safeway and the last stop for gas before entering the park is in Pukalani.

Park entry fee – Although you don’t need to make a reservation for sunset, you are still required to pay the $30 fee to enter the national park by car ($25 per motorcycle and $15 per pedestrian). You can either do this online before you go or at the park’s entrance gate by credit card only.

Day Three – Whale Watching + Lahaina + Beach Time + Sunset Luau

Day three of your Maui itinerary will have you exploring the west part of the island. Plan to spend an entire action-packed day in this area ticking off several major Maui highlights.

Begin your morning with a whale watching boat cruise followed by some casual sightseeing around Lahaina. Stop for lunch in town and then hit the beach for a few laidback hours of sand and sun.

Finish off the day with a memorable feast and festivities at a traditional Hawaiian luau!

Whale Watching Boat Trip

Whale watching is one of those absolute must-do activities when visiting Maui. Getting up close to humpback whales is an incredible experience that should be a priority on everyone’s Maui itinerary.

Every year from December to April, thousands of humpback whales migrate to the tropical waters of Hawaii from Alaska in order to breed. This is when you can see them breaching and frolicking in the ocean, just off of Maui’s coast.

When you book a whale watching tour during this time of year, you’re pretty much guaranteed to spot at least a few whales. If for some reason you don’t, the tour operators will usually offer you another tour at no additional cost.

Whale watching in Lahaina, Maui

We got very lucky with many whale sightings on the small raft tour!

I really enjoyed the small-group raft tour which allows you to see the whales at eye-level, giving you the ultimate whale watching experience. The tour guides were very knowledgeable, explaining every detail about the whale’s breeding behaviour and migration journey.

The real bonus was seeing tons of humpback whales playing, breaching and tail slapping! I did the tour in February and we saw so many whales, we actually lost count.

Planning your trip to Maui outside of whale watching season? Booking a dolphin cruise is a great alternative! Unlike the humpback whales, dolphins can be seen year round in Hawaii.

Check out this popular dolphin watching cruise that leaves from Lahaina Harbor and takes you to the nearby island of Lanai. The tour also includes snorkeling time, breakfast and a grilled BBQ lunch.

2-Hour Whale Watching Eco Raft Tour – Departing from the Lahaina Harbor, this small group eco-raft tour provides a more intimate whale watching experience that you won’t get on larger boats. With several time slots available throughout the day, you can choose a time that suits you best.

I would highly recommend booking a morning tour so that you can spend the rest of the day sightseeing in Lahaina and chilling on the beach. This whale watching tour was one of the main highlights of my last trip to Maui and I really can’t recommend it enough!

Lahaina Town

After your morning whale watching adventure you’ll be conveniently dropped off back at the Lahaina Harbor. From here, you can enjoy some time exploring the historic whaling village and checking out a few of the highlights.

Full of history and character, the charming town of Lahaina is a tourist hotspot full of great restaurants, shops, art galleries and heritage buildings.

One of the top attractions is the famous Banyan Tree which can be found taking up an entire city block in Lahaina! This ancient tree is the oldest living banyan tree on Maui dating back to 1873.

Lahaina Banyan Tree

Lahaina Banyan Tree

The tree is truly impressive, with 16 separate trunks all connected to the same tree. It’s definitely one of the most unique photography spots on Maui!

If you’re looking for a place to stop for lunch, you won’t have to go far. As you wander along Front Street, you’ll have an endless choice of restaurants to pick from ranging from cheap eats to higher end.

I ate lunch at Down the Hatch which has some nice seafood options for good prices. Captain Jack’s Island Grill and The Lahaina Fish Co. are popular and highly rated restaurants where you can’t go wrong for lunch.

Lahaina Harbor, Maui

Lovely scenery at Lahaina Harbor

Baby Beach

Once you’ve finished strolling through the pretty streets of Lahaina, make your way to the nearby Baby Beach. This beach is really picturesque and a nice spot to kick back in the sand and soak up the sun for a few hours.

With crystal clear, calm water, it’s a lovely swimming spot and a place where sea turtles can often be spotted. For those traveling with kids, as the name suggests, Baby Beach really is an ideal family friendly beach.

Don’t forget your mask and snorkel here, there’s loads of fish to be seen in the shallow lagoon. If you’re new to snorkeling or letting the kids try it for the first time, this is the spot for it!

Traditional Luau

Immerse yourself in true Hawaiian culture by attending an authentic luau on the beach at sunset. This is an excellent way to finish another awesome day on Maui and provides a traditional experience you’ll never forget.

Upon arrival at the luau, you’ll be greeted with a lei before diving into the epic all-you-can-eat Hawaiian BBQ buffet. Marvel at the Polynesian dancers and fire twirlers as the sun lights up the sky and sinks below the horizon.

You can expect an exciting evening full of delicious food, exotic performances and Hawaiian traditions all while watching a magical sunset by the beach.

A 10 minute drive north from the town center of Lahaina will bring you to the location of this oceanfront luau in Kaanapali. Being one of the top luau’s in Maui, it’s best to reserve your tickets online ahead of time.

Day Four – Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is likely to be a stand-out highlight of your 5 day Maui itinerary. With infinite waterfalls and spectacular coastal scenery around every corner, there is a reason it’s one of the most iconic drives in the country!

To do the Road to Hana properly, I would highly recommend driving the entire loop and spreading it out over two days. There are way too many amazing Road to Hana stops to possibly fit everything into a single day trip.

However, I know that holiday time is limited and if you only have 5 days on Maui, then it’s better to do it in a day trip rather than miss out on this bucket-list drive altogether!

Road to Hana Driving Tips

Leave early – This will be a very long day of driving and exploring, it’s important to leave as early as possible (aim for 7am) to ensure you fit everything in without feeling rushed.

Gas – Make sure to fill up your car before beginning this drive, just like the drive up to Haleakala, there are no gas stations along the Road to Hana. The last chance to buy gas before beginning the drive is in the town of Paia. Be sure to fill up at Costco or Safeway to save money on gas before hitting the road.

Don’t rush it – Driving the Road to Hana is all about admiring the amazing scenery along the way, there’s really no need to be in a hurry. The road is extremely twisty and windy which means extra caution should be taken as you make your way around many sharp bends and single-lane bridges.

Only park in designated areas – You’ll notice there is a serious lack of space to pull over throughout this drive, especially near beautiful viewpoints and waterfalls.

Instead of immediately stopping as soon as you see something nice, continue driving until you find adequate space to park the car and then walk back to the waterfall or viewpoint.

This happens a lot on the Road to Hana, don’t be one of those people who stops on a single lane bridge.

Don’t overtake cars – It may seem obvious but I was actually surprised at the amount of people I saw trying to overtake cars on blind corners. The road is narrow and winding for the entire journey, overtaking is not permitted or safe at any point in the drive.

Black Sand Beach, Waiʻānapanapa State Park

Stunning coastal views in Waiʻānapanapa State Park

**Important tip for visiting Black Sand Beach** Due to the rise in popularity of the Black Sand Beach in Wai’anapanapa State Park, it is now required to book a reserved timeslot to enter the park in advance.

You can easily book this online but it’s important to note that you cannot book it on the day you plan to visit.

You must book your timeslot anytime before the day of visiting otherwise you will be turned away at the gate. Book your entry to Wai’anapanapa State Park online at the official state park website.

Entry Ticket: $5 per person

Parking Permit: $10 per vehicle

Opening Hours: 7am – 6pm daily, choose an available time slot between these hours when buying your permit online.

Day Five – Maui Upcountry + Paia + Dinner at Mama’s Fish House/Paia Fish Market

Exploring Maui’s Upcountry will give you an entirely different perspective of the island. Located on the steep slopes of Haleakala, this part of Maui showcases an unbeatable panoramic view over the west mountains and shimmering coastline below.

Aside from the incredible scenery, there are some great attractions to be found here too. Discover some of Maui’s quaint historic towns and experience the local culture first-hand by visiting some of the island’s best hidden gems.

On day five of your Maui itinerary, plan to check out the attractions listed below and round off the final evening of your Hawaiian holiday by enjoying a meal at the legendary Mama’s Fish House.

Visit the Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm on your five day Maui itinerary

Strolling through the botanical garden at the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm

Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm

This hidden gem of Maui can be found at an elevation of 4,000 ft, just off the Kula Highway. You can see the lavender in full bloom between the months of June – August but the real star of the show here is the panoramic view over West Maui.

The Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm is truly a photographer’s dream, so if you’re hunting for the perfect Instagram spot on Maui, look no further!

While the lavender doesn’t grow year round, you’ll find a gorgeous botanical garden where you can leisurely stroll and fill up your camera roll with stunning photos. There is also a gift shop on-site selling lavender products, coffee and sweet treats.

To be honest, I didn’t even know this place existed until my last visit to Maui but I was completely blown away by the outstanding scenery that it has to offer. With some of the best views on the island, you definitely need to check it out. Plus, entry only costs $3 per person!

Opening Hours: 10am – 4pm (closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday)

MauiWine

Situated on a beautiful historic property, MauiWine began producing local wines in the early 1970’s. This lovely winery is a must-see for those curious to sample the unique tropical flavours of Hawaiian wine that can’t be found elsewhere (pineapple wine, anyone?!).

Take your time exploring the vineyard’s picturesque grounds to see a number of heritage buildings before settling in on their outdoor patio. The best way taste the different varieties is to order a flight of wine. This will also help you choose a favourite wine so that you can take a few bottles home.

You can easily spend an hour or two here tasting wine, enjoying some light snacks and soaking up the surroundings. On their menu you can also find wine cocktails, cheeses and olives, and of course wine by the glass.

Before you visit MauiWine, you should make a reservation online to avoid waiting for a table (which sometimes happens if you visit during peak times).

Opening Hours: 11am – 5pm Tuesday – Sunday (closed Mondays)

Stopping at this small road-side stand won’t add much time to your day but the scenery makes it 100% worthwhile. After tasting some of the different flavours of honey, you can look out across the ocean for a fantastic view of Kahoolawe Island.

While you’re in the area, be sure to make your way to the island’s North Shore to find the historic beach-town of Paia. With a long history of surfing culture, the vibrant and laid-back town has a real hippy vibe to it.

Take a walk along the main strip in town, browsing the colourful shops and perhaps stopping for a coffee or a shave ice along the way. In need of some new swimwear? You’ll be spoiled for choice with loads of cute beachwear and boutique jewellery shops.

Craving some beach time? Pop over to the local Baldwin Beach or Baby Beach which has a calm, swimming friendly lagoon. Otherwise, continue your day trip toward Ho’okipa Beach.

Ho’okipa Beach

An easy 10 minute drive up the road from Paia is where you’ll find this famous surfing beach. With giant waves, Ho’okipa Beach has world-wide recognition for its epic surfing conditions.

Pull the car right into the lookout to watch the surfers ride the monster waves from this great vantage point above the beach. Due to the size of the waves, you might have guessed this beach isn’t really great for swimming. With sharp rocks near the shore, you’re better off swimming elsewhere.

The other reason to visit Ho’okipa Beach is to see the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles lounging on the sand. Yes, this is one of the best places on Maui to spot sea turtles outside of the ocean!

They can often be seen in large numbers chilling out on the beach offering a perfect chance to take photos. While it may be tempting, just remember you can’t touch them or stand near them. Keep a safe distance by staying on the designated viewing area where you can easily see them and snap a few pictures.

Dinner at Mama’s Fish House or Paia Fish Market

Just around the corner from Paia, the world-class Mama’s Fish House sits on the white sandy shores of a palm-lined cove. Dining at this famous restaurant on one of the prettiest corners of the island is the perfect way to end your five day Maui itinerary.

What makes this place so special, you might be wondering? The impeccable quality of fresh seafood dishes, unique tropical cocktails, stunning beachfront scenery and a beautifully decorated interior create a magical setting for a dining experience that you’ll never forget.

Being one of Maui’s top-rated restaurants, the prices do reflect the high quality of food and amazing views that accompany your meal. It goes without saying, you’ll need to reserve a table far ahead of time if you hope to dine here.

This place is so incredibly popular it can be fully booked out up to 6 months in advance! So if you know what date you want to eat here, lock it in asap.

If you’re on a budget but still looking for some great seafood on your last night, head over to Paia Fish Market which is a local favourite on the main street of Paia. Their menu features staples like fish tacos, grilled Mahi Mahi and fish & chips.

While I didn’t get the chance to eat at Mama’s Fish House on my last visit to Maui, I can say first-hand that the food at Paia Fish Market was awesome, affordable and it’s definitely worth stopping in there for a meal.

Spending More Than Five Days on Maui?

In addition to the Maui itinerary above, here are some more popular attractions and activities to include if you have some extra time during your holiday.

Maui Ocean Center

Discover the vibrant world that exists beneath the surface of Hawaii’s crystal clear waters. Come face to face with iconic marine creatures such as sea turtles, sharks, stingrays, octopuses and thousands of tropical fish.

Maui Ocean Center showcases the unique marine life that can only be found within the Hawaiian islands. By visiting this world-famous aquarium, you’ll gain a deeper understanding about the history of the island and the conservation of its native sea life.

Spending a few hours at Maui Ocean Center is an awesome rainy day activity. It also makes a fantastic intro to Hawaii for first time visitors.

I went there on my second day in Maui and thoroughly enjoyed the interactive exhibits, especially the glass tunnel with sharks and stingrays swimming around. The 3D Humpback Whale show at the end is impressive for all ages!

Opening Hours: 9am – 5pm daily

Tickets: $44/adult, $30/child

Lahaina Pali Trail

For an epic view over central Maui, follow this historic trail that was originally built over 200 years ago. This challenging but very scenic hike leads you upward to the Kaheawa wind farm before descending down the other side of the hill.

The hike begins at two separate locations which means that if you decide to complete the entire 10 mile hike, you’ll need two cars parked at both trailheads.

Most people who hike this trail park at one end, hike up to the windfarm and return to the same location. This takes around 3 hours to complete. Although this is not a walk in the park, the trail is easy to follow.

When I hiked the Lahaina Pali Trail, I parked the car at the eastern entrance (near Maalaea) and hiked to the windfarm for sunset which means I had to hike back down in the dark. It was totally worth it though, the sunset and views from the windfarm were really breathtaking.

I would highly recommend this hike for sunset as long as you wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes and bring a head torch for the hike down. The terrain is pretty rugged and uneven from start to finish and there is no shade at all, so don’t forget to wear sunscreen!

Iao Valley State Park

This gorgeous, lush valley is home to some very dramatic landscapes and important Hawaiian history. This is the site where the epic battle of Kepaniwai took place in the year 1790.

When you visit the park you can take a walk along a short and easy paved trail for views of the iconic ‘Iao Needle’. Informative sign posts will give you background info on the history of this beautiful place and the battle that occurred there.

The walk will take you in a loop which passes the pretty Iao stream as well as a tropical botanical garden. It’s a nice place to spend an hour or two connecting with nature and learning some of the island’s legendary history.

Waimoku Falls & Pipiwai Trail

Located within the Kipahulu region of Haleakala National Park, this famous hiking trail winds through the dense rainforest before ending at the striking Waimoku Falls.

The Pipiwai Trail makes a great addition to your Road to Hana drive if you’re planning to spread the drive over two days. The trailhead begins at the Kipahulu Visitor Center, 35 minutes past the town of Hana.

The hike takes around 2 – 3 hours to complete and it is quite popular so it’s best to start early to avoid an overcrowded trail. With stunning natural scenery such as waterfalls, streams and a bamboo forest, it’s easy to see why the Pipiwai Trail has gained so much attention.

This is definitely one for the Maui bucket list!

Dolphin Watching Catamaran Tour

If you’re visiting Maui outside of whale watching season then booking a dolphin watching tour is a great idea. Travel by catamaran to the crystal waters of Lanai passing by spinner dolphin habitats along the way.

Explore the underwater paradise near the coast of Lanai on a guided snorkeling tour. The island of Lanai is known for its vibrant coral reefs teeming with tropical fish and sea turtles.

Throughout the day, you’ll learn fascinating facts from the Marine Naturalists that accompany the tour. This popular 5 hour boat trip also includes a continental breakfast and delicious BBQ lunch on board the boat.

Road to Hana Driving Tips

Here are some of my tips to make this a successful journey for yourself while respecting other road users and avoiding fines along the way:

  • Leave early in the morning (around 7am) so that you have the full day to make all the desired Road to Hana stops without feeling rushed.
  • Go really slow around blind corners.
  • Do not overtake other cars at any point on this drive.
  • If you’re wanting to take things extra slow and enjoy the drive (as you should), feel free to pull over and let any locals who seem to be in a rush pass you.
  • Avoid suddenly stopping and parking on the side of the road (unless there is a designated area for cars to stop).
  • As tempting as it may be, do not stop on single lane bridges. If you see a nice waterfall, continue driving until you find adequate space to park the car and then walk back to the falls.
  • Fill up your gas tank before beginning the Road to Hana, there are no gas stations along this drive. Your last chance to fill up before the Road to Hana is in the small town of Paia. I would advise filling up your car at either Costco or Safeway as they are the cheapest places on Maui to buy gas.

Sweeping coastal views on the Road to Hana, MauiRoad to Hana FAQs

Is it Dangerous to Drive the Road to Hana?

The Road to Hana consists of over 600 sharp bends and 59 single-lane bridges. It goes without saying that you’ll need to use some extra caution when completing this drive. Using your common road sense goes a long way in a place like this.

After driving the Road to Hana twice, I would say it’s not dangerous if you’re a confident driver who doesn’t mind taking things slow and steady. There’s no need to rush it after all, as this drive is very much about enjoying the journey instead of arriving at a particular destination.

A typical one-lane bridge on the Road to Hana

How Long is the Road to Hana?

The official Hana Highway is 62 miles from its starting point of Kahului in central Maui to Kipahulu on the far east corner of the island.

This might sound like a short driving distance however the road is extremely narrow and winding which means you’ll be driving around 25mph for the duration of the journey.

The full Road to Hana extends past the town of Hana and loops around the backside of Haleakala, returning you to the beginning.

How Much Time Do You Need For Driving the Road to Hana?

Most people complete the drive from Kahului to Hana and back in a single day trip which takes anywhere between 6 – 8 hours. To get the most out of this world-class drive, I would highly recommend spending one night in the town of Hana to break it up.

This is the best way to experience the highlights that this journey has to offer without feeling rushed and burnt out by the end.

The other bonus about spending the night is that you’ll have the best beaches and waterfalls to yourself before the day trippers arrive. Imagine waking up and being among the first to explore the famous Black Sand Beach without the crowds and tour groups.

Doing the Road to Hana in two days will allow you to visit the amazing sites and attractions beyond the town of Hana such as Hamoa Beach, the Seven Sacred Pools, Waimoku Falls and more.

Road to Hana Itinerary for One and Two Days

While most people driving the Road to Hana turn around and drive straight back once they reach Hana, I would suggest completing the full loop by driving the “back road to Hana”. After spending the night in Hana, you will continue the drive through Kipahulu and all the way around to Kula.

This will allow you to further explore the remote beauty that east Maui has to offer. With breathtaking valleys, lush rainforests, and desert-like landscapes, you won’t regret taking an extra day to see this less touristy part of the island.

Keep in mind that the road becomes quite narrow and rough after Hana, in some sections it turns to gravel. If you’re renting a car, be sure to check with your rental car company that you will be covered for this section of the road.

For only one day on the Road to Hana, see the suggested one day itinerary below. For two days, consider leaving the Black Sand Beach for the morning of the second day to avoid crowds.

The Best Road to Hana Stops – Day One

Ho’okipa Beach Park

To kick off your Road to Hana driving itinerary, the first stop you should make is at Ho’okipa Beach. This is a famous surfing beach on Maui known worldwide for its massive waves.

From the Ho’okipa Lookout parking lot, you’ll have a good vantage point to sit and watch the windsurfers ride the impressive waves. Take a walk down to the beach to find a group of Hawaiian green sea turtles who are often seen resting on the sand.

Being one of the best places to see turtles on Maui, you can imagine there will be plenty of other tourists gathering around here. Watch them, take photos of them, but be sure to give them space.

Touching the turtles or standing right next to them for a photo is definitely not allowed here or anywhere else on the island.

A beach full of turtles – Ho’okipa Beach

Twin Falls

The first and most popular waterfalls to see on the Road to Hana are the Twin Falls. These waterfalls are not the most impressive compared to others on this drive however they are easy to access with a large parking lot and short walking trail.

There are three different waterfalls to see at Twin Falls and if you make the stop I would recommend allowing time to see all three of them. While the lower falls are the quickest and easiest to get to, they’re often the most crowded with people.

Continue following the trail to find two more lovely waterfalls with the upper falls being the prettiest. The upper falls are also great for swimming but you will need to cross a stream to reach them. Bring water shoes or flip flops for the walk.

During flash flooding, the upper falls will be closed to visitors. Allowing up to one hour to see all three waterfalls is plenty of time.

Opening Hours: 7am – 5pm daily

Parking: $10 per vehicle

Caveman Falls, Maui, Hawaii

The third waterfall at Twin Falls also known as Caveman Falls

Huelo Lookout

This little roadside stand is the next thing you will come across after finishing up at Twin Falls. If you’re hungry, you can make a quick stop here to buy a smoothie, fresh fruit or crepes.

Take a short walk behind the stand to find a nice view looking out over the palm trees and jungle toward the ocean. This is not an essential Road to Hana stop, but it won’t take longer than 10 minutes and you’ll get a scenic lookout to top it off.

Huelo Lookout, Best Road to Hana StopsRainbow Eucalyptus Forest

Not far from the Huelo Lookout, you’ll drive past a forest of beautiful rainbow eucalyptus trees located around mile marker 7. At first glance, the colouring on these trees almost appears to be painted, it is quite a unique sight.

The rainbow trees are visible from the road but can easily be missed if you’re not paying attention. As this is an unofficial stop on the Road to Hana, parking is non-existent here.

If you really want to get out and take a closer look at these fascinating trees, you’ll have to continue driving until you find enough space on the shoulder of the road and walk back to see them.

There are several other spots to see them on the Road to Hana including the Ke’anae Arboretum, so don’t worry if you miss out.

Maui Garden of Eden Arboretum

If you love tropical gardens filled with exotic plants and rare trees, then you might consider stopping at the Maui Garden of Eden.

This well-maintained park features over 26 acres of scenic trails which makes it a great place for a quiet walk.

Surrounded by lush plants and flowers as well as ocean and waterfall views, a stop in the Maui Garden of Eden will make a nice addition to your Road to Hana drive. There are even free-roaming peacocks in there!

A visit to this garden will take around 45 min to 1 hour. If you’re on a budget or trying to squeeze many Road to Hana stops into one busy day, then I would suggest missing this stop. If you’re interested in gardens and have the time to spare, then it’s worth a visit.

Entry Ticket: $20/adult, $10/child under 16

Opening Hours: 8am – 4pm daily

Maui Garden of Eden Arboretum

Honomanu Bay Lookout

As you turn the corner just after passing Kaumahina State Wayside Park, the spectacular sight of Honomanu Bay will come into view. If you continue driving a short way, you’ll soon find a large space to pull over and park on the right.

This is the perfect place to stop and admire the dramatic coastal scenery that the Road to Hana is known for. From here you can also see the Ke’anae Peninsula in the distance.

With large waves and a rough road to get there, Honomanu Bay is not a great beach for swimming. I would recommend simply taking 5 minutes to stop at this lookout, take a few pictures and continue your drive on the Road to Hana.

Click here for the location of Honomanu Bay Lookout on Google Maps.

Ke’anae Arboretum

If you missed out on the Maui Garden of Eden but still interested in seeing some tropical vegetation, then make a point of stopping in here.

This botanical garden runs alongside a stream and has over 150 different types of unique Hawaiian plants including the rainbow eucalyptus tree (which isn’t native to Hawaii). If you missed out on the rainbow eucalyptus forest, this is another reason to stop here!

While the Keʻanae Arboretum may be smaller and less impressive than the Garden of Eden, the best part is that it’s free to enter. Taking a short walk through this peaceful park is a great way to break up your big day of driving the Road to Hana.

Entry Ticket: Free

Opening Hours: 8am – 4pm daily

Ke'anae Peninsula, Road to Hana

The Ke’anae Peninsula sticks out from the Road to Hana

Ke’anae Peninsula

The Ke’anae Peninsula is one of the highlights for most people’s Road to Hana drive. Make a sharp left turn to access the peninsula from the Hana Highway.

This short but scenic drive will take you on a loop passing by rugged volcanic coastline, an old Hawaiian village, a historic church and plenty of great photography opportunities. The lava beaches that you see here are from Haleakala’s most recent lava flows.

There’s also a popular food stall selling banana bread and fresh fruit smoothies. You’ll notice that banana bread stalls are pretty common on the Road to Hana and Aunty Sandy’s on the Ke’anae Peninsula claims to be the best.

A drive around the Ke’anae Peninsula will add no longer than 20 minutes to your Road to Hana trip but the unique scenery of this place will leave a lasting impression.

If you’re going to miss any of the stops on this Road to Hana guide, don’t let the Ke’anae Peninsula be one of them!

Beautiful scenery at Keanae Peninsula

Halfway to Hana Roadside Stand

By this point in the drive, you’re probably going to be looking for somewhere to stop and eat lunch. The Halfway to Hana Stand comes up just after the Ke’anae Peninsula and offers plenty of food options to fuel your afternoon adventures.

Their menu includes sandwiches, burgers, hotdogs and all the typical Road to Hana roadside snacks. If you haven’t tried banana bread yet, you won’t regret picking up one of their freshly baked loaves.

Also, if you need to top up your cash (most stores/food stalls on the Road to Hana only take cash), there is an ATM on-site. Don’t forget to pose for a photo with the iconic “Halfway to Hana” sign before you go!

Halfway to Hana Sign

Wailua Valley State Wayside Lookout

Keep your eyes peeled for this stop because it’s very easy to miss with no warning and little signage. There are only a few spaces for cars here, so if it’s full you can try again on the way back.

Follow a set of stairs on the right to find an amazing view looking inland at the dense jungle-filled valley with several massive waterfalls in the distance. The other side of the lookout shows a panoramic view over Wailua Village and the ocean.

This lookout is a must-see on the Road to Hana and will only take you around 10 minutes to appreciate the incredible view and take a few photos.

Wailua Valley Lookout, Road to Hana

Wailua Valley Lookout

Upper Waikani Falls

As you pass these stunning falls, you may wonder how such a famous Road to Hana stop is so difficult to access?! You can see them directly from your car as you drive over the single-lane bridge. Yet, there is absolutely no space to pull over.

A commonly occurring thing on this drive is seeing the most epic scenery but having no where to stop the car! The trick here is to keep driving a short way past the falls until you see a large space to pull over on the left side of the road. Then you’ll need to carefully walk back along the narrow shoulder of the road until you reach the waterfall.

For those interested in exploring this area further, you can follow a path under the bridge to access the waterfall and swim in the pool.

The Upper Waikani Falls are surrounded by lush, green jungle and a tall, moss-covered cliff which makes for a magical and otherworldly scene to capture. Aside from being one of the nicest waterfalls on the Road to Hana, these falls were also one of my favourite Instagram spots on Maui.

So, is it worth the hassle to see these waterfalls? In my opinion, yes it is!

Upper Waikani Falls

Pua’a Ka’a Falls

Finally, a waterfall where you can easily stop and explore! The pretty Pua’a Ka’a Falls are located within a State Park at mile marker 22 on the Road to Hana.

With parking spots, restrooms and picnic tables, the facilities here make it an easily accessible rest-stop and a nice place go for a swim. A short trail takes you to a larger waterfall located upstream from the lower falls.

The only downside here is that the easy accessibility makes it really popular and at times very crowded. The limited parking spaces tend to fill up quickly which means you’ll need to be lucky to get a spot here on a busy day.

Pua’a Ka’a Falls, Road to Hana Maui

Pua’a Ka’a Falls

Hanawi Falls

Your next stop on the Road to Hana will bring you yet another set of breathtaking waterfalls, Hanawi Falls. Two separate waterfalls flow side by side through verdant vegetation, converging into a single stream.

Hanawi Falls offers a perfect little natural pool to cool down on a hot day, provided you can find space to park your car. I briefly stopped here to get out, snap a few pictures and take in the lush scenery around these falls.

I saw a few people swimming in the pool but it wasn’t crowded at all. There is a small space to park after the Hanawi Falls bridge, so if you’re lucky you could have these stunning waterfalls all to yourself!

Hanawi Falls - Road to Hana

Makapipi Falls

The dramatic scenery of this waterfall results in one of the most iconic scenes to capture on the Road to Hana. The Makapipi Stream flows rapidly (depending on rainfall) before making its vertical drop directly below the bridge. Parking space is available on the right immediately after crossing over the bridge.

I found the best spot to admire this waterfall was to continue walking past the falls until the road curves around and you can look backward. This gives you the full view of the powerful waterfall cascading under the bridge.

Best Road to Hana stops, Makapipi Falls

Makapipi Falls

Hana Lava Tube

As you make your way closer to Hana, you’ll have the option to explore a lava cave. This fascinating natural wonder is open to the public daily for self-guided tours.

Entry to the cave includes a flashlight which is very necessary in an otherwise pitch dark environment. As you wander through the underground maze, you’ll find informative signs giving you insight into how the formation came to be.

For those interested in escaping the crowds for a unique adventure, then the Hana Lava Tube is worth a stop! If you’re travelling with kids, this makes for a great family activity on the Road to Hana.

Entry Ticket + Flashlight: $15/adult, Free/children 5 and under

Opening Hours: 10:30am – 4pm daily

Black Sand Beach Cave

Peeking through a sea cave at Black Sand Beach

Black Sand Beach, Waiʻānapanapa State Park

An essential Road to Hana stop that is likely to be one of the major highlights of your road trip, the famous Black Sand Beach. This gem is located within Wai’anapanapa State Park, just before entering the town of Hana.

Nestled in a small cove, the black sand of this volcanic beach contrasts beautifully against a bright green jungle. This mesmerizing beach is special as it’s one of the only black sand beaches on the entire island of Maui!

With plenty more to see in the state park, you could easily spend a few hours exploring all of the natural beauty it has to offer. Featuring lava caves, volcanic rock arches, blow holes and awe-inspiring coastal views, it’s not hard to see why this park has become so popular.

**Important** To keep the large crowds of tourists under control, you are now required to book a reserved timeslot to enter Wai’anapanapa State Park. If you forget to book online and show up on the day, you will unfortunately be turned away at the gate!

Book your entry to Wai’anapanapa State Park online before you go by visiting the official website. You must book your time slot before the day of visiting, this means you cannot book it on the day you plan to visit.

Entry Ticket: $5 per person

Parking Permit: $10 per vehicle

Opening Hours: 7am – 6pm daily, choose an available time slot between these hours when buying your permit online.

Black Sand Beach - Maui

The amazing Black Sand Beach

Red Sand Beach (Kaihalulu Beach)

Tucked away within a small, secluded bay near the town of Hana, the Red Sand Beach is another mind-blowing natural attraction on the Road to Hana. This place resembles a real-life painting with dark red sand backed by a crescent-shaped cliff and glistening turquoise water.

The Red Sand Beach is an unofficial stop on the Road to Hana as getting to it requires following an unmaintained trail with steep drop-offs and uneven ground.

It goes without saying that you should only attempt this trail if you’re physically fit and wearing appropriate shoes. In my opinion, it’s not safe to bring small children.

To get there, drive to the end of Uakea Road and park on the side of the street. Begin the hike once you see a yellow gate. Walk across the field behind the gate to locate the trailhead which leads to the beach.

The hike only takes around 10 minutes to complete but after several landslides, it’s up to you whether it’s worth braving the hazardous trail.

Hana Food Trucks

When you finally arrive in the town of Hana, you’re probably going to be pretty hungry. Head straight over to the Hana food trucks for a great selection food options which offer a quick and affordable alternative to a sit down restaurant.

Whether you’re craving burgers, burritos or Thai food, there’s a truck to please everyone in your group. This is the perfect place to stop and grab a meal before making the long drive back.

The Best Road to Hana Stops – Day Two

Hamoa Beach

The combination of turquoise water and golden sand in front of a green jungle have ranked this gem among the top beaches on Maui. Located a short drive past Hana, it’s well worth your time to make a stop here to take in the scenery or go for a dip.

If you’re planning to spend the night in Hana, you’ll be well positioned to enjoy this picturesque beach crowd-free. Depending on the conditions, the waves can sometimes be very strong here which makes it a popular spot for surfers.

When it’s calm, this crescent shaped cove is the ideal place for a swim surrounded by stunning scenery.

Beautiful Hamoa Beach

Waioka Pond (Venus Pool)

The next Road to Hana stop that I will recommend is a natural swimming pool surrounded by volcanic rock with a view overlooking the ocean.

Often referred to as “Venus Pool”, this scenic pond is a peaceful spot as most people bypass it, eager to explore the more famous stops on the Road to Hana.

To get there, follow a moderately difficult trail for around 10 minutes. With cliffs of varying heights, it’s a fun place for those who enjoy rock jumping.

This pool is prone to flash flooding and can turn dangerous very quickly. Swimming at Waioka Pond should be done at your own risk.

Check the weather conditions before visiting and do not swim here if the weather changes and suddenly turns to heavy rain. After a big rainfall, the water can appear murky and brown.

Waioka Pond (Venus Pool)

A hidden gem of the Road to Hana, Waioka Pond aka Venus Pool

Wailua Falls

A short trail from the Hana Highway brings you to one of Maui’s most beautiful waterfalls. The easily accessible Wailua Falls is a quick stop that shouldn’t be missed on your drive. Swimming is also possible in the pool at the base of the waterfall.

This 80 ft waterfall can actually be seen from the road as you drive past however it is worth hopping out to take a look/photo here. With ample parking just off the road, you can either get out to admire the falls from the street or follow a narrow path near the bridge which leads to the falls.

ʻOheʻo Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools)

ʻOheʻo Gulch is a lush valley home to a collection of pools which cascade into one another through a series of waterfalls. Located within the Kipahulu region of Haleakala National Park, the scenery here is really unique. It’s easy to see why this one of the most famous stops on the Road to Hana.

With great facilities and a big parking lot, it’s rare that you will find this place without crowds. Follow the Kuloa Point Trail for an easy 0.5 mile loop that passes by the “Seven Sacred Pools” and takes in spectacular coastal views.

Don’t let its nickname fool you, there are actually more than seven pools here. Depending on what time of year you visit, the pools may be flowing rapidly or dried up due to lack of rain. It is still worth a stop to take in the stunning views.

At one time, visitors could swim in the ʻOheʻo Pools however this is no longer permitted due to safety reasons. The pools can still be seen from the Kuloa Point Trail.

National Park Entrance Fee: $30/vehicle, $25/motorcycle, $15/pedestrian

Opening Hours: 9am – 4:30pm daily

**Tip** Once you purchase entry to the national park, it is valid for 3 days. Be sure to save your permit for when you watch the sunrise or sunset on Haleakala!

The gorgeous ‘O’heo Gulch – Seven Sacred Pools

Waimoku Falls and Pipiwai Trail

The Pipiwai Trail is one of Maui’s top rated hikes showcasing a diverse range of scenery. This 4 mile trail (round trip) begins near ʻOheʻo Gulch and takes around 2-3 hours to complete.

The moderately difficult trail winds along a stream through the rainforest which leads you to the base of the almighty Waimoku Falls. Standing at 400 ft, this majestic waterfall plunges dramatically over a vertical, moss-covered cliff. It’s the largest and most striking waterfall on the island.

Before you wind up at Waimoku Falls, you’ll first pass by the impressive Makahiku Falls and the famous bamboo forest. With so many beautiful things to see on one hike, it’s no surprise the Pipiwai Trail has become so popular! Starting early in the day is a good idea to beat the crowds.

Due to the often muddy and slippery conditions of this trail, it’s really important to wear proper hiking boots. Keep in mind that this trail is also located within Haleakala National Park which means park entry fees apply here.

Charles Lindbergh’s Grave

Turn off the Hana Highway at mile marker 41 to find the grave of Charles Lindbergh at the historic Palapala Ho‘omau Church.

This pretty 19th century church holds cultural significance and is set in a very serene location. The famous aviator was buried in the gardens next to the church alongside his wife.

Alelele Falls

As you venture further along the Road to Hana, past the national park, the road will start to get pretty narrow and bumpy. By this point in the drive you may have seen your share of waterfalls.

If you’re up for it you can find a hidden waterfall, tucked away from the road with less crowds than the other falls. Most people bypass this waterfall as you can’t see it from the road. If you make the effort to stop here, you might even have it all to yourself.

After crossing the Alelele Bridge, you’ll soon find parking on the left. Walk back to the trailhead which is located next to the bridge. The trail to Alelele Falls is short and easy and will have you there and back under 30 minutes, unless you spend more time swimming at the falls.

The Back Road to Hana

A narrow winding road snakes around a cliff on the “Back Road to Hana”

Huialoha Church

After Alelele Falls, the name of the road officially changes from the Hana Highway to the Piilani Highway and continues to be extremely narrow and winding.

Located on the backside of Haleakala, this traditional Hawaiian church sits alone on a remote and rugged coastline. Make a quick stop at the Huialoha Church to appreciate the unique scenery and history of the church.

Dating to 1859, it was built by the people of Kaupo who used coral from the ocean to complete construction. Huialoha Church is still in use by the local community. It makes for a pretty scene to capture as you complete your drive around the back road of Hana.

Huialoha Church, Road to Hana - Maui

Manawainui Gulch

After passing by the remote community of Kaupo, you’ll come across a lesser known stop on the Road to Hana.

The Manawainui Gulch showcases the untouched natural beauty that exists on the backside of Haleakala. The dry, desert-like conditions offer a contrast to the jungles and rainforests that you’ve just driven through.

A short walk around the Manawainui Gulch will take you to see massive canyons that were formed as a result of lava flows from Haleakala. For those who love to get off the beaten path, you’ll enjoy this wild and rugged landscape away from the crowds.

Maui Honey Bee Sanctuary

I briefly stopped at this roadside stand to try some locally-made honey. I didn’t know about this place before but was happy to find an amazing view looking out toward Kahoolawe Island.

If you’re in need of a coffee, you can also find that here. Want to learn more about the process of making honey? Take a guided tour of the bee sanctuary.

MauiWine

You may be too tired to include this stop at the end of your second day on the Road to Hana. For wine lovers, you won’t want to miss out on this beautiful winery located on a historic property.

This is a great opportunity to try some local Maui wines and perhaps take a bottle with you on your travels. You can purchase a flight of wine to sample their different varieties and include some cheese and crackers to go along with your wine tasting.

Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm

While this isn’t an official Road to Hana stop, I thought I would include this hidden gem because I really enjoyed the scenery here. It’s also very easy to reach with a short detour from the Road to Hana loop.

Offering sweeping views over west Maui and plenty of great photography spots, the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm is not to be overlooked. While the lavender only blooms from June – August, there are botanical gardens with flowers growing year round.

With stunning sunsets, incredible ocean views and rainbows every day, the Hawaiian island of Maui is an Instagrammer’s paradise. Whether you’re in the mood for shooting a beach, waterfall or volcano, the entire island is blessed with an endless choice of prime Instagram spots.

I recently spent a month exploring the island and discovering all of the most Instagrammable places that Maui has to offer and let me tell you, there are a lot!

Even after an entire month, I realized that I could probably spend another full month and still not see all of the best photo spots on Maui. The diverse range of landscapes makes it one of the most photogenic places I’ve ever seen.

To save yourself the time and hassle, I have put together a useful guide with an interactive map to help you easily locate Maui’s top Instagram spots. I managed to narrow this list down to 25 beautiful photography spots that you’ll want to add to your Maui itinerary for the next time you plan to visit the island!

Maui Instagram Spots on The Beach

It goes without saying that every beach on Maui is stunning and worthy of capturing the perfect Instagram photo. No matter which beach you end up at, you’re guaranteed to find great photography angles.

Having said that, the following beaches are home to some pretty spectacular scenery which makes them some of the most Instagrammable places on Maui. Whether it’s during the day or at sunset, be sure to include these beaches in your Maui photoshoot itinerary!

Keawakapu Beach, Maui Instagrammable Places

Keawakapu Beach

Keawakapu Beach

Located in the south end of Maui between Kihei and Wailea is this long stretch of soft sand lined with palm trees. At the north end of the beach you’ll find a green space with palm trees and volcanic rock leading into the ocean.

This picturesque spot allows you to capture the perfect Hawaiian beach scene with a backdrop of the West Maui Mountains. This beach was one of my favourites on Maui as I found myself coming back here several times during my stay.

Aside from the beautiful views, Keawakapu Beach is great for snorkelling, relaxing and catching an epic sunset.

Palauea Beach

A 10 minute drive south of Keawakapu Beach on the same coast will bring you to this small and secluded white sand beach. Palauea Beach (also known as White Rock Beach) is so pretty that it’s a popular spot for wedding photographers.

While the scenery is fairly similar to the previously mentioned beach, it is far less crowded with tourists. This makes it easier to take your photos here without having crowds in the background of your shot.

My favourite part of this beach is the vibrant turquoise water which adds a nice colour pop to your Instagram photo. I also came here to shoot a sunset one evening which was equally beautiful and I can highly recommend doing!

As you can see, Palauea Beach turned out to be one of my favourite Maui Instagram spots!

Ho’okipa Beach

As you begin the drive on the Road to Hana, one of the first stops you’ll come across is Ho’okipa Beach. Famous for its big waves, this is a popular spot to sit and watch the wind surfers from the lookout above the beach.

The other reason this beach is well-known for tourists is the huge concentration of sea turtles that can often be spotted lounging on the sand.

If you were hoping to capture the perfect beach scene with turtles and all, this is arguably the best place to see turtles in Maui. Due to the large waves and plenty of sharp rocks near the shore, this is not an ideal swimming beach.

Kuau Cove

This pretty little cove is tucked away in front of the famous seafood restaurant, Mama’s Fish House. Located just past Paia, this hidden gem can be easy to miss.

The clear, calm water make this a peaceful spot to take in the scenery while enjoying a relaxing swim. I came here just before sunset and found the perfect angle to shoot through the palm trees toward a beautifully lit sky.

When you first arrive here, you may think the beach is private as the parking lot is where you would park for dining at Mama’s Fish House. However, this is not the case and Kuau Cove is a public beach open to everyone.

Baby Beach, Paia

Just before you reach Paia, on Maui’s North Shore, this protected lagoon creates a natural pool offering ideal swimming conditions. The lovely stretch of white sand that curves around a clear, calm lagoon makes for some great photo opportunities at any given time of day.

As the name of this beach suggests, it’s a great place for young children to play in the shallow water while you relax on the soft sand. With a coral reef close to the shore, you can easily hop in for a quick snorkel.

Keep your eye out while your there, this is yet another Maui beach where turtles are frequently spotted!

Maui Instagram Spots on Haleakala

Haleakala Highway

No visit to Maui is complete without driving to the summit of Haleakala. This huge volcano takes up a large part of the island and provides spectacular views over the rest of Maui from the top.

To reach the summit, there is only one scenic road that leads you there with plenty of zigzags and epic viewpoints on the way up. As you drive the Haleakala Highway, you’ll want to stop many times to photograph the incredible view.

You’ll be glad to know that there are plenty of spots to pull over and stop for photos along the road. The weather will likely change a few times throughout your drive which gives you the chance to capture a rainbow in your Instagram photo!

Haleakala Crater

There are few places in the world where you can pose with the backdrop of a volcano’s crater! This is made possible near the summit of Haleakala.

Once you reach the visitor centre near the volcano’s summit, you can park your car and take a walk right into the crater. The trail that leads you there is called the “Slipping Sands Trail” which is 11 miles long and takes 7 – 8 hours to complete.

If you’re just wanting to find the perfect angle for a photo, simply follow this trail for around 20 minutes to get nice and close to the crater before turning around and making your way back to the top.

Sunset on Haleakala Summit

Most people visiting Maui are keen to watch the sunrise or sunset from the summit of Haleakala. On my recent visit, I opted for a sunset and was very lucky to have perfect conditions!

For several reasons, I would recommend adding the sunset on Haleakala to your Maui itinerary. You can read my detailed post about why I suggest sunset over sunrise here.

Either way, you’re in for a magical experience and some incredibly unique photography opportunities. There’s really nothing like standing above the clouds while watching the sky turn vibrant shades as the sun sinks below the horizon.

Whether it’s sunrise or sunset, the summit of Haleakala is easily the best Instagram spot on Maui!

Maui Instagram Spots on The Road to Hana

Twin Falls

The Road to Hana is full of gorgeous waterfalls and Twin Falls are among the most popular to visit. Located near the beginning of the drive, these beautiful waterfalls are easily accessible with a large parking lot and a short/easy walking trail.

Most visitors to the falls are quick to leave after only stopping to see the main Twin Falls. Instead of rushing off, allow yourself a bit more time to explore the two other waterfalls that are located a little further along the trail.

The second and third falls require a bit more walking however you will be rewarded by stunning scenery and of course, two more sets of amazing waterfalls to capture.

In my opinion, the third waterfall here is the most beautiful and Instagram worthy so you definitely don’t want to miss out! Allow around 1 hour here to explore and photograph all three waterfalls.

Honomanu Bay

Just after you pass Kaumahina State Wayside Park on the Hana Highway, you will turn a corner and begin to see a striking view of the beautiful Honomanu Bay. Continue driving a bit further until you find a large space to pull over on your right hand side.

This is where you can get out of the car and admire the dramatic scenery of Honomanu Bay. This is a little known viewpoint on the Road to Hana but it turned out to be one of my favourite photography spots on Maui.

Getting to Honomanu Bay itself requires a bit more effort of driving down a rough road that leads from the main Hana Highway. That’s why I will simply recommend stopping at the lookout to appreciate the incredible view and snap the perfect Instagram photo.

Keanae Peninsula

The Keanae Peninsula sticks out from the Road to Hana and makes an excellent addition to your drive. Without adding too much driving time to your itinerary, you’ll get to see some impressive lava formations and breathtaking coastal scenery.

On this peninsula you’ll find an old Hawaiian village, a historic church, and a popular food stall selling banana bread and fruit smoothies. I spent about 15 minutes on the Keanae Peninsula taking photos and watching the big waves crash into the lava rocks.

This is an awesome place to capture the volcanic landscape with a backdrop of the lush green cliffs dropping into the ocean.

Wailua Valley Lookout

This is yet another lookout on the Hana Highway that’s really easy to drive past if you’re not paying attention. The landscapes here are truly unique so you should really be sure not to miss it!

After you park your car, follow a set of stairs on your right to arrive at the Wailua Valley Lookout. From here you can see the lush, green valley with several tall waterfalls in the distance.

On the other side of the lookout you can gaze out over the Wailua Village toward the ocean. This stop won’t take long but it’s well worth the effort to see a combination of valley and ocean views all at once. Not to mention the amazing potential for photography here!

Wailua Valley Lookout

Upper Waikani Falls

While these waterfalls may be one of the most Instagrammable spots on the Road to Hana, they are not the easiest to access. You can see the waterfall right off the side of the Hana Highway as you drive past but there is zero space to stop the car on the narrow road.

Once you pass the falls, you’ll soon find a parking space with room for several cars on the left side of the road. Unfortunately, the only way to get there is to walk back along the (almost non-existent) shoulder with cars zooming past until you arrive back at the falls.

Trust me though, it is worth the hassle as the Upper Waikani Falls are absolutely stunning and will no doubt make an amazing addition to your Instagram feed.

Black Sand Beach, Waiʻānapanapa State Park

It’s no surprise that the Black Sand Beach is the most famous stop on the Road to Hana which also makes it one of Maui’s most popular Instagram spots.

The contrast of black sand bordered by a vibrant green jungle makes for a magical and otherworldly scene to capture. Located within Waiʻānapanapa State Park, there are many more opportunities for photographing Maui here, such as lava caves, volcanic rock arches and blow holes.

Due to its rise in popularity, the Black Sand Beach can now only be accessed by making a reservation in advance. Yepp, that’s right. You can no longer just show up on the day and expect to get in.

Booking your visit to Waiʻānapanapa State Park can be done online from this website.

Black Sand Beach - Maui

The incredible Black Sand Beach

Red Sand Beach, Kaihalulu Beach

Similar to the Black Sand Beach, the Red Sand Beach (aka Kaihalulu Beach) also makes for an eye-catching Instagram photo but it is slightly more difficult to reach.

The Red Sand Beach is a true natural wonder that is guaranteed to perform well on the gram. With its deep red sand, turquoise ocean and lush green vegetation, this place is like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

Located in a hidden cove near the town of Hana, getting to the Red Sand Beach requires following a fairly dangerous trail with steep cliff-drops. Attempting this hike should only be done by those in good physical condition and wearing appropriate footwear.

To get there, drive to the end of Uakea Road and park on the street near a yellow gate. Cross the gate and walk to the other side of the field until you reach a trailhead. After following this trail for around 10 minutes, you’ll arrive at Red Sand Beach.

Due to the dangerous conditions of the trail, attempting this hike must be done at your own risk! Bringing children on this trail is not recommended.

Red Sand Beach (Kaihalulu Beach)

Waimoku Falls

I couldn’t make an Instagram guide to Maui without including the jaw-dropping Waimoku Falls. Nestled in the dense jungle within the Kipahulu region of Haleakala National Park, this one takes a little more effort to photograph.

By following the Pipiwai Trail, you will pass the beautiful Makahiku Falls and the famous bamboo forest before arriving at the spectacular Waimoku Falls. This 400-ft tall waterfall cascades over a moss-covered cliff and is said to be the largest and most impressive waterfall on Maui.

The trail is well-maintained and is 4 miles round-trip which takes around 2-3 hours to complete. You will be rewarded for your efforts once you emerge from the rainforest and get your first glimpse of this massive waterfall.

Waimoku Falls provides the ultimate backdrop for your Instagram shoot. Because of its location in the national park, you will have to pay $30 per vehicle or $15 per pedestrian to visit Waimoku Falls.

Waimoku Falls, Road to Hana, Maui

The jaw-dropping Waimoku Falls is one of the top photography spots on Maui

ʻOhe’o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools)

You can find this popular photography spot near the Kipahulu Visitor Center on the Road to Hana. The beautiful ʻOhe’o Gulch showcases the best of the Road to Hana featuring a collection of pretty pools flowing into one another before emptying into the ocean.

At one time these pools were open for visitors to swim in but due to an increased risk of flash flooding, swimming is no longer permitted. Instead, you can follow a short and easy loop called the Kuloa Point Trail which takes you on a scenic walk passing by the famous pools.

As you take in the awe-inspiring scenery of waterfalls, natural pools and sweeping ocean views, you can learn about the people who walked these very trails hundreds of years before you.

In addition to the natural wonders that you’ll see here, this area is also home to a number of ancient Hawaiian sites. Learn about the history of this fascinating place as you pass several archaeological sites along the trail.

As mentioned above, ʻOhe’o Gulch is also located within Haleakala National Park which means entry fees apply. You can easily tie this in with your visit to Waimoku Falls as both attractions are located in the same national park.

Lahaina Banyan Tree

The iconic banyan tree in the seaside town of Lahaina is one of Maui’s top tourist attractions. Taking up an entire city block, this impressive tree dates back to the year 1873 when it was imported from India and planted in front of the Lahaina Courthouse.

At first glance, you may think that you’re walking past a bunch of separate trees before realizing that the trunks are all connected to one huge banyan tree!

With 16 trunks, it’s impossible to shoot the entire banyan tree in a single Instagram photo. If you set your camera to wide-angle mode, you’ll be able to capture the magnitude of the enchanting banyan tree.

Lahaina Banyan Tree

Lahaina Pali Trail

While the Lahaina Pali Trail may be challenging, the panoramic views over Maui and the neighbouring islands are hard to beat. I hiked a portion of this trail for sunset on my last visit to Maui and can’t recommend it enough.

The photography opportunities along this trail are endless, especially if you do the hike at sunset. In addition to the already amazing views, I was lucky to see a rainbow on the way up which made for an exceptionally epic Instagram shot!

The entire trail is 10 miles long and follows a rough, uneven rocky path for the duration of the hike. There are separate trailheads at two completely different locations which means that if you do the entire hike, you’ll have to take two cars and park at either end.

I would recommend starting the trail at the eastern entrance (Maalaea), hiking up to the wind turbines and then returning to where you started from. This should take around 3 hours to complete, don’t forget a head torch if you’re doing a sunset hike!

Proper hiking boots and sunscreen is essential here as there is no shade. For more details about planning your hike, check out the AllTrails website.

Baby Beach, Lahaina

Soft sand and crystal clear water topped off with a perfect row of palm trees, need I say more? This Instagrammable beach is worthy of spending a chilled out day at if you’re planning to stop in Lahaina.

After doing a whale watching tour in the morning, I spent a few relaxed hours at this beautiful beach. Thanks to the calm, wave-free water at Baby Beach, this is a great spot for families with young kids.

The shallow water is also home to sea turtles and lots of fish which is perfect for beginner snorkellers or children learning to snorkel for the first time.

Lahaina Whale Watching Tour

Is your trip to Maui complete if you didn’t do a whale watching tour? This may be one of the most touristy activities on the island but it is definitely worth it!

Being able to get up close to the majestic humpback whales is an experience that should be on everyone’s Maui bucket list. I would recommend avoiding the large boats and doing a small-group tour which gives you a better whale watching experience.

Booking a small raft tour ensures you’ll get nice and close to the whales which results in a better chance to take awesome photos. Most of the whale watching tours depart from the Lahaina Harbour, click here to view the small group rafting tour that I recommend.

Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm

I bet you didn’t expect to find a lavender farm in Hawaii! The Ali’i Kula Lavender field sits at an elevation of 4,000 ft on the side of Haleakala boasting sweeping panoramic views over the rest of the island.

This is a fantastic place to spend a few hours walking through their botanical garden and taking in the amazing views. The lavender blooms from June – August so if you’re hoping to get a shot strolling through rows of purple flowers, you’ll have to time your visit for summer.

While I visited in January and didn’t get to see the lavender, there were loads of other colourful flowers blooming and the views alone were worth the $3 entry! Find more info about opening hours and planning your visit here.

MauiWine

Once you finish up at the lavender farm, follow the Kula Highway south for about 20 minutes until you end up at MauiWine. Set within a historic building, this beautiful winery has been producing wine since 1974.

I would recommend sitting on their outdoor patio and ordering a flight of wine to get a sample of the different varieties. There is a light snacking menu featuring cheese, olives and crackers to accompany your wine tasting.

The scenery and historic buildings around the property are picturesque and make for some lovely Instagram photos. Before you go, you may want to book a reservation online because wait times can be long when it’s busy.

Maui Honey Bee Sanctuary

Driving south for 5 minutes from MauiWine will bring you to the Maui Honey Bee Sanctuary. Stop for the locally-made honey and stay for the epic views.

This hidden gem can be easy to miss as it’s only a small roadside stand selling honey, coffee and other bee products. After doing a wine tasting I stopped here to try some of the delicious honey that they produce on-site.

If you’re interested, you can also take a guided tour of the bee sanctuary and learn about the honey making process.

The other bonus about this place is the incredible view that overlooks Kahoolawe Island. This is a stunning Maui Instagram spot that I wasn’t expecting to find but glad I stumbled on it!

Paia

The historic surfing town of Paia provides a vibrant setting to add a nice splash of colour on your Instagram feed. You can really feel the laidback hippy vibes here as you leisurely stroll the streets.

There are loads of potential photography angles around town but the most well-known is the rainbow surfboard fence. Head over to Aloha Surf Hostel on Baldwin Ave to capture your own version of the colourful surfboard photo.

While most tourists rush through Paia en route to drive the Road to Hana, I would recommend taking some time to stop and explore the town. Wander along the main street, admiring the Insta-worthy storefronts and browsing some of the boutique shops.

Pop into a local cafe to grab a coffee or head over to Tobi’s Poke & Shave Ice to see what the hype’s all about. Oh and don’t forget to have lunch or dinner at the iconic Paia Fish Market!

Where to Stay on Maui

Where you choose to stay on the island depends on how you’re planning to spend your vacation. Below is a brief overview of each region of Maui and what it’s best known for.

South Maui – Kihei and Wailea are the most popular destinations for tourists visiting Maui thanks to the warm and sunny weather, plenty of hotels and self-contained villas, beautiful beaches and great dining choices.

Browse hotels in Kihei

Browse hotels in Wailea

West Maui – Another great option for those seeking a resort style holiday with nice beaches to relax on. Staying in Lahaina or Ka’anapali will provide you with great oceanfront dining options and give you easy access to whale watching/snorkelling tours.

East + North Maui – Staying in these areas is ideal if you’re planning to drive the Road to Hana or visit the North Shore beaches. This part of the island gets significantly more wind and rain so spending a few days here is all you need to explore the area.

Browse hotels in Hana

Upcountry – This is one of the least popular places to stay on Maui as there are fewer accommodation choices and it puts you quite far from the best beaches on the island.

However the options that are available are unique and it’s far less touristy than Kihei or Wailea. If you’re looking to be close to Haleakala for a sunrise or sunset mission, then you might consider staying in this area for a few nights.

Watching the sunset on Haleakala was hands down the most memorable highlight of my recent trip to Maui. Standing at the top of a 10,000-foot tall mountain while watching the sun sink below the clouds is a sight I’ll never forget. It’s one of those bucket list moments that deserves a spot on everyone’s Maui itinerary!

Most tourists visiting Maui are eager to set their alarms for an ungodly hour to make their way to the summit for sunrise. However, there are several reasons why you may want to save yourself the hassle and watch the sunset at Haleakala instead.

Sunrise on Haleakala has become so popular that you need to either book a reservation with the National Park Service or join an organised tour. If you’re like me and still want to experience the magic of witnessing a vibrant sky light up over an ancient volcano without the crowds, then you’ve come to the right place.

In this detailed guide I will give you all of my top tips on how to watch the sunset on Haleakala including what you should pack, the best Haleakala sunset tour, and the reasons why I recommend choosing sunset over sunrise!

How to Get to the Haleakala Summit + Driving Tips

No matter where you are staying on Maui, getting to the summit of Haleakala will be a fairly long drive. As an estimate, these are the driving times from the most popular locations around the island:

  • Kahului – 2 hours
  • Kihei – 2.5 hours
  • Wailea – 2.75 hours
  • Lahaina – 3 hours

Be aware that the driving times shown on Google maps may be slightly shorter but you also need to account for the steep winding road that leads to the summit. The bottom line is to allow plenty of extra time so that you can easily find parking before the sunset.

The Haleakala Highway may be long and full of switchbacks but the views that you will see on the way up are nothing short of spectacular. You’ll definitely want to pull over several times to jump out and take photos. Be sure to take that into consideration when planning your departure time!

On the way to the top, you may want to stop at the Kalahaku Overlook which offers an awesome view into Haleakala’s crater. This is an easy stop to make however it’s not the only chance you will get to see the crater so don’t stress if you miss it.

Haleakala Crater, Maui - Hawaii

Haleakala Crater

Haleakala driving tips – You will likely encounter all kinds of weather on this drive and if you’re lucky like me, you might even see a few rainbows! Along the drive up, you may pass through some foggy sections where visibility is low. In this case, the best thing you can do is drive slowly and keep your headlights on.

Another reason to drive cautiously on this twisting mountain road is to protect the local wildlife. You may be lucky enough to spot the Hawaiian Nene (an endangered goose) on your drive to the summit but the last place you want to see one is in the middle of the road.

Also, look out for cows on the road. When you’re driving back down in the dark, hitting a cow could be a disastrous way to end your magical sunset experience.

Is there any hiking involved? You may be wondering if there’s any hiking involved to reach the summit of Haleakala and the answer is no. You can drive yourself all the way to the top of the volcano, park your car and get out to walk around take in the scenery.

Sitting at 10,023 ft above sea level, you’re guaranteed to feel on top of the world once you reach the summit!

Do You Need a Reservation to Watch the Sunset on Haleakala?

One of the best things about watching the sunset on Haleakala is that you don’t need to book a reservation in advance. Due to limited parking spots at the summit, only 50 cars are allowed into Haleakala National Park every morning between the hours of 3am – 7am.

This means that during high season in Maui, you better believe these sunrise permits sell out very quickly. If you don’t book yourself onto a sunrise tour or reserve your spot in advance, you’re out of luck for sunrise!

On the other hand, going up for sunset gives you more flexibility and control over your day. Instead of being locked into a specific morning for sunrise, you can make the decision on the day.

This makes it much easier to plan your Haleakala sunset trip around your day’s activities and take the weather into consideration.

Entry to Haleakala National Park

Once you enter the park you will need to purchase an entrance pass at the gate. Although you do not need a reservation to enter the park for sunset, you are still required to pay the national park fee.

Entrance to the park costs $30 per vehicle and passes can be purchased online before you go or in person by credit card (cash not accepted) at the entrance station. It’s $25 per motorcycle and $15 per pedestrian or cyclist.

Once you buy your parks pass, it’s valid for 3 days. Keep in mind that lines can sometimes form at the entrance gate so you should allow enough time.

If you’re a holder of an America the Beautiful National Parks Pass, your entrance to Haleakala is already covered.

*Tip* Buying a pass to enter the national park does not include the sunrise reservation. If you want to see the sunrise on Haleakala, you still need to pay $1 and reserve your sunrise permit online in advance.

Essential Haleakala Sunset Tips

Parking – Plan to arrive early to secure a parking spot. As there is no limit to the number of cars that can enter the park during sunset, parking spaces fill up very quickly. Plan to arrive at least one hour before sunset to secure your spot.

Weather – Be sure to take the weather into consideration before beginning the journey to the summit of Haleakala. Due to the high elevation of the summit, the weather changes rapidly and sun can quickly turn to rain/clouds. Check the conditions here before you go.

Sunset time – The sunset time changes throughout the year, check the national park website for the current Haleakala sunset time.

Food/Drinks – There are no shops selling food/drinks at the summit of Haleakala, bring some snacks and warm drinks with you in a backpack.

Gas – There are no gas stations in the national park so be sure to fill up your car before making the journey to the summit. The last stop for gas before you get to the national park is at the Texaco in the town of Pukalani.

Toilets – There are toilets open to the public at the visitor’s center at the summit.

Where to watch the sunset – While the very top of the summit is the most popular sunset viewing location, you can also climb to the top of the hill near the visitor center for an equally great view and even less people.

Why You Should Choose a Sunset on Haleakala Over Sunrise

Beat the crowds – It goes without saying that the sunrise on Haleakala is a spectacular thing to see, there is a reason why it has become such an iconic Maui experience! Due to its growing popularity, you can expect to see many tour busses and crowds during this time of day.

If you’re keen to beat the crowds and have a much more peaceful experience, sunset is just as beautiful with surprisingly few people compared to sunrise.

No reservation required – Not having to reserve a day/time to watch the sunset makes it so much easier to plan your trip to the summit according to the weather. If it happens to be a stormy and grey day, you aren’t locked into a reserved timeslot.

Sunset is open for everyone and you can decide on the day whether you will make the journey to the summit of Haleakala to watch it.

Avoid an early wake up – If you’re not a fan of waking up at 3am then this reason alone is enough to choose sunset over sunrise! Instead of rushing to the summit while you’re still in a sleepy daze, you can wake up when you please and spend a relaxed day at the beach.

You can then make your way up to the summit of Haleakala on your own time and perhaps go early to see the visitor’s center and explore the crater before sunset.

Stargazing – Another great thing about watching the sunset is that you can stay a little while longer to watch the stars. Due to the high elevation of Haleakala and minimal light pollution, the skies are pristine and clear making it the ideal place to stargaze.

You’ll notice that as soon as the sun sets, everyone else seems to be in a hurry to leave. If you stay a while longer, not only will you get the summit to yourself, but you’ll get to watch the sky turn all kinds of vibrant shades until it fades to black and the stars begin to appear.

The sunset on Haleakala is truly breathtaking but there’s really nothing that compares to seeing the night sky so clearly while standing atop a volcano. If you’re into astrophotography, you’re definitely in luck on the summit of Haleakala!

What to Pack for a Sunset on Haleakala

Whether you’re planning to watch the sunrise or sunset on Haleakala, it’s pretty much always going to be cold. The summit of the volcano sits at 10,023 ft which means that the weather is significantly different than the rest of the island.

The weather at this altitude can be quite unpredictable so it’s important to dress/pack accordingly! These are some of the essential items that will make your sunset on Haleakala a more enjoyable experience. You can also read a more detailed guide on what to pack for Maui here!

Winter jacket + warm layers – It may seem strange to be packing a heavy winter jacket when it’s hot and sunny and you’ve just come back from the beach but I promise that it is necessary once you reach the summit of the volcano. Add in a bit of wind and suddenly it feels like the temperature has gone below freezing!

You should wear long pants and several warm layers under your jacket. Consider also bringing a pair of gloves and a toque/beanie. The only part of my body that was cold during the sunset was my hands because I was busy taking photos without gloves on!

Waterproof jacket – Throw one of these into your bag just in case it starts raining when you’re at the summit.

Day pack – A good day pack is a necessity for your sunset adventure on Haleakala.

Hiking boots – You’ll be walking on loose volcanic rock so I would recommend wearing hiking boots or regular running shoes. Hiking boots is the best option if you’re planning to do any walks or hikes while you’re in the national park.

Camera – You are about to witness a once-in-a-lifetime sunset from the top of a volcano! A camera (or phone camera) is an absolutely essential item so you can remember this moment forever.

Portable phone charger – Ensure your phone stays charged throughout the evening and always be ready to capture the moment by bringing a portable charger.

Collapsible water bottle – Stay hydrated and bring a full bottle of water during your trip to Haleakala National Park, especially if you’re going to be hiking.

Folding chairs – This will make the sunset a whole lot comfier. You could also bring a beach mat to sit on but lightweight folding chairs are the best choice.

Food/Drinks – As previously mentioned, there are no shops on the mountain so I would highly recommend packing a few snacks/drinks. I was very thankful that I brought a warm thermos of coffee and a few protein bars with me to watch the sunset!

Most people visiting Maui choose to stay in Lahaina, Kihei or Kaanapali which offer easy access to the beach. These are beautiful spots to base yourself on the island but if you’d like to be closer to Haleakala and have quicker access to the Road to Hana, then Paia or Kula will be a great choice.

More Things to do in Haleakala National Park

Aside from watching the sunrise and sunset from the summit of Haleakala, there are many more things to see and do within the national park. This park covers a huge portion of the island and it can be accessed from two completely different locations.

The striking contrast between these two districts within the same national park shows you just how diverse the island of Maui is. The barren volcanic landscape of the Summit District is a completely different vibe from the lush rainforests and waterfalls of the Kīpahulu District.

Summit District

If you’re planning to watch the sunset on Haleakala, I would advise leaving extra time to stop at the visitor center and go for a short walk into the crater.

There are several hiking trails to choose from in this area but the one I will recommend is the Sliding Sands Trail. Located near the visitor center at the summit, it’s a challenging 11.5 mile trail that descends from the rim of the crater and leads you through the base, passing by cinder cones along the way.

When I visited Haleakala, I only hiked a short section of this trail so I could get a better view of the crater before making my way back to the summit in time for sunset. If you want to complete the entire hike, you should start in the morning and allow up to 7 hours.

When it comes to camping near the Haleakala summit, it is possible in a designated area. See the official parks website for more details on booking an overnight stay.

Kīpahulu District

The coastal Kīpahulu District can be included as one of your Road to Hana stops. About 12 miles past the town of Hana, this part of Haleakala National Park is known for its stunning waterfalls, beautiful bamboo forests and sweeping ocean vistas.

One of the most popular things to do here is hiking the Pipiwai Trail that takes you through the bamboo forest to the famous Waimoku Falls, one of the tallest and most impressive waterfalls on Maui.

The Kīpahulu District is also home to a beautiful campground with amazing coastal views for those who wish stay longer in the area. Find more info here about reserving your campsite in advance.

Although you cannot access the Summit District from this part of the national park, you are still required to pay a $30 fee to enter.
