I would suggest checking out some things around Upcountry Maui. Paia is a cute little town that you can stop at on the way there with some nice shops and restaurants. Next, you could head over to MauiWine. The property is really beautiful and they have some good wines to try out. The Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm is also close by and the views from there are absolutely amazing! It’s definitely a hidden gem.

When it comes to driving back down, no need to worry as long as you drive slowly, carefully and watch out for wildlife. Sometimes there can be cows and Hawaiian geese seen on the road at night so just keep an eye out for them! The road is well-maintained and paved so as long as you drive cautiously there’s nothing to worry about. If you’re leaving right after sunset, there’s usually a bunch of other cars going down at the same time so you’ll be driving pretty slowly anyway. Have the best time! 🙂
