Morocco has always been a big draw for travellers, especially those looking for somewhere exotic and different to visit, whilst still remaining easily accessible from Europe. There is such an amazing variety of scenery, sights and activities in this relatively small country and it is so close to Europe that you can hit the ground running and fit in quite a lot with just one week in Morocco.

Despite its relatively small size, the sheer amount of amazing places to visit in Morocco means that unfortunately you can’t see it all in one week. To address this I have come up with 3 separate itineraries for how to make the absolute most of one week in Morocco.

Sunset over the busy

Djemaa-El-Fna Market, Marrakech

Each itinerary is geared towards a different type of travel as there are parts of the country better accessed by a car but also plenty that can be seen using public transport or in combination with short tours. There is definitely something for everyone here so read on to find the perfect one week Morocco itinerary to suit you and what you want to see.

To begin check out the highlights of each trip in the next section and click through to the trip that most interests you for a detailed description and plan.

See below for some useful tips to prepare you for your Moroccan adventure ↓

Best time to visit Morocco

Morocco is great in that the best time to visit is during the bumper season of other European destinations. You’ll want to arrange your trip between the middle of March and May (Spring), or September/October (Autumn). Outside of these periods it can be oppressively hot or freezing cold.

Renting a car in Morocco

Many major car hire companies have offices in the airports and cities of popular Moroccan destinations. We found the whole process much smoother and easier than expected and the road conditions in Morocco were also much better than expected.

If your trip involves crossing the Atlas Mountains you should consider spending a little more to get a car with a decent engine as we hired a tiny one and it was properly struggling up the steep bits!

I use google maps for navigation and always pre-download the map area whilst on a stable network as well as downloading the route before leaving. This avoids any issues of losing signal or accidentally cancelling navigation whilst out of signal.

We use this search tool as it is an easy way to compare all the companies in one go. You can also arrange comprehensive insurance for cheaper than the hire companies as well as get informed of any hidden charges.

Booking busses and trains in Morocco

The biggest pain about travelling in Morocco is that you can’t book tickets online. The websites seem to suggest you can however they will only accept Moroccan bank cards. There are online services that offer to purchase tickets for you and I have heard it works however do not have personal experience. There is of course a hefty mark up for this service.

The train company is called ONCF and you can find schedules on their website. The bus company is CTM and their website and schedules can be a little unreliable. The best thing to do is to book onward tickets as soon as you arrive in a place so you know your timings in advance and have more options.

Some guest houses may also arrange tickets for you for a fee; once you book the guesthouse you can always broach the subject in an e-mail if you are really keen to lock in advance tickets. We personally travelled in high season and didn’t have a problem getting tickets at the station.

The Best Travel Insurance for Morocco

Morocco is known as a relatively safe destination however travel is never without risk. Especially when driving overseas you want to make sure you have insurance that covers all the activities you may be involved in.

When travelling abroad, we always go with Heymondo travel insurance. They are one of the most reputable travel insurance companies that will provide you with simple and flexible coverage. Whether you are into adventurous activities or simply looking for trip cancellation and medical insurance, Heymondo has you covered.

marrakesh riad

A beautiful riad in Marrakech

Day 1 and 2

Marrakech

How to Get There:

Marrakech Menara airport has connections to many international cities and you can often grab quite a bargain. From the airport to the medina is about a 15min taxi ride or if you’re on a tight budget you can the L11 or L12 bus from the main road for next to nothing.

This will drop you off just outside the medina on the side of the Jemaa-El-Fna market square. The taxis cannot enter the medina so depending on where you stay remember that you will have to walk some distance with your bags however a taxi may be able to get you closer.

marrakesh koutoubia

The beautiful gardens of Koutoubia Mosque

Marrakech

This city is probably the most well-known destination in Morocco, and not without cause. You will be arriving into the heart of the tourism industry in Morocco and it can be a pretty hectic place to step into!

The first thing you want to do is make sure you’ve booked yourself an amazing riad, as Marrakech has some of the best. Here you can freshen up and drink some mint tea before hitting the streets. You should also buy your bus tickets for the onward journey in advance so you get the times you want. See the following section for further details.

marrakesh market

Exploring the shops in Marrakech

Your first day here I’d suggest taking it easy, take a stroll around the medina and visit the Jemaa-El-Fna market in the evening when it’s in full swing. Witness the snake charmers, magic lamp salesmen and just the amazing sensory overload of this unique place. When you need a break from the craziness then grab something to eat at one of the rooftop restaurants with amazing views over the huge market square.

Retire back to your riad and get ready for a full day of sightseeing tomorrow. I’m not going to tell you how to spend this second day as there are so many things to see in Marrakech, it really depends on your personal preferences. A day tour can be a great way to tick off a lot of attractions in one go. With just one week in Morocco you’ll want to squeeze as much into your days as possible!

Some highlights that deserve consideration are:

  • Jemaa-El-Fna Market (if you missed it yesterday)
  • Koutoubia Mosque
  • Jardin Majorelle
  • El Badi Palace
  • Palacio Da Bahia

Taxis are a cheap and easy way to get between places but remember to haggle! Popular sites such as Jardin Majorelle can sometimes have long lines so plan to spend longer than expected there.

Day 3

Ait-Ben-Haddou

How to Get There:

You can hire a car for the whole trip in Marrakech, it’s possible to do this at the airport when you land however you cannot enter the medina with a car so this gives you big parking issues. It’s easiest to pick up the car the day you are leaving but book early because pick up can take some time. It is best not to get the smallest car (like we did!) as the mountain road is unsealed in some parts and can get quite steep. The drive will take about 5 hours with stops.

Alternatively if you don’t want to drive out of Marrakech and over the mountains you can get a CTM bus from Marrakech to Ouarzazate and hire a car there. From here it’s about a 30min drive to Ait-Ben-Haddou. The major car hire companies allow one way rentals so it should be possible to drop the car back in Marrakech or in Essaouira near the end of the trip but confirm this in advance.

Ait-Ben-Haddou sunrise

A majestic sunrise at Ait-Ben-Haddou

Ait-Ben-Haddou

In my humble opinion this is the crown jewel of Morocco’s many beautiful sitesThe visually striking and amazingly well preserved clay fortress sits beside a picturesque palm lined valley and conjures exotic images of ancient desert caravans.

Spending at least one night here is a must do and getting to experience the sunrise and sunset at this majestic location is a memory that you will treasure forever. Many one week Morocco itineraries only include a day trip to Ait-Ben-Haddou which is a big mistake. I would suggest leaving Marrakech as early as possible because crossing the mountains takes some time and you want to spend as much time here as possible.

Make sure you book your accommodation here as far in advance as possible as there are only a couple of places that offer amazing view of the fortress from their balconies or even from your bedroom window! Check out Chez Brahim or Dar Mouna La Source for the best views in town.

Ait-Ben-Haddou from Chez Brahim

The view from our guest-house window, Chez Brahim

Use the cooler hours of the evening or the following morning to climb up to the top of the fortress for amazing views over the desert and down the valley. Visit the Salon Du Thé Panoramique near the final staircase for a cup of mint tea with a view.

personally find early mornings hard but getting up for the sunrise here and strolling down to the river is really something special. Your guest house will have a delicious breakfast waiting for you when you return so you can relax and fuel up before heading off to Taroudant.

Day 4

Taroudant

How to Get There:

It is paved roads all the way and they are in pretty decent shape. It’s an easy drive and will take you about 4 hours so you have time to take in the sunrise and get a good breakfast in before leaving at your leisure. Google maps will take you down the most efficient route.

Taroudant

Taroudant is a much less visited place than some of the more well-known sites in Morocco. This means that you get to enjoy this unique destination with far less other tourists and get bragging rights about how adventurous you are!

Having less tourists also means that locals are more chilled out and friendly than in some of the bigger cities. If you have your eye on some Moroccan souvenirs then consider holding off till you get here. 7 days in Morocco pass quickly so don’t miss out if you see something you like!

7 days in Morocco

City walls of Taroudant with the High Atlas in the background

It’ll be a much more relaxed and pleasant experience than the hard bargaining and occasional rudeness of the Marrakech vendors. If you’re really keen you can even participate in the leather making process at the tannery so you can feel extra connected to the leather goods you buy!

Taroudant has an amazingly well preserved city wall which surrounds it and makes for great pictures. There is even one area where you can walk along the top of the wall. Another area of interest is the Palais Claudio Bravo, you can go just for a short visit or actually stay the night. The palace has beautiful gardens and great views of the mountains and surrounding farmland.

The best thing to do in Taroudant however is just to walk the streets taking in the day to day life and finding those special spots for amazing photos of the walls and mountains in the distance. One week in Morocco will feel much longer as you stroll around and take in the country vibes.

Day 5

Taghazout

How to Get There:

Just jump back on the main road and continue on till you hit the coast. It’s a fairly short and easy drive of about 2 hours so don’t feel rushed to leave. Google maps may try to take you down the back roads as it calculates it to be quicker, it won’t be, just stick to the N10 all the way to the coast then it’ll turn into the N1 as you head north.

Taghazout

This chilled out little town was originally a Berber fishing village but has become a top spot for surfers and backpackers. You will find surf schools all over the place as well as yoga studios and artisan shops.

You probably wouldn’t expect to squeeze in a beach holiday with just 7 days in Morocco but there you go! That’s the beauty of this country, there is so much variety in such close proximity. This is a great place to wash off that desert dust.

Taghazout, one of the best places to visit in Morocco

Taghazout

If you’ve never tried surfing before you can try some lessons at the main beach and if you’re more advanced then a lot of the schools offer day trips to some of the top breaks in the area. Chill out afterwards at one of the rooftop cafes with a view of the ocean.

In the nearby foothills of the Atlas Mountains you can take a day trip to Paradise Valley, a beautiful lush area of canyons, rivers and pools for swimming. Hiking trips can also be arranged if you’re not in the mood for relaxation, ask at your guest house.

If you want to tick riding a camel off of the bucket list then this might be the place. Sunset camel rides along the beach can be arranged in town or booked via the following link. Imagine learning to surf and riding camels on the same day! Your friends will be amazed that you only spent one week in Morocco but had so many unique experiences.

Day 6

Essaouira

How to Get There:

Simply jump back on the N1 and head north for 2.5 hours. You will eventually make a turn off to the left when you get close to Essaouira but Google maps has this one covered and will take you down the correct route.

Essaouira

The beautiful port city of Essaouira has a rich history, with evidence of its use as a trading post for thousands of years. For a long period this served as the main port of Morocco, with easy access to Marrakech for the moving on of goods from the desert caravan trade routes.

The town is now somewhat of an art hub, the Galerie la Kasbah is an art gallery housed within a beautiful riad and is well worth a visit. After you’ve built up an appetite make sure to get some fresh seafood at one of the local specialty restaurants.

essaouira in one week in morocco

Essaouira harbour

The turbulent history here can be seen in the many fortifications around the harbour, which give it a unique look as well as making for some amazing photo opportunities. Speaking of which, this is where you can hunt down the famed tree-climbing goats and snap a cheeky shot to amaze your friends. They exclusively climb the argan trees which are abundant in this area.

If you missed out on a camel ride down the beach in Taghazout then you have another chance here. Speak to your guest house to get a recommendation for a good local company. If you have the skills and experience you can also hire kite-surfing gear at several shops as this is said to be a great location for the sport.

Day 7

Return to Marrakech and Depart

(Alternatively depart Essaouira)

Your trip sadly comes to an end today. You can reach Marrakech Menara airport in about 2.5 hours but remember to leave plenty of time for returning the car.

Essaouira actually has an international airport servicing a number of European destinations so depending on where you are flying you may be able to leave from here. Keep in mind that rental car companies often charge a one-way fee.

One Week in Morocco – The North

chefchaouen

Day 1

Rabat

How to Get There:

Rabat-Salé international airport has connections to many cities. You can also fly in to Tangier and get a 1.5 hour train down to Rabat if the flights work out much cheaper.

Rabat

The capital of Morocco is often overlooked by travellers in favour of Marrakech or Fes, but Rabat actually has a lot to offer. Founded in the 12th century and later used as the colonial capital by the French, the mixture of architecture and culture makes for some interesting sites. Rabat also has a slower pace of life than these other cities and can be enjoyed in a more relaxed manner.

The medina of Rabat is UNESCO listed and a wander through the winding narrow streets will take you past the ancient market to the Berber-era Kasbah and Andalusian gardens. The area is filled with pretty white and blue painted houses and offers great ocean views. The gardens are beautiful and offer some great photo opportunities.

The beautiful seaside city of Rabat, Morocco

The beautiful seaside city of Rabat

Don’t miss is the medieval fortified necropolis of Chellah which is within Rabat city. The ancient city of Salé across the river also has a number of interesting sites and offers a great view back onto Rabat from the harbour.

Definitely check it out if you have spare time, with one week in Morocco you really want to hit the ground running but also don’t tire yourself out too much on the first day!

There really are a lot of things to see in Rabat so don’t rush away to Meknes on the second day but rather spend the morning seeing some more of the city. You will have 2 nights in Fes so you can arrive there a little later the following day, one full day is enough time to see the city.

Day 2

Meknes

How to Get There:

Car: If driving you can pick your car up in Rabat and it’s an easy 2 hour drive to Meknes. It’s good roads all the way and it’s relatively easy to navigate your way out of Rabat. Try to find a guesthouse offering parking in Meknes as this really helps to eliminate a lot of hassle and bag carrying.

Train: There are regular trains departing Rabat for Meknes. The train will take just over 2 hours and leaves every hour, this usually doesn’t have to be booked in advance but in busy periods you should consider booking on your first day in Rabat.

Meknes

Meknes is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco and probably the least visited, the others being Marrakech, Fes and Rabat. There are a lot of historical sites here as the city was founded in the 11th century and became Morocco’s capital for a time under Sultan Moulay Ismaïl

Whilst ruling from Meknes he fortified the city with massive walls and ornate gates and created a huge palace complex. A lot of this construction remains intact today and you can make a really good day of walking between the gates, making sure you take in the medina and some of the better preserved sections of wall.

Meknes - One Week In Morocco

The amazing Bab Mansour Gate of Meknes

The pace of Meknes is slower than that of the other three imperial cities so it makes for a great visit between Rabat and Fes. The other thing you should consider whilst in Meknes is a visit to the roman ruins of Volubilis. While not the most extensive or intact ruins in the world, their location in the tranquil countryside is an attraction. The ruins are 40 minutes north of town on the N13.

If you’d prefer to visit a winery named after the ruins (a rare find in the largely dry country) then on the exact opposite side of town, about 25 minutes away, you will find Volubilia-Domaine de la Zouina. If you make it here then be sure to pick up a couple of bottles as it will be hard to come by on the rest of the trip.

As mentioned in the previous section, you will have a full day to explore Fes so you don’t need to rush off the following day. If you feel like you have more to see in and around Meknes then take the whole morning, it’s only a short trip to Fes. A lot of one week Morocco itineraries include this as a day trip from Fes and this is possible if you don’t wish to switch accommodation an extra time, I personally like to experience a night in different places and feel it makes the week seem longer.

Volubilis - One Week In Morocco

Day 3 and 4

Fes

How to Get There:

Car: It’s about a one hour drive from Meknes to Fes. Google maps may route you down one of several routes. Keep in mind you are aiming for Fes-El-Bali, the old medina, rather than the modern city centre. The most direct route to get here is the N6.

You cannot enter the medina with vehicles but there are a number of parking areas around the outside. It is best to ask your guest house for a recommendation on the closest one, if they can’t help then search google maps for parking close to where you will stay.

Fes market

Some amazing handicrafts in Fez

Bus/Train: The train is your best option here. It’s only a 45 minute trip and the station in Fes is within walking distance of the medina. There are regular departures at all times of the day and you should book your tickets when you arrive in Meknes as you’ll be at the station anyway.

CTM also offers a bus between the two cities but this takes longer, is less comfortable and more difficult to book, so probably stick with the train unless you’re a die-hard fan of busses!

Chouara Tannery - Fez Morocco

The ancient Chouara Tannery in Fes

Fes

Fes is a destination that has the ability to exceed expectations and leave you pleasantly surprised. Whilst sometimes overshadowed by Marrakech, the medina of Fes is actually a massive pedestrian only area and the lack of mopeds almost killing you makes a big difference to your enjoyment level when walking the streets!

The winding streets and alleys of Fes are packed full of quaint little shops and there are always surprises to be found down little side streets. There are a number of beautiful mosques and madrassas to be found, including the oldest continuously operating university in the world.

Of course the biggest draw-card is the much photographed tanneries and leather shops. The Chouara Tannery dates from the 11th century and is still in operation today. The classic views are from the rooftops of the surrounding shops and indeed this is the only way to properly see the tannery.

Wandering the beautiful streets of Fes - One Week in Morocco

Beautiful streets of Fes-El-Bali

Shop 10 and shop 64 offer probably the best angles for photography. There is no charge to go to the rooftop but the shop attendants are very attentive and friendly so we bought a little something as a gesture. Probably save any major purchases for elsewhere however as there are mark ups at these stores, still the prices aren’t too bad if something really catches your eye. Remember to haggle!

Your first task when arriving in Fes should be to book your bus ticket for Chefchaouen. There are limited buses so busy periods can be difficult. There is a CTM office in the main city and unfortunately you have to get a taxi there in order to buy tickets but it’s not too pricey. Even better is if you can arrange to have your guesthouse buy them for you in advance, some places offer this service for a fee.

Day 5 and 6

Chefchaouen

How to Get There:

Car: It’s a fairly solid drive of about 4 hours with a break included. If you follow google maps then the roads are decent if a little winding. As in Fes, the old town of Chefchaouen doesn’t have vehicle access so it is best to know where you are going to keep your vehicle before you leave. Some guesthouses just outside of the old town have parking which will be very convenient.

Bus: CTM has several departure times per day from Fes. This is a busy route so it is best to visit the ticket office when you arrive in Fes and get your tickets in advance. While you are here you should also be able to arrange your onward ticket out of Chefchaouen however this can also be booked later if you wish

The ticket office is in the main city but only a fairly short taxi ride away, if you tell the driver ‘CTM bus station’ they will know. Ask your guest house for an up to date price you should expect to pay for the taxi and negotiate this in advance.

Restaurant in Chefchaouen

A restaurant in Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen

The ‘Blue Pearl of Morocco’ has garnered international fame in recent years due to the rise of photo sharing on social media. This beautiful city nestled away in the Rif Mountains has become a tourist hot-spot but it is for more reasons than just being blue. This will be a top highlight of your one week in Morocco I promise!

The old town of Chefchaouen has a relaxed and carefree vibe that is really disconnected from the more fast paced cities frequently visited by travellers. It’s a place where you can stroll around at your own pace, shop for unique local goods without hassle and just relax amidst the blue hues as they contrast with the rich green tones of the surrounding mountains.

Looking for the best things to do in Chefchaouen? Here are the top 10 that you shouldn't miss!

There are not too many specific sites to visit in the town, it is rather the town itself that is the attraction. There is however a kasbah and old mosque in the town square which provides for nice views from one of the many surrounding restaurants.

One of the best things to do in Chefchaouen is a hike up to the Spanish Mosque for great views of the town nestled between the mountains. If you’re a keen hiker/walker then you can also visit the nearby Akchour waterfalls and Talassemtane National Park.

After a day of seeking out all the best photo ops and maybe snagging a handcrafted local souvenir or two you should seek out one of the rooftop restaurants around town. These offer a great place to watch the sun set over the mountains as well as offering some of the best food I had in Morocco.

Chefchaouen - one of the best places to visit in Morocco!

Day 7

Return to your city of choice and depart

Car: Tangier is the easiest port of departure, being about a 2 hour drive. Depending on where you can find the cheapest flights however you can always return to Fes in about 4 hours or back to Rabat also in about 4 hours.

Bus: You can get busses to multiple locations from Chefchaouen. The closest is Tangier but be aware that some of the busses stop in Tetouan so the trip may be 3 hours rather than 2. Ask when you are buying tickets to confirm. You can also get CTM busses to Fes or Rabat if you wish to depart from these locations instead.

Day 1 & 2

Fes

How to Get There:

Fes Sais International Airport has connections to many cities around the world and frequent flights. It is also possible to get a train from other major cities in Morocco if you have been travelling elsewhere prior.

Fes

One of the imperial cities of Morocco and steeped in history, Fes is a great place to start off your one week Morocco itinerary. There are some great riads on offer here so try to find the perfect one to start your trip off right. The location you’re aiming for is in or at least close to Fes-El-Bali, which is the old medina and home to most of the attractions you have come to see.

The narrow cobbled streets of the medina are flanked by all manner of artisan stores and local eateries. The whole medina is a huge pedestrian only zone which makes it so relaxing and nice to stroll around when compared to the busy streets of Marrakech. The ancient tanneries of Fes still operate to this day producing leather which is fashioned into many types of goods, it’s a great place to pick up some absolute bargains but make sure you haggle well!

Entrance way into Fez medina

Entering the Fez medina through a majestic gate

The Chouara Tannery is the big draw-card here, one of the oldest in the world and dated back to the 11th century, this is an attraction not to be missed. To view the iconic scene you will need to ascend to the roof of one of the surrounding shops, the shops are required to allow you access to the roof and most of them are very welcoming and friendly.

They will give you a short tour and speech then leave you to it; you are not required to make a purchase but we bought something small at the end as a show of gratitude. Check out shops 10 or 64 for some of the best views.

Fes leather shop

One of the leather shops flanking the tannery

There are many other attractions to see here aside from this famous tannery. Fes was once capital of the Marinid sultanate and has some great Moorish architecture including walls, mosques, madrassas and a grand palace (of which you can only view the gate unfortunately). The oldest continuously operating university in the world is also housed within Fes-El-Bali.

If you get in fairly early on the first day and see most of the city then you can always check out some of the surrounding area on a day trip the following day. Alternatively, dig a little deeper into Moroccan culture with a cooking course or guided tour. There are a few good options below; you may see offers for a Chefchaouen day trip but it’s probably best to avoid as it’s a lot of driving in one day. You will have a long drive tomorrow so probably best to take it a little easy whilst visiting Fes.

Days 3 to 5

The Sahara Desert

The vast eastern desert region of Morocco can involve some lengthy and boring stretches of driving and is not the easiest place to organise buses and accommodation. Given that you only have a week in which to travel this region a tour is really the best option to squeeze in a lot of sites without exhausting yourself driving and trying to arrange accommodation.

This awesome 3-day desert tour will take you from Fes to Marrakech with some amazing experiences in between.

The tour begins with a drive through the middle Atlas and into the amazing desert landscape surrounding Merzouga. You will get to have the absolutely magical experience of watching a desert sunset from camel back and spending the night in a nomadic style camp. If you haven’t heard of this place then just plug “Erg Chebbi” into Google images and feast your eyes.

Zagora desert camp - Morocco

Desert camp in the Sahara

The next day will take you down part of the road of 1000 Kasbahs and you will visit a desert oasis town as well as one of the most stunning gorges I have ever seen. These areas of Oasis are so beautiful and fascinating, the rivers of date palms flowing down the valleys are such a unique sight. You’ll spend the night in a desert town where you can enjoy the beautiful views with your traditional Moroccan dinner.

The spectacular Todra Gorge

The spectacular Todra Gorge

The third day you will pay a visit to the epic fortified mud fortress of Ait-Ben-Haddou and explore this ancient Kasbah with a guide. I really loved this destination and it is a shame not to be able to spend a night here however with the time constraint of one week sacrifices have to be made.  Still you will get to explore and climb the fortress as well as cross the iconic river bridges made of large stones.

Marrakech

Streets of Marrakech Colourful spices in the markets of Marrakech

The cultural heart of Morocco and probably it’s most well known destination, tourists flock to Marrakech year after year chasing a truly unique and exotic experience far removed from their everyday life. Marrakech certainly delivers on this ideal, the hectic streets of the massive and ancient medina burst with life and activity and thrust you right into the culture of Morocco.

Walking through the huge 11th century market square of Jemaa-El-Fnaa in the evening is like being transported back in time with snake charmers, magic lamp salesmen and all manner of other vendors competing for your attention. Take my advice and book a table for dinner at one of the surrounding rooftop restaurants for an amazing view over the whole market. Do be aware of pickpockets and scams in the market as unfortunately this kind of thing is fairly common.

A couple walks in front of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech

Exploring the incredible Koutoubia Mosque of Marrakech

There are so many sites in and around Marrakech it’s hard to fit everything in. Some of the ones you shouldn’t miss are the 12th century Koutoubia Mosque, just across the street from the market square and surrounded by gardens, it’s a great place to take a break from the busy medina. Another beautiful and peaceful garden to retreat to is the Jardin Majorelle, a really impressive collection of cacti and other plants mixed in with beautiful blue buildings. It does get busy so plan to arrive early.

Marrakech also has some beautiful palaces with impressive Moorish architecture and gardens. Check out Palacio da Bahia or El Badi Palace and try to pick which one you most want to see! When you start to look at all the sites in this city you can see why people have to come back. The long day will all be worth it especially when you get to retire back to your peaceful riad to relax and unwind. For some ideas and inspiration check out the following properties:

Spectacular Cities

Fes

-Rick from The Road Is Life

Chouara Tannery - Fez Morocco

The ancient Chouara Tannery of Fes

The second largest city and cultural heart of Morocco, Fes is full of amazing sites and history but is often overlooked in favour of Marrakesh. The huge and ancient medina (Fes-El-Bali) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest pedestrian only areas in the world. Fes is also a great place to base yourself on a trip to Morocco as it offers easy access to a number of surrounding destinations on this list.

You can walk the cobbled alleys for hours checking out the beautiful artisan shops and the rich history of Fes without the fear of being run over by noisy motorcycles! Make sure to pick up some of the handcrafted and really affordable leather work available here, just don’t buy too close to the tannery or you’ll pay a premium!

While many people have seen pictures of the visually engaging Chouara Tannery, dating from the 11th century and one of the oldest in the world, this isn’t where the attractions end. Fes also houses the oldest continuously operating university in the world and many beautiful Moorish palaces, gates and mosques from its time as capital of the Marinid sultanate.

The medina is divided into two areas called Fes-el-Bali and Fes-el-Jdid. The larger of the two is Fes-el-Bali which is where most people stay. There are many beautiful riads to choose from for your stay and this is something you must experience whilst travelling in Morocco.

Fez Palace

The Royal Palace of Fes

Top Tips for Fes

Stay in a Beautiful Riad – Ryad Alya This is everything you want a riad to be; beautiful Moorish architecture and design mixed with super comfortable and modern furnishing. You can relax on the terrace with beautiful views of the medina or make use of the onsite hammam. I’ve always felt that beautiful accommodations like this are actually worthy tourist sites themselves!

Grab a Drink – In Fes you can find one of the few places in Morocco to grab a cold beer or glass of wine. Mezzanine is located alongside a beautiful garden and just outside the ancient city walls; making it a great place to catch some sunset views from their rooftop terrace.

Don’t Miss – Don’t be put off by having to make your way through a maze of leather shops and fend off a few touts; getting a great view of Chouara Tannery from a leather shop roof is a must. Locate shop 10 or shop 64 for the best views, the numbers are on signs above the doors. You aren’t obligated to buy anything but you really can get some good stuff at reasonable prices. If you don’t buy something after visiting then just tip a small amount at the end.

Casablanca

-Wendy from The Nomadic Vegan

Hassan II Mosque Casablanca, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Morocco

The impressive Hassan II Mosque of Casablanca

Casablana, or “Casa” as the locals call it, is Morocco’s largest city. The name was given by the Spanish, who set up trading basis here, but the city has been controlled by many different global powers over the centuries, including the French, the Portuguese, the ancient Romans and the Phoenicians.

The centre of life in Casablanca is the modern ville nouvelle (new city), rather than the old medina, which is quite small compared with the medinas of Fez or Marrakesh. For this reason, many tourists skip over Casablanca entirely. But if you’re looking for good nightlife, or you want to experience what real life in a big Moroccan city is like for the locals, Casablanca is definitely worth a stop.

Attitudes here are much more liberal and progressive than elsewhere in the country. And the city feels quite cosmopolitan, with an interesting mix of immigrants from all over Africa.

The beautiful Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca

Top Tips for Casablanca

Where to Eat – Be sure to stop in for a meal at Organic Kitchen, which offers a cosy dining area and a seasonal menu with some good options for vegetarians and vegans in Casablanca. Or if you’re a fan of the movie Casablanca, splurge on dinner or drinks at Rick’s Café, an authentic-looking recreation of the café featured in the film, complete with a piano player who plays As Time Goes By and other 1940s classics.

Must-See Attractions – In terms of tourist attractions, the main monument is the new-ish Hassan II mosque, built in 1993. It’s the third-largest mosque in the world and the largest outside Saudi Arabia, and it also boasts the world’s tallest minaret. The craftsmanship is impressive, with some beautiful tile work and water features in the interior. Most mosques in Morocco are not open to non-Muslims, but this one is an exception.

Marrakech

-Ann from The Road is Life

Sunset over the busy Jemaa el-Fnaa square in Marrakech

Jemaa el-Fnaa market at sunset

The fourth largest city and one of the most popular places to visit in Morocco is the bustling city of Marrakech. Walking through the souks of the ancient medina is like an attack on all senses. It’s hot, dusty, loud, chaotic and in your face. Motorcycles fly past as you weave your way through the narrow streets while vendors call out at you from every angle. Although it may be a crazy place, there are plenty of fascinating things to see and do in Marrakech that shouldn’t be missed out on during your time in Morocco.

Jemaa el-Fnaa square has been the lively centre of Marrakech since the 11th century. Every evening the square comes to life with snake charmers, musicians, a large food market, and plenty of little shop stalls to browse. Immersing yourself in the hustle and bustle of this busy market is an experience everyone must have while visiting Marrakech. As interesting as this place is, it’s especially important to be fully alert and aware of pickpockets and con artists while you’re browsing the market.

Not too far from the square you’ll see the Koutoubia Mosque, a 12th century mosque which is the largest in the city. Tourists are not permitted to enter the mosque, but the beautiful gardens that surround it provide a nice contrast from the streets of the medina.

Marrakech - one of the best places to visit in Morocco

Taking in the beauty of the Jardin Majorelle

Top Tips for Marrakech

Tea With a View – Enjoy a mint tea from one of the rooftop restaurants that overlook the Jemaa el-Fnaa square. This is a great place to let your guard down and watch the busy atmosphere of the square from a much more relaxed setting!

Stay in a Beautiful Riad – If you feel like splurging on a beautiful riad at any point on your Morocco itinerary, there is really no better place to do it than in Marrakech! Traditional riads provide a peaceful oasis from the chaos of the streets. Marrakech has an infinite number of beautiful riads to pick from, but it all comes down to your budget.

Here are a few popular and centrally located options to choose from:

Escape the Bustle – A short taxi ride from the medina will take you to the Jardin Majorelle, a tranquil garden full of cacti, fountains and ponds. This is said to be one of the most visited tourist attractions of Marrakech so make sure that you get there early in the morning to avoid standing in a long queue.

Rabat

-Jenny From TraveLynn Family

The beautiful seaside city of Rabat, Morocco

The beautiful seaside city of Rabat, Morocco

Morocco’s capital, Rabat, is often overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbor Casablanca. However, we urge you to stop here at least for a day or two. It’s also much quieter than Marrakech, so you can enjoy the medina without the tourist crowds you may experience elsewhere. Plus this city is situated on the Atlantic Coast, with some lovely beaches and epic sunsets. Getting around is very easy using the city’s modern tram network.

Start your day by wandering the labyrinth of Rabat’s medina, before heading to the main street of Avenue Mohammed V for a spot of lunch. Afterwards, make your way to Kasbah Les Oudaias, near the edge of the medina. This historic fortress has watched over Rabat for centuries and now makes for a relaxing stroll through white-washed streets. It’s fairly traffic-free but keep an eye (and ear) out for the occasional moped. The walk up to the top of the fortress is relatively easy and you’re rewarded with the perfect view over the city and beyond.

Across the river, Sale is the sister-city to Rabat and has recently experienced a development boom. Perhaps the best part is the short ferry ride across the waterway, which affords lovely views of both cities. The Grand Mosque is very impressive.

Top Tips for Rabat

Getting to Rabat – There are train and bus connections from Marrakech, Cassablanca and Fes. It’s also a very easy drive from Marrakech along mostly freeways.

Where to Stay – It’s a little cheaper to stay outside of the main city. We recommend booking accommodation in Temara as it’s right on the beach, and on the tram line direct to the medina.

Meknes

Meknes, one of the best places to visit in Morocco

Meknes, photo by Digital Travel Couple

Meknes is located in northern central Morocco and has an interesting history. The Spanish-Moorish style of the city is a blend of Islamic and European styles of the 17th century. It is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco and absolutely worth a visit! The other three imperial cities are Marrakech, Fes and Rabat. Meknes is the smallest and most relaxed one of the four to visit. So don’t miss it during your Morocco trip!

Known for its impressive ancient architecture, beautiful Souk, high medieval walls and detailed gates, Meknes is a perfect stop for 1 or 2 days. You can easily combine a visit to Meknes if you travel from Fes to Rabat or North to Chefchouen for example.

The highlights of Meknes are the beautiful Souk, Royal Stables, Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Volubilis, 35 kilometres north of Meknes. In the city centre you will find a lot of beautiful detailed door gates such as the Bab Mansour, small picturesque streets and beautiful mosques. The relaxing atmosphere around the Norias Bassin (known as Sahrij Swani by locals), close to the Royal Stables is the perfect resting spot after exploring the city.

Meknes, Morocco

Top Tips for Meknes

Getting There – The best way to get to Meknes is with a rental car or by train. Although the best way to get around in Meknes is by foot, a road trip through North Morocco is highly recommended!

Catch a Sunset – If you’re looking for a special place to watch the sunset from, Volubilis is the perfect spot. With vast 360 degree views on the surrounding area, this is the perfect vantage point to watch the sun disappearing behind the mountains.

Magical Deserts and Berber Culture

Todra Gorge

-Rick from The Road Is Life

The spectacular Todra Gorge

The spectacular Todra Gorge

Located far out into the desert north-east of Ouarzazate, the monumental walls of stone forming this remarkable natural wonder are an unexpected treat. Huge canyons are not exactly what comes to mind when you picture the deserts of Morocco, but this is one place you don’t want to miss as it definitely earns it’s spot on the list of best places to visit in Morocco.

The drive down the Todra River valley is also fairly spectacular, with views of pine plantations and towns clinging to the sides of cliffs. Eventually the valley begins to narrow and you pass through a vertical slit between two sheer rock faces that admits you into this almost separate world within the desert.

There are a few multi story buildings in one part of the canyon that are made to look like a small model against their backdrop of soaring orange cliffs. Vendors sell their handicrafts along the road while daring climbers can be seen ascending the walls throughout the day.

The top 18 most beautiful places to visit in Morocco

Top Tips for Todra Gorge

Avoid the Crowds! – While it is quite remote, the gorge has not escaped the notice of tour companies and there are a procession of large buses throughout the day. It feels truly magical to stand in the middle of the gorge in the silence of the morning before anyone has shown up.

Where to Stay – Luckily there are some brilliant accommodation options right nearby where you can base yourself for a couple of nights to take advantage of the stunning sunrise and sunset hours.

Auberge Camping Atlas This is the place where we stayed on our Morocco trip and can definitely recommend it. They have a beautiful pool which is great to relax in after a day of hiking. There are also camping facilities if you have a camper or equipment. The rooms and food were both very decent.

Auberge Le Festival Todra Gorge This is a really unique find out in the desert and well worth at least a one night stay. Featuring Berber styling and appearing like a little desert castle, the cave rooms, hot tub and organic garden create an artificial oasis. There are loads of hiking routes leading straight out of the property so it’s a great place to base yourself.

Merzouga – Erg Chebbi

-Kylie from Between England and Iowa

Camel riding in the Merzouga Desert, Morocco

Camel trekking in the Erg Chebbi dunes

One of the best places to visit in Morocco is Erg Chebbi. This is a large area of sand dunes that are popular with desert camps/safaris due to its fairly close proximity to Marrakech. Many different companies offer overnights trips to the dunes, often with one stop on the way, a 2nd-night camping in the dunes, and then the return journey is done all in one go back to Marrakech. Merzouga is a small town where last-minute snacks and water can be purchased before switching a vehicle for a camel!

After a camel trek through the orange dunes, visitors will arrive at their desert camp for the night. There are many options for different budgets, from basic to luxury tents! Scramble up the dunes to check out the awesome landscape, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner with a drumming party and gaze up at the starry sky before retreating for a night under canvas.

A must is to wake up early in the morning to see the sunrise and watch the desert come to life. It’s an incredibly peaceful feeling. Once the sun is up, a quick breakfast will be served before mounting the camels for the journey back to Merzouga!

Top Tip for Erg Chebbi

Pack Light! – Make sure to pack light for your trip to Erg Chebbi. For the night in the desert, you are only allowed to take a small overnight backpack that is loaded onto the camel too (bottles of water are shoved under the saddle so you don’t need to leave extra space!). Even in summer, the desert does get cold at night, so make sure to take additional layers for after the sun goes down!

Ait-Ben-Haddou

-Rick from The Road Is Life

Ait Ben Haddou - The most beautiful places to visit in Morocco

The impressive desert fortress of Ait-Ben-Haddou

Waking up to a view of this majestic desert fortress bathed in the glow of morning sunlight is one of those experiences you will never forget. The whole scene is so perfect it almost feels like you are looking at a movie set rather than real life.

The UNESCO listed earthen fortress rises up from the eastern bank of the Ounila River upon a natural elevation in the land. The sea of palms surrounding it add to the exotic vibe as well as the occasional camel train that takes you back to the time when this acted as a stop on the Berber caravan routes.

The fortress is still inhabited by several families and you can buy handicrafts made by them within the walls. There is also a small museum set up inside one of the large towers, which has been decorated with old items to appear like it may have in past centuries. You can also climb to the top for grand views across the desert landscape.

Ait Ben Haddou Morocco

View from the Salon Du Thé Panoramique

Top Tips for Ait Ben Haddou

Don’t Just Day Trip! – There are a plethora of companies offering day trips from Marrakesh and elsewhere. I think this is a mistake as this place probably tops the list of the most beautiful places to visit in Morocco and deserves some time to be spent taking it in properly. I wrote a detailed post about all the reasons why you shouldn’t day trip from Marrakesh to Ait-Ben-Haddou, including some options for how you can see it without booking a day trip.

Mint Tea With a View – Up high in the fortress is a little café called Salon Du Thé Panoramique. From their balcony you can enjoy some mint tea with an amazing view over the fortress and down the river valley. You’ll find it near the top of town, right before you start the final ascent up to the granary at the top of the hill.

Zagora

-Andrea from Happy Days Travel Blog

Zagora desert camp - Morocco

A desert camp in Zagora

Driving through the Drâa Valley on our way to Zagora on our tour around Morocco, we stopped to photograph the largest area of date palms in the whole of Africa.  The air was heavy with the sweet honey scents of ripening fruit. Our guide explained that Zagora is the date capital of Morocco, supplying all areas of the country as well as exporting huge quantities.

Zagora is also famous as ‘The Gateway to the Sahara’. It is the original desert outpost. In 1591, the Saadians set off on their expedition to conquer Timbuktu from here. In the centuries that followed, desert caravans made this isolated spot a trading post on the route between Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa, giving it a cosmopolitan character that persists today.

Since most desert tour operators are based here, almost every tourist in Zagora is heading for a night or two under canvas in the Sahara.  Invariably, they spend just one night in the town before heading off. For those who choose to stay a little longer, though, there is plenty of local colour to capture their imagination.

Zagora is the site of the iconic ‘Tombouctou, 52 jours’ sign featuring a nomad standing beside a smirking camel. The original sign, erected to tell traders they had a further 52 days of camel trekking to reach the fabled city, was destroyed in a town council clean up, but convincing copies can be seen all over town.

Top Tips for Zagora

Visit the Souk – We were lucky to be in Zagora on a Sunday when the town hosts the largest souk in southern Morocco. Wandering through the maze of stalls selling everything from live animals and fresh vegetables to second-hand bicycles and local crafts was an assault on our senses that will stay with us forever.

Where to Stay – The highlight of our stay in Zagora was our accommodation. Chez Ali was a delight. We enjoyed our first alcohol in almost two weeks, and I can’t tell you how welcome it was to soak in the pool after several long dusty driving days!

Taroudant

-By Jeanne from Learning to Breathe Abroad

Taroudant - One of the most beautiful places in Morocco

Taroudant is the perfect stop en-route to the Souss and Anti-Atlas. It does not feature on the usual tourist circuit due to its lack of iconic sights, but its charm lies in the ability to experience Moroccan life in the truly traditional way.

Taroudant is also known as “Little Marrakech” with its bustling streets, friendly souks and some of the best-preserved city walls in all of Morocco. These ancient walls are 7,5 kilometres long, set with 130 towers, 19 bastions and punctuated by 9 gates that are still in use. The Babel-Kasbah is the main gate and it is here that you can gain access to walk on the walls.

There are two main markets. Jnane al-Jaami is the Berber market which sells spices, dried fruits and delicious sweet sticky pastries. The larger Arab souk is only a 5 minute walk away and here you can find leather, antiques, jewellery and a meat market. Unlike Marrakesh, the stall owners here are not aggressive but wonderfully friendly.

Top Tips for Taroudant

  • One of the best experiences in Taroudant must be the Taroudant Tannery. As much as the tannery in Fes is an incredible sight, at the Taroudant Tannery, you get to participate in each of the tanning steps, from washing the skins, to scraping and drying them. The price of the leather goods and skins is much cheaper than Fes, so if you’re in the market for a handbag or a goatskin, this is your place.
  • An important thing to remember is that at 12pm on Fridays, everyone goes to Mosque, so the streets are devoid of people, which makes it a great time to wander the streets unhindered.

Mountain Vistas

Chefchaouen

-Ann from The Road Is Life

The most beautiful town to visit in Morocco, Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen – One of the prettiest and best places to visit in Morocco!

The magical blue city is certainly one of the most popular and beautiful places to visit in Morocco. In recent years, Chefchaouen has seen a huge rise in tourism and it’s all thanks to the internet, but more specifically social media platforms like Instagram. Surrounded by the Rif Mountains and painted completely in blue, there is no denying that this little town is incredibly unique and special. It absolutely deserves a spot on anyone’s Morocco itinerary!

One of the best things to do in Chefchaouen is simply wandering through the maze of streets around the town center. This is the best way to discover the prettiest little scenes and stunning photo opportunities that are hidden around each corner. Another must when visiting Chefchaouen is having lunch or dinner at one of the many rooftop restaurants around the town. Take in views of the lush green valleys and mountains that surround the town as you enjoy some Moroccan cuisine. Cafe Clock was one of our top picks!

If you are planning to spend a few days in Chefchaouen, you should take a day trip to the beautiful Akchour Falls. This 2-hour hike will take you through the scenic landscapes of the Rif Mountains and lead you to the falls where you can cool down and enjoy a refreshing swim in the emerald pools.

Chefchaouen - one of the best places to visit in Morocco!

Stunning views of Chefchaouen from the Spanish Mosque

Top Tips for Chefchaouen

Watch the Sunset – Looking for the best place to watch the sunset in Chefchaouen? Take a short 20 minute walk up to the Spanish Mosque  which is located on a hill overlooking the town. The trail can be easily found at the far end of town and it leads you upward to the mosque where you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view.

Grab a Drink – If you were hoping to grab a glass of wine or beer in Chefchaouen, you might notice that alcohol is hard to come by. Hotel Parador is one of the few places that serves alcoholic drinks in Chefchaouen and luckily this is not limited to hotel guests. Take a seat on their outdoor patio and enjoy a drink with a perfect view!

Ouzoud Falls

-Paul from Anywhere We Roam

Ouzoud Falls Morocco

Ouzoud Falls, photo by Anywhere We Roam

Set in the dramatic El-Abid River gorge, Ouzoud Falls is a special place and an excellent addition to a Morocco road trip. Tumbling a total of 110m across three different drops, the falls are beautifully nestled in a jungle paradise that’s a cool relaxing relief from the harsh Moroccan sun.

From the top of the canyon the views are incredible. The falls drop into the valley, cutting a swathe of green in dramatic contrast from the burnt orange landscape that surrounds it. A path zigzags down the valley wall as spray from the falls clings to dense green foliage and cools the air. It’s a beautiful part of Morocco. A tribe of mischievous Macaque monkeys roam the trees beside the falls looking for objects to steal from unsuspecting tourists.

At the bottom, the lush jungle opens up to an inviting pool with the 3 cascades of the falls plunging into the water. Despite the no swimming signs dotted around the water, both tourists and locals alike take the opportunity to cool off. Boat rides are available for very affordable prices to get a unique vantage point from which to admire the falls.

Top Tips for Ouzoud Falls

  • While there are plenty of restaurants to stop at on the way up the other side, it’s best to stop at the one restaurant on the way down. The prices are better and its generally much quieter.
  • Ouzoud Falls is an easy day trip from Marrakech, with several different tours available from most riads. Journey time is around 2.5 hours and includes interesting information about the local Berber tribes.

Mount Toubkal

-Diana from the Globetrotting Detective

hikers on mount toubkal, morocco

Mount Toubkal is not only the highest point of Morocco but also of North-Africa. It’s situated in the High Atlas Mountains at a staggering elevation of 4,167 m (13,667 ft) above sea level.

I travelled to Mount Toubkal to challenge myself and make it to its summit. The hiking trail to the peak of Mount Toubkal is a quite strenuous one with an incline of 2,367 m (7765 ft) and a distance of 16 km (10 miles) one way.

The hike begins by taking you through the picturesque and charming rural village of Imlil (1800 m / 5,900 ft) that is located at the foot of Mount Toubkal. As you move up, the trail leads you along lush green river banks, sparkling waterfalls, gentle brooks, and enormous walnut groves. One of the most amusing experiences that I had in the mountains on the way was encountering a lot of super cute creatures called mules. If you think it’s hard for you to carry your backpack while hiking, they can help you.

The trail becomes totally rocky after 3,207 m (10,522 ft). There are parts with monstrous and towering rocks you need to scramble and clamber over. I personally found it quite demanding especially at 4 am on the second day in total darkness but believe me reaching the highest spot of the mountain is an exhilarating experience and you will feel like you are on the top of the world.

Top Tips for Mount Toubkal

  • As an extreme hiker, you can complete the trek within one day from Imlil to the summit of Toubkal and back. However, most people, including myself, need 2 full days. In this case, you need to stay in the base camp at 3,207 m (10,522 ft) overnight and start the second day from here. If you want to take it easy and relaxed and enjoy nature, you better off dedicating 3 full days for the hike.
  • If you want to conquer Mount Toubkal, you need to travel to Imlil first and stay there one day to organize your hike for the next day. In the end, after this epic accomplishment, by all means reward yourself with another day in Imlil just to rest your body.

Imlil

-Suzanne from Meandering Wild

Kasbah du Toubkal, Imlil Morocco

Kasbah du Toubkal Hotel, Imlil

Imlil is a small Berber village located 60km south of Marrakech. It is an easy journey through stunning countryside to reach the village making it a perfect retreat from the bustle of the city as a day trip. There is limited public transport out to the village but it is possible to use shared taxis from Marrakech or book your own car and driver. The journey takes a few hours and there are a number of interesting stops along the way.

Imlil is made up of a few small streets which have a number of different riads and restaurants as well as walking gear suppliers and small shops. Above the village is the beautiful Kasbah du Toubkal hotel which allows travellers to find some secluded luxury away from Marrakech.

The main reason for visiting Imlil is the mountain trekking. It is the starting point for treks to Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. The village is buzzing in the summer months with guides looking for walkers and the cafes full of people relaxing after exploring the surrounding mountains.

If Mount Toubkal is beyond your reach then just outside the village are the Imlil cascades. These small waterfalls are an easy walk through walnut groves following the river from the village towards the higher peaks and make a nice excursion after the journey from Marrakech.

Top Tips for Imlil

  • Take your time, the altitude makes everything take a little bit longer
  • Ensure you have sunscreen. Although it is much cooler here the sun is just as intense
  • If you want to reach the summit of Mount Toubkal you must have a guide. Make sure you make contact with the official guiding centre –Bureau des Guides in Imlil rather than relying on a guide who is touting around the village.

Essaouira

Essaouira-Best Places to Visit in Morocco

Essaouira port, photo by The Travelling Twins

Considered by many as the most beautiful port in Morocco, Essaouira is a perfect example of an 18-century walled city, having been built in line with the philosophies of up-to-date European military architecture but in North African style. Since the beginning, the city has been an important global trading and tourist seaport.

Essaouira is just a 2-hour drive southwest of Marrakech. The journey itself to the town is a sight to behold, with newly tarmacked roads passing through miles of Argan tree plantation and beautiful villages.

I have to admit, this was one of the most enjoyable drives we have ever had. But more was awaiting us. The moment we hit the unbelievable expansive bay and open waterfront of this buzzing seaport, we were pleased to have escaped the hectic cities of Morocco, albeit for a few days.

We were longing for a serene gateway, and as luck would have it, we got to stay in a beachfront hotel, Madada Mogador. It has a roof terrace with sweeping vistas of the beach which makes it great for watching the sunset. There is also an onsite restaurant which we liked a lot, not only for the delicious Moroccan dishes but also for the cooking classes.

The beach is segregated by activities – one section is a sweeping sandy beach that is perfect for horse riding and dog walking, while another section is for restaurants, beach clubs, and bars.

Essaouira is also popular in pop culture, having appeared in many films and series such as Othello (1952) and the epic HBO fictional series Game of Thrones.

If you are planning a trip to the stunning old medina, the best way to get there is by driving, although you can also use public buses or taxis.

There are plenty of things to do in Essaouira but you shouldn’t miss:

  • strolling through the souks and medina
  • buy some local art
  • Visit the old fort – one of the locations of Game of Thrones
  • Ride horses on the beach

Al Hoceima National Park

Al Hoceima National Park, Morocco

Bades Island, photo by Brainy Backpackers

Al Hoceima National Park is a true gem on the northern Mediterranean coast and should absolutely be added to your Morocco itinerary. The park is crisscrossed with dirt paths and dotted with small Berber villages. Needless to say, this is a paradise for outdoor lovers. Whether you like to go hiking or cycling, there are numerous options. The best months to go where temperatures are pleasant for these activities are April, May, and October.

A vast part of the national park is marine park to protect endangered species like Monk Seals and a large colony of Osprey that live on the coast. Other wildlife you might see are dolphins and sea turtles. There is also a large Thuya Forest that is protected by the national park.

One of the highlights, other than wildlife, is the small Spanish territory island, Bades, which is connected with the mainland through a narrow sand strip with an idyllic beach. There are picnic tables and benches with great views of Bades Island which makes the perfect place for a lunch break.

Top Tips for Al Hoceima National Park

  • Stay at Eco-Camping Cala Iris if you have a car. They make the absolute best Tagine and can make it vegan on demand. Just let them know in the morning that you want dinner and you can eat with a mesmerizing view over Cala Iris at sunset.
  • Another option is to stay in Al Hoceima on the other part of the national park. There you’ll find restaurants, beaches, and shops. If you go for multi-day hikes, stay in the Berber villages in the park.

Legzira Beach

-Diana from The Globetrotting Detective

The impressive Legzira Beach of Morocco

Legzira Beach is situated in Tiznit Province in South-western part of Morocco approximately 150 km south of Agadir and 10 km north of Sidi Ifni on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

The beach is famous for its red sandstone formations, in particular for the two stunning rock archways, and mesmerizing sunsets. The 30-meter archways were formed naturally after years of erosion. Unfortunately, one of the arches collapsed in 2016, due to crashing movements of the sea. The second archway might have the same destiny sooner or later.

Nevertheless, in my opinion Legzira Beach is still the most extraordinary and exquisite beach in Morocco. It’s a paradise for paragliders, surfers and beach lovers where you can witness the traditional life of locals such as the local fishermen.

The best time to travel to Legzira beach is when the tide is low. When I was there in July before 2016, the tide was extremely low and thanks to that I could discover and explore the entire 8 km beach. Its beauty captivated me in the glorious weather. A few years later, I was there again in May and it was an utterly different experience.

The water was so high that I could only walk around in a small part of the beach and I could not even walk to the remaining archway. The weather was dramatic and the ocean was roaring. The whole experience was totally out of this world. Nonetheless, I had a whale of a time. In any case, it’s important to check the weather forecast and the water level to know what to expect.

Legzira Beach Morocco

Top Tips for Legzira Beach

Where to Stay –  There are hotels and guesthouses along Legzira Beach.  For a more authentic experience, I highly recommend a sojourn in Mirleft. Mirleft is a lovely village 21 km from Legzira Beach with very kind locals and friendly children. I was so in love with Mirleft and the people there.

Seeking Adventure? – One of the unusual things that you can do if you are an adventure seeker and you love discovering thrilling landscape views is cycling between Mirleft and Lagzira Beach. It’s not an easy ride because the road is full of ups and downs but the view will make it up for all the sweat.

Taghazout

Taghazout, one of the best places to visit in Morocco

The colourful fishing village of Taghazout

Taghazout is a relaxed, hippy surf town on Morocco’s beautiful Atlantic Coast. Lying between Essaouira and Agadir, Taghazout is easy to get to and therefore makes for an ideal place to include on a trip to Morocco.

If you’re into surfing or yoga, then Taghazout is the perfect place to visit, as these are the two main activities to enjoy. Surfing is at the heart of Taghazout, but yoga and wellness retreats are becoming increasingly popular here too.

Whether you’re an experienced surfer, or keen to learn, there’s a beach for you. There are dozens of surf schools to pick from. For beginners, you’ll learn at the main beach in the heart of town, but for more experienced riders, they’ll take you by minibus to other beautiful spots along the coastline to find waves and breaks to suit you. They call this a ‘surfari’ and can be full day adventures with various stops. With long, sunny warm days year-round, Taghazout is a wonderful place to surf.

Top Tips for Taghazout

  • Away from the ocean, visitors can explore the local area. The town itself is charming, consisting of small colourful  laneways with some excellent cafes and cute stores to wander in.
  • My favourite place to visit is Paradise Valley, a collection of turquoise pools surrounded by huge boulders and lush vegetation. It’s an oasis in the heart of the desert and you can travel there in less than an hour from Taghazout. It’s the perfect contrast to the sandy beaches, but I advise to go early in the morning as it gets really busy as the day goes on!

Ait-Ben-Haddou is one of those places that just blows you away and it easily ranks as one of the best places I have seen in the world. I’m certainly not writing this to tell you to avoid this amazing and exotic destination.

I instead want to encourage you to consider other options for visiting that will allow you to fully appreciate and enjoy this world class destination. It is absolutely one of the best places to visit in Morocco and deserves a spot on everyone’s itinerary!

Ait-Ben-Haddou

The fortified town of Ait-Ben-Haddou at sunrise

Why You Shouldn’t Day Trip From Marrakech to Ait-Ben-Haddou

A day trip from Marrakech to Ait-Ben-Haddou involves crossing the Atlas Mountains twice, which makes for a rather long and uncomfortable journey of at least 4 hours each way.

You will essentially spend an entire day on a bus just to jump out for a couple of hours in the heat of day, along with many other buses full of tourists!

Luckily for you there are a number of other options to extend your visit; this will allow you not only to avoid the crowds, but also to take advantage of the simply breath-taking sunrises and sunsets at this picture perfect desert fortress.

A day trip from Marrakech to Ait-Ben-Haddou is tempting due to the convenience and beautiful pictures in the brochures. You need to ask yourself however, would you prefer convenience at the risk of disappointment, or a guaranteed once in a lifetime experience?

There are several amazing guest-houses on site with great views of Ait-Ben-Haddou and which also offer an excellent retreat from the relentless bustle of Marrakech. You can bask in the peace of the desert before waking up to surreal views like below! You will find our top picks for accommodation at the bottom of the article.

Check out the following options for some ideas of how you can see Ait-Ben-Haddou without booking a day trip from Marrakech.

4 Alternative Ways to Visit Ait-Ben-Haddou From Marrakech

Option One: Self Drive

This is the option we chose as it allowed us to easily include several other desert stops on our 10-day Morocco itinerary. I’m not going to lie, I had some apprehensions about driving in Marrakech, however we chose a rental place near a main road exiting the city and the drive was far easier than expected. We always use this search tool to book our car rental in Marrakech as it is an easy and hassle-free experience.

Having a car also made crossing the mountains an amazing experience as we were able to stop for photos wherever we wanted. No day trip from Marrakech will offer that kind of flexibility!

If you’re not keen on crossing the mountains twice (like us) then you can drive one way and drop the car off in Ouarzazate.

Morocco road trip

Road-tripping the Moroccan desert

Ouarzazate actually has an international airport servicing many different countries and housing several rental car companies drop off points.

If you have the time then you can also visit the beautiful dunes of Merzouga, the impressive gorges of Dades or Todra or you can continue on through the desert to Fes or Agadir.

Option Two: Bus

Morocco has a number of private bus companies that offer comfortable and quality journeys all over the country. We found that the easiest one for tourists to access was CTM, however Supratours is also a good option.

You can book either one way or return tickets at the office in Marrakech. This saves you the hassle of renting a car and driving whilst still giving you the choice of how long you wish to spend at Ait-Ben-Haddou. It’s also a significantly cheaper option than a day trip from Marrakech.

Ait-Ben-Haddou sunrise

A majestic sunrise at Ait-Ben-Haddou

The bus will drop you off and pick you up right in the middle of town and it’s only a few minutes’ walk to all of the main guest houses. Both the Supratours and CTM offices are just a 15 minute walk from the northern end of the medina in Marrakech or a short 5min taxi ride.

Enter ‘CTM babdokala or Supratours S.A.R.L’. into google maps to locate the respective ticket offices. You unfortunately aren’t able to book tickets in advance online without a Moroccan bank card but if you really want them arranged in advance there are a couple of options.

Ait-Ben-Haddou musician

A local adding some ambiance near the top of town

Many guest houses will book tickets on your behalf if you are spending a few days with them or for an extra fee there are websites that offer the same service. It is honestly quite simple to book them when you arrive however and you can then avoid the premium attached.

Option Three: Fly into Ouarzazate

I honestly didn’t realize this was an option until we were looking for the cheapest airfare back to England and Ouarzazate airport came up!

This city is only about a 20 minute drive from Ait-Ben-Haddou and you should be able to negotiate a fairly cheap taxi fare or a pickup by your accommodation host.

Ait-Ben-Haddou tea house

Tea-house near the top of town

You can get return flights from Marrakech or other cities in Morocco for reasonable prices. Alternatively you can look to start or end your trip here, meaning you only have to cross the mountains once and can spend a couple of days taking it in.

Ouarzazate is also a great jumping off point for explorations further afield into the desert if that takes your fancy. I’ve always found that the best sites to see in countries tend to be outside of the popular cities.

Option Four: Book a tour with an overnight stop

From Marrakech: 2-Day Trek to Ait-Ben-Haddou and Ouarzazate

If tours are your thing or you don’t fancy tackling the Atlas Mountains alone then check out this option. Visiting Ait-Ben-Haddou on a tour doesn’t have to be limited to a day trip from Marrakech, this tour offers an overnight stay in town so you get to enjoy at least one sunset and sunrise.

On this 2-day tour from Marrakech you will also visit two other amazing Kasbahs and experience a little of the Berber way of life. We unfortunately didn’t make it there but the film studio located at Taourirt Kasbah looks especially cool!

The Best Day Trip to Ait-Ben-Haddou

Unfortunately holiday time is often limited. If the choice is between a day trip and not seeing this amazing site then you should definitely go ahead and book one.

If you are limited to a day trip to Ait-Ben-Haddou then this is the one you want to book. After pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech you will head into the Atlas Mountains.

There is a stop for admiring the views at the highest mountain pass. After descending the other side you will visit the Atlas Film Studios which have many sets you will recognise from various films and TV shows.

The next stop is for lunch which unfortunately is not included however it is in a great restaurant. The stunning fortress is next on the list. You will have time to walk through the fortress and take in the views before returning to Marrakech.

Where to Stay in Ait-Ben-Haddou

Chez Brahim

Our top pick is where we stayed while on our epic 10-day adventure through Morocco. This was purely chosen based on its location on google maps which suggested great views of the fortress. As you can see from the photos above we lucked out and had an amazing stay!

The rooms themselves are fairly basic but the views more than make up for anything they might lack. Be aware that there are only a couple of rooms offering the views above. Make sure you select the room with a view.

Chez Brahim Rooftop Ait-Ben-Haddou

Amazing view from the rooftop at Chez Brahim

They have a restaurant onsite which offers a three course menu each night for a fixed and very reasonable price. Breakfast is also included and can be enjoyed on the roof along with the amazing scenery.

If you want a little more luxury or hotels are more your thing then the options below are also in a good location offering views and easy access to the fortress.

Dar Mouna La Source

This place is almost next-door to Chez Brahim and also has some great views from certain rooms and from the rooftop. They offer a pool to cool down after that solid hike up to the top of the fortress!

As above, a free breakfast is included as well as a great Berber style dining room where you can have dinner.

Hotel La Kasbah

Whilst not really a traditional hotel in the western sense of the term, this place does offer air-conditioned rooms and private bathrooms. The rooms are still fairly basic but are housed in a really cool looking building with great decorations on the inside.

You can take your meals here and there is a large swimming pool with great views that you could easily spend a day lounging beside!

When planning your trip to Morocco, the small town of Chefchaouen is a gem that deserves a spot on anyone’s Morocco itinerary. ‘The blue city’ sits high up in the Rif Mountains, surrounded by stunning green valleys that contrast beautifully with the vibrant blue of the town’s buildings. It’s a magical little town of mysterious blue alleys, cute fluffy kittens, laid-back vibes and the friendliest locals!

While it may be only small, there are plenty of fun things to do in Chefchaouen that you shouldn’t miss out on during your stay! I’ve created this complete Chefchaouen guide to help you plan out every detail of your time spent in this amazing town, including the best things to do, the best places to stay, and where you can find a glass of wine or beer in an otherwise alcohol free place.

Thanks to social media platforms like Instagram, Chefchaouen has become an increasingly popular destination due to its extremely photogenic nature. Once you travel to Chefchaouen, you will quickly see that it really is a photographer’s paradise. Truly one of the most unique and enchanting places we have ever visited, ‘the blue pearl’ is guaranteed to be a highlight of your time spent in Morocco!

Top 10 Best Things to do in Chefchaouen

Things to do in Chefchaouen

Get Lost in the Chefchaouen Medina

The Chefchaouen medina is an endless maze of narrow winding alleys that lead you to hidden corners and cute little spots around the town. Just spend a few hours exploring at your own pace, getting lost is all part of the fun. You will stumble on stunning doorways, alleys decorated with colourful plant pots, and many many cats.

The streets of Chefchaouen are filled with the cutest cats and kittens you’ve ever seen. As tempting as it may be to pick one up and give it a cuddle, it’s best to avoid touching them as there have been reports of rabies infections in tourists over the years. Just admire them from afar and take as many photos as you like!

As we were eating breakfast one morning, a friendly neighborhood cat was hanging around our table. He eventually hopped up and sneezed all over my plate of food!😂Luckily one of the restaurant staff saw it happen and offered to replace my meal at no extra charge.

Shop for Souvenirs

One of the most popular things to do in Chefchaouen is taking some time to browse the many colourful little shops. Shopping for souvenirs in Chefchaouen isn’t as cheap as you may expect but it’s a much more enjoyable experience than places like Marrakech, as you don’t get nearly as much hassle from the shop vendors.

Chefchaouen is known for its beautiful traditional hand-made goods such as colourful carpets, Moroccan lamps, jewellery, caftans, woven baskets, and so much more. If you’re going to buy any souvenirs or gifts for friends in Morocco, you really can’t go wrong with getting them in Chefchaouen!

Tips for shopping in Chefchaouen:

  • Always shop with cash, most stores don’t accept credit card payments.
  • Haggling is part of the shopping experience in Morocco. The shop vendors will initially tell you a much higher price than an item is worth, never settle with that. Offer them about half of their asking price and then you will go back and forth until you settle on an agreed price.
  • If you’re looking for something in particular, check out a few different shops before settling on one so that you can gauge what the average price will be for a given item.
  • If you aren’t getting anywhere with the haggling process, don’t be afraid to pretend to walk away. The vendor will often call you back to try and continue the haggling process. This way he will be more likely to lower his price so he can make a sale.

Kasbah Museum

In the Place Outa El Hammam (main square) of the old city you’ll find the 15th century Kasbah, it’s right next to the Grand Mosque. Inside the Kasbah is a lovely courtyard with a beautiful garden as well as the Kasbah museum. The small museum has some historic artifacts on display as well as some artwork but there is a lack of English.

The main highlight of visiting the Kasbah is climbing up the towers to get a fantastic panoramic view of Chefchaouen’s rooftops and surrounding countryside. To be completely honest, we chose not to go inside. The reviews we heard from other travellers were that it’s overpriced for what you see, especially if you only speak English.

Chefchaouen Kasbah

If you want to check out the garden and climb up the tower for the views then go for it. But if you’re expecting a well put together museum with English labels then maybe give it a miss. We enjoyed having lunch at the restaurants in the square in front of the Kasbah, admiring the view of the building from there.

Enjoy the Scenic Views from the Spanish Mosque

One of the top things to do in Chefchaouen is without a doubt taking a short hike up to the Spanish Mosque that sits on a hilltop overlooking the town below. This is a particularly nice thing to do in the evening when the town is lit up in that perfect sunset glow!

The trail to the Spanish Mosque begins at the the east end of the town. You will pass a few cafes, cross over a little bridge and then begin the uphill walk toward the mosque. The entire walk takes about 30 mins and is very scenic along the way.

Stunning views of Chefchaouen from the Spanish Mosque

Stunning views of Chefchaouen from the Spanish Mosque

Once you reach the top, the breath taking views from the mosque will reward you. The Spanish Mosque was built in the 1920s but is no longer in use today. Watching the sunset from the mosque is the perfect way to finish off a long day of sightseeing.

Dine at a Rooftop Restaurant

Enjoy a traditional Moroccan tagine from a rooftop restaurant. There are a number of highly rated restaurants which boast beautiful views from their rooftop terraces. We tried a few of them and here are the ones we can recommend based on good food, reasonable prices and of course epic views!

Cafe Clock Chefchaouen – We had dinner at this lovely place one evening, the food was delicious, the views were awesome and there was also live music. It’s about a 5 minute walk from the main square, away from most of the other restaurants and shops. It’s a big restaurant with multiple levels but make sure to ask to be seated on their rooftop terrace!

Chefchaouen rooftop views

Aladdin Restaurant – Coming in as one of the top picks for places to dine in Chefchaouen, the Aladdin restaurant is centrally located near the Kasbah in the big square. The views over Chefchaouen from their rooftop dining terrace really are awesome as it’s one of the highest buildings in the area!

The only downside is that the reviews on TripAdvisor seem to be hit or miss. Some people stating that service wasn’t great or that the food wasn’t amazing. In our experience, the food was decent and the service was fine. It’s worthwhile to have one meal there just to experience the epic views!

Hamsa – Delicious homemade food, great views and good reviews! You can’t go wrong with choosing to have lunch or dinner at Hamsa. Located in the main square near the Grand Mosque, this place serves plenty of western dishes including wraps, vegetarian meals, gluten free options and more.

Of course, traditional Moroccan cuisine is on the menu too, if that’s what you’re craving. The prices are slightly higher at this place compared to others in Chefchaouen but the food is good, it’s clean, and there is an awesome view from their rooftop terrace!

Find the Best Photography Locations in Chefchaouen

What was once a sleepy little mountain village has seen a huge increase in visitors in recent years. This all comes down to the internet and more specifically social media platforms like Instagram which have certainly put Chefchaouen on the map.

Even if you’re not into social media, the blue pearl of Morocco is truly a magical place for anyone who has an interest in photography. There is no shortage of pretty little corners and picturesque spots around Chefchaouen and you really don’t have to go far to find them.

Strolling through the blue streets of Chefchaouen

My favourite thing to do in Chefchaouen was getting lost in the backstreets!

Simply walking around the town will lead you to all sorts of fascinating doors and colourful scenes. If you’re looking for the absolute “must-see” photography spots in Chefchaouen, here are the ones you don’t want to miss! Be warned though, don’t be surprised if you have to queue up to take some of these shots.

The Paid Set – Perhaps one of the most well-known photos of Chefchaouen is this perfect little garden scene, set up with a table, a tea pot and plenty of pretty plants. This is actually the front of someone’s home, it is well kept and costs only 5 Dirhams (50 cents USD) per person to take photos there.

Queue up and then spend as long as you like until you get the perfect shot. This person clearly had a brilliant business idea when they thought this one up! Click here for exact location of the paid set.

Taking photos is one of the best things to do in Chefchaouen

The Steps with Colourful Pots – Another one of the most popular photography spots in Chefchaouen, this one draws the crowds. We showed up at around 8am to try and get these steps to ourselves and there was already a small crowd of keen photographers setting up their tripods even at this time of day!

This one is hard to miss, you’ll definitely find it while you’re out and about exploring the town. It’s located on the one of the main streets that runs through Chefchaouen. Click here for exact location.

The famous steps of Chefchaouen

The Beautiful Door Scene – Not too far from the previous location (it’s only a few steps away on the same street) is one of my favourite scenes of Chefchaouen. A beautifully decorated blue door, with more colourful potted plants and a narrow alley of steps leading up to more dreamy scenes. I just love this little town!

This town is so beautiful it felt like a dream world!

The Tall House With the Cute Staircase – Another unique and picture-perfect scene of Chefchaouen is this really tall and skinny house with a gorgeous staircase filled with plants. It’s a lesser known photography spot but it’s important to keep in mind that this is actually someone’s home. Just because people on Instagram have taken photos here posing on the steps, it doesn’t make it ok to intrude.

I first saw a photo of this place when one of my favourite Instagrammers shared some photos of her sitting on the steps. I fell in love with that scene and knew I just had to check it out. Once we arrived, we notice a gate had been placed there, deterring any keen Instagrammers from posing on their private property.

This is totally understandable and I would never encourage people to hop over the gate (note, there was clearly no gate yet when Nathalie Wanders was there). Just do as we did, admire the pretty scene, take some photos and continue on your way. To find this spot, head to Hotel Nisrine and you’ll see it right in front of the hotel.

The Many Blue Doors – Each door in Chefchaouen is unique and beautiful in its own way. The good news is that there are hundreds of them and if you’re into door photography, this is your place! You could spend hours walking around taking endless photos of doors in this town.

Unfortunately I have no idea of the exact location of the door in the photo below, but you’re pretty much guaranteed to find one just like it on your explorations around the town!

Admire the beautiful doors of Chefchaouen

Everywhere in Chefchaouen – The truth is, the entire town is packed full of hidden gems. There are probably hundreds more photography spots in Chefchaouen that we didn’t even discover on our visit. The more time you spend exploring, the more magic you will find! Even this little alley with its archway is extremely photogenic.

Hiking in the Rif Mountains

There are endless opportunities for scenic hikes and walks in the Rif Mountains that surround Chefchaouen. There are multi-day hikes or shorter hikes that can easily be done on a day trip. If you only have a few days to spend in Chefchaouen, the one that I will recommend to you is hiking to Akchour Falls.

The start of the hike begins in Akchour village which is a 45 minute drive from Chefchaouen. The cheapest way to get there is to take a shared taxi which is referred to as a Grand Taxi. These taxis will take 4-6 people and only leave once they have filled up. The other option is to take a private taxi which will obviously come at a higher cost.

Akchour Falls - Chefchaouen, Morocco

Akchour Falls

Just outside of the medina you will find the taxi stand (any local will point you in the direction if you ask them), once you arrive just mention that you want to go to Akchour Falls and someone will show you where to find the shared taxis. Grand taxis will cost about 25 Dirhams per person where a private taxi starts at around 200 Dirhams.

The hike to the big falls takes about 2 hours total, one way depending on how many times you stop. The hike itself is not very challenging and the trail is easy to follow so don’t worry about getting lost. The scenery is beautiful along the way with plenty of smaller waterfalls and rock pools which are great for swimming in.

Things to bring on your hike to Akchour Falls:

  • Bring some cash with you, not only for the return trip back to Chefchaouen but so that you can buy food and drinks at the little stalls on the trail along the hike
  • Warmer layers like a rain jacket, the mountain weather tends to be unpredictable and it can rain unexpectedly.
  • Swimming suit and towel so that you can swim in the pools along the hike
  • Toilet paper and hand sanitizer
  • Comfortable walking shoes, you don’t necessarily need hiking boots but it doesn’t hurt to wear them if you have them!

There are plenty of other trails around this area for those who are keen hikers. Hiking in the Rif Mountains is a great way to take a break from the bustle of the busy Moroccan cities and relax in the peaceful mountain scenery.

Hiking to Akchour Falls makes an excellent day trip from Chefchaouen for those who have limited time but still want to get some exercise in while surrounded by beautiful nature.

Grab a Drink at Hotel Parador

In a country where alcohol is a rare find, one might wonder: is there anywhere to go for a drink in Chefchaouen? You’ll be happy to know that the answer is yes!

Hotel Parador is the perfect place to pop in for a mid-day or evening drink. There is a lovely outdoor patio at the back of the hotel where they serve selected drinks from a menu. The good news is that you don’t have to be a guest to be served there.

The other bonus of this place is the beautiful landscape views that you’ll see as you sip your beverage on the patio while soaking up some sun. Stopping at Hotel Parador for a beer was one of Rick’s favourite things to do in Chefchaouen, so I figured it deserves a place on this list!

Check out the Chefchaouen Souks

Every week on Mondays and Thursdays, colourful market stalls are set up just outside of the medina. Farmers come to sell their fresh produce for good prices. You can pick from a huge range of fruits and veggies. You will also see ladies dressed in their traditional clothing selling handicrafts, leather goods and more.

Take in the sights, smells and scenes as you explore the local markets. You can even pick up some lunch at one of the sandwich or hot chip stalls. Walking through the souks is a fascinating, culturally rich experience and it’s one of those things you must do when visiting Morocco!

How to get to Chefchaouen

Getting to Chefchaouen is most commonly done from either Fes or Tangier, as they are the closest cities to travel from. Since Chefchaouen is located in the mountains, there is no train line that runs there and it can only be reached by road.

There are two ways to travel to Chefchaouen besides renting a car and driving there yourself. The first is taking the bus which is pretty straight forward and overall a comfortable journey. The other option is to book a private transfer which will cost more but may be worth doing it if you’re travelling in a group.

The top 10 things to do in Chefchaouen

Fes to Chefchaouen

We took the route from Fes to Chefchaouen via the CTM bus service. The bus departs Fes several times throughout the day but bear in mind that during busy months, they tend to fill up quickly.

We showed up early at the bus station hoping to get on the morning bus but to our dismay, it was already booked so we had to wait 4+ hours for the next one! The route passes through windy mountain roads and took longer than advertised. The total journey was definitely closer to 5 hours.

Hiking up to the Spanish Mosque

Hiking up to the Spanish Mosque

I would recommend either buying your tickets online (this needs to be done 3 days prior to departure) or heading to the bus station when you first arrive in Fes to book your bus ticket. This will ensure you get a seat on the bus for the date and time that you want.

It’s important to note that the CTM bus station in Fes is actually not near the old medina, where you will likely be staying. You’ll need to catch a taxi to get there which takes around 15 minutes.

Journey time: 4-5 hours

Ticket: 80 DH

If you don’t want to take the bus, book a private transfer from Fes to Chefchaouen.

Tangier to Chefchaouen

When we departed Chefchaouen, we took the same bus service to Tangier. If you are travelling in the opposite direction, from Tangier to Chefchaouen, you’ll want to book your ticket a few days in advance.

This is a very popular route for both locals and tourists and unfortunately there is only one departure per day which is at 12:15pm. To buy your tickets, head to the main bus station ‘Gare Routiere‘ in Tangier city centre.

The CTM bus station where the bus actually departs from is over 5km from the city centre, so you’ll need to catch a taxi. Otherwise there is a free shuttle that runs from Gare Routiere station to the CTM bus station.

Journey time: 3 hours

There are few places that evoke the same exotic imagery and sense of adventure as the nation of Morocco. A tantalising blend of Middle Eastern, Spanish and African influences meld together to form a culture as unique as the landscape it inhabits.

Everywhere you go you are greeted by almost fantastical scenes; ancient mud fortresses, towering snow-capped mountains rising from the barren desert, cities painted completely in blue and bustling outdoor markets filled with snake charmers, colourful spices and magical lamps to name just a few.

The hardest part of visiting Morocco is trying to fit in as much as possible with limited time. There is truly so much to see here it would take months to do it all, but if you only have a limited time then consider this 10 day Morocco itinerary which takes in some of the top highlights whilst being easy on the budget!

The Ultimate 10 Day Morocco Itinerary

This 10 day Morocco itinerary will start by taking you from the ancient city of Fes, up into the verdant northern Rif Mountains to the beautiful blue city of Chefchaouen. From here it’s a transit through Tangier to get the fast train on to Marrakech to sample the famous markets and bustling medina.

The highlight for us was then crossing the Atlas Mountains in a rental car to visit the majestic fortress of Ait-Ben-Haddou and onwards into the desert to witness the mind-blowing grandeur of the Todra Gorge.

To end the trip, you can fly out of Ouarzazate or head back to Marrakech. This last part can also be done by taking a multi-day desert tour from Marrakech if you aren’t comfortable driving yourself.

Best Time to Visit Morocco

Morocco can get scorching hot in summer so it may be best to avoid travel in this season. The bumper seasons are best with Autumn and Spring being most commonly recommended. We decided to travel to Morocco in May, the weather was perfect and comfortable for the duration of our trip.

Autumn is from September to October and has sunny weather and little rain. Spring is from April to May and also sunny with a chance of small amounts of rain. You can also still travel in winter as it is mostly sunny with very little rain however it can get cold in the desert and the mountains.

How to Plan The Perfect 10 Day Morocco Itinerary

Gorgeous details of the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech

Gorgeous details of the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech

Fes

We flew into Fes and spent the first two nights here to get accustomed to Morocco and to ensure we had enough time to have a proper look around the fascinating old city.

Fes was founded in 789 and is now the second largest city in Morocco. The old medina is a UNESCO world heritage site and a massive pedestrian only zone, something you will really appreciate once you experience Marrakech!

To be honest we flew into Fes because the flights were cheap but we ended up really enjoying our time there and could have spent longer. The old tannery is certainly one of the highlights of Morocco and a great place to buy some leather goods!

Highlights of Fes

The Old Medina Quarters (Fes el Bali & Fes Jdid)

Fes is a big city but the old medina is where you will be spending your time. There are 2 medina quarters which are alongside each other and house most of the attractions you will wish to see. One of the highlights of Fes is simply exploring all of the winding streets and alleys, perusing the shops and enjoying the cafes.

Chouara Tannery

Dating back to the 11th century, this is one of the oldest tanneries in the world and a sight you are sure to have seen pictures of. It is in the heart of Fes el Bali and as such it is the busiest of the 3 tanneries of Fes.

The tannery is completely surrounded by leather stores, some of which offer their rooftops as viewing platforms. There is usually no charge for this and the shop attendants were very polite to us, all they ask is that you listen to a short talk on their shop and have a look around.

10 day Morocco itinerary

A leather shop at the Chouara Tannery

We bought something cheap each as we felt it fair after spending a lot of time and getting some great photos from their roof but perhaps don’t make any major purchases from these stores as the prices are inflated.

After reading about other travellers’ stories on the internet prior to visiting, one might expect to find aggressive salesmen who won’t let you leave their shops without buying something first. Although we didn’t have this negative experience, it is entirely possible that it happens from time to time, depending on the shop you choose to enter.

As you enter one of the shops, you will be given a sprig of mint to hold onto before you’re taken up to the platform. During the summer months, the smell from the tannery can be quite pungent however when we visited in May, we didn’t find this to be an issue at all.

Chouara Tannery - Fez Morocco

Chouara Tannery

Bou Inania Madrassa

Founded in the 14th century, this building is a beautiful example of Marinid architecture. If you want to see an example of the impressive architecture and art of a building like the Alhambra with a fraction of the crowds then it’s worth a visit. For a small fee it is open to the public.

Jardin Jnan Sbil

A large and tranquil inner city garden, take a break from the shopping and sightseeing with a stroll through the garden before finishing up at ‘Mezzanine’, a nearby bar where you can take advantage of their rooftop terrace and one of the few opportunities you will have to enjoy a cold beer or glass of wine in Morocco!

Royal Palace of Fes

Located in Fes Jdid, this palace is still frequently used by the King of Morocco meaning it is unfortunately not open to the public. The beautifully designed front entrance and gates are worth a look however and aren’t very busy so can make for some great photos.

Where to Stay in Fes

One of the highlights of Morocco is staying the beautifully decorated traditional riads and guesthouses. You can stay in some great places on a budget in Morocco but it is worth a splurge here and there to experience some of the more impressive riads. The ones we have selected are based on high ratings, a great location and beautiful interiors.

Budget – Dar Mfaddel

Clean and beautifully decorated, the price is right at this guesthouse. Whilst the rooms are a little on the small side, you won’t be spending a lot of time in there. There is so much to do in Fes and back in the guesthouse you will find yourself drinking mint tea in the beautiful common areas most of the time.

A typical design of a riad in Morocco

A typical design of a riad in Morocco – a pool surrounded by plants in the center of a large, tastefully decorated courtyard

Mid-Range – Dar Anne

A super colourful place with great rooms for the price and an outdoor balcony where you can enjoy your tea with a view of the old medina. This place is in a great location and offers breakfast so you can get on the go straight out the door.

Riad Amor – Suite & Spa

I had to squeeze in another option which sits just between the mid and upper range. Beautiful big rooms and bathrooms provide and oasis from the bust market streets. You can also relax with a pool and spa service.

Splurge – Dar Borj

Boasting a balcony with some of the best views of the city and some architecture worthy of a museum, coming back to this guesthouse will feel like the sightseeing is continuing. To be fair it might be a bit early in the trip for a splurge but if you’ve got the money then might as well experience the best!

Backstreets of Fez, Morocco

Vibrant alleys of the Fes medina

Chefchaouen

A photographer’s paradise of blue buildings and winding alleyways with a surprise around every corner, the ‘blue city’ of Chefchaouen is sure to be a highlight of this 10 day Morocco itinerary!

Nestled in the northern Rif mountains, the surrounding landscape is just as beautiful as the town itself, with the verdant green valleys contrasting spectacularly with the blue buildings. The town centre has a laid back vibe and it is so easy to spend a day just slowly wandering the streets and exploring all the alleyways and shops.

You can find many locally made crafts and unique products here if shopping is your thing and if you are a fan of photography then the opportunities are endless.

The beautiful streets of Chefchaouen Morocco

Getting from Fes to Chefchaouen

The easiest way to get to Chefchaouen from Fes is via the local bus service. The company is called CTM and a ticket will set you back less than $10 USD. Unfortunately unless you have a Moroccan bank card you are not able to purchase tickets in advance however there are many departures per day and tickets can be purchased easily from the station in Fes.

We would recommend doing this as soon as possible, in the busy period the buses fill up quickly and it’s best to try and get a reasonably early bus. Some guesthouses can also arrange tickets for you prior to arrival if you have booked a room with them, often for only a small fee, it could be worth e-mailing in advance to save yourself the hassle.

Visiting Chefchaouen is a highlight of this 10 day Morocco Itinerary

Highlights of Chefchaouen

Wandering the streets of the medina

One of the best things to do in Chefchaouen is simply to wander all the little streets and alleyways, perusing shops and finding great little photo ops along the way. Don’t forget to stop at some of the cafes offering rooftop dining with beautiful views over the town and valleys.

The Spanish Mosque

At the far end of town you can find the trail head that leads up along the side of a mountain and deposits you on a ridge-line adjacent to town. At the top of this ridge is a small and unused mosque. This however isn’t the attraction, it’s the magnificent views back over the town and countryside that you’re after! This spot shouldn’t be missed.

A beautiful view overlooking the town of Chefchaouen, Morocco

Perfect views over Chefchaouen from the trail on the way up to the Spanish Mosque

Talassemtane National Park

If you’re into some hiking then you can find some trails starting from town and heading into this national park. It can be steep in areas but is considered a moderate trail. Bring a picnic and enjoy waterfalls and sweeping mountain views. Check out the maps.me app to find the location of the trails.

Have lunch in front of the Kasbah

In the middle of town you will find the old Kasbah. We didn’t go in as it was quite expensive and supposedly there isn’t much to see. Opposite the Kasbah however are a number of simple restaurants which are great for a cheap lunch or breakfast where you can relax and take in the view of the building with mountains in the background.

Have a beer at Hotel Parador

This was my personal highlight! Just kidding, but after a long day of sightseeing it was great to find this place which has a balcony overlooking beautiful mountain and valley views. They serve ice cold beer and cocktails and you don’t have to be a guest so pull up chair and enjoy the sunset views!

Where to Stay in Chefchaouen

Budget – Usha Guest House

Situated on the more quiet river end of town, the best feature of this guest house is the beautiful balcony. Relax in a hammock while you take in mountain views then retire to room that are more than adequate for the price.

Mid-Range – Casa Sabila

This guesthouse is also situated down the quiet, and arguably prettier, area of town. There is some really interesting design throughout with spacious rooms and a brilliant view from the balcony. A great jumping off point for hikes into the surrounding mountains. If you book here ask the guesthouse to arrange a taxi from the bus station.

Splurge – Dar Elrio

If air-con and bathrobes are your thing then check out this highly rated guest house. An easy walk from the centre of the old town, you won’t have to leave again after coming back and cleaning up in the evening as you can enjoy the great rooftop restaurant on-site. The rooms are also beautifully decorated and have some great views out of the windows.

Tangier

Located just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain, Tangier has a very colourful and busy history. Romanticised by the writers of the beat generation and with a reputation as an expat haunt, Tangier has a number of cafes and other locations of literary interest, if that is your thing.

There isn’t however too much of interest to the average tourist in Tangier and we chose to spend as little time as possible here, using it mainly as a transfer point to catch a train to Marrakech.

There are a few interesting sites scattered about the old town. You can see most of them in a couple hours walk and to be honest we found the town to be a bit run down and not particularly appealing. However, if you do have some time to spare, below are some of the best things to do in Tangier.

10 day Morocco itinerary

Wandering the busy streets of Tangier

Highlights of Tangier

Kasbah Museum

Located inside the building that was once the sultan’s palace, this museum showcases the history of this region of Morocco. Inside, you’ll see plenty fascinating displays, a number of courtyards and beautiful gardens. The Kasbah Museum is definitely worth a visit.

Medina

Explore the infinite maze of narrow alleys around the old town and enjoy the fact that you can wander peacefully through the streets without being bothered by shop keepers (as opposed to other cities in Morocco ie. Marrakech)

Restaurant Ahlen

Make sure to stop at this gem of a restaurant for a meal while you’re visiting Tangier. Not only is does it hold #1 status on TripAdvisor,  it is probably the best food we had in Morocco. You can expect delicious traditional Moroccan cuisine, large portions, and friendly service.

A beautiful mosque in Tangier, Morocco

A beautiful mosque in Tangier

Getting to Marrakech from Chefchaouen via Tangier

You will use the same bus service to get to Tangier and thankfully it’s a shorter and less mountainous trip! There is a small CTM ticket window just outside of the old town in Chefchaouen.

Alternatively if you are an expert planner and know exactly when you want to leave you could buy your ticket to Tangier in advance when you get your Chefchaouen ticket in Fes.

The train company in Morocco is called ONCF, you are supposedly able to buy tickets online but we struggled with this. The station however is close to where the bus drops you off so you can either walk or get a taxi to buy your tickets.

We were not able to leave the same day and so spent a night in Tangier but if you are able to get tickets and leave earlier you may choose to spend the extra night elsewhere on the trip.

A spice market in Morocco

Where to Stay in Tangier

You’re really just looking for somewhere to rest your head, ideally close to the train and bus station. We stayed in the old city so we could have a quick look around but there is no vehicle access so it was actually a bit of a pain getting to and from our hotel.

Hotel Maram

If you just want a cheap place to spend the night in the old town then have a look at Hotel Maram. We stayed here and found it to be perfectly fine and actually pretty good value. There are a lot of restaurants nearby and it’s a short walk to the few sites of interest around town.

Hilton Garden Inn Tanger City Centre

If you just want to stay near the train station and don’t mind forking out a bit more, then why not enjoy some western style comfort for a night and book the Hilton Garden Inn. Use the time to refresh and unwind before the train journey and crazy streets of Marrakech.

Streets of Marrakech

A typical Marrakech scene

Marrakech

The bustling, hectic and unique capital of Morocco; if you have been imagining the scene of snake charmers surrounded by colourful markets full of exotic goods, smells and foods then this is the place.

The ancient medina is a huge walled area of winding little alleyways full of traditional souks selling all manner of goods and foods. It is a car free area but unfortunately still allows scooters and motorcycles, which you will find yourself repeatedly dodging.

There is plenty to see and do in Marrakech and tourist numbers are high. We spent two nights here, accepting that we wouldn’t see everything but allowing ourselves more time to enjoy the road trip to follow. If you enjoy cities or have longer to spend on your trip then you could certainly consider an extra night here.

Sunset over the busy Jemaâ El Fna Market

Sunset over the busy Jemaâ El Fna Market

Highlights of Marrakech

Jemaâ El Fna Market

The biggest souk in Morocco and a truly interesting and exotic experience. Set up every evening in a massive square at the heart of the ancient medina, this is the place to be to witness the snake charmers in action and grab yourself some souvenirs.

Just watch your back as there are men who try to place animals (snakes and monkeys etc) on your shoulders and then ask for money. As we were walking through the market, a man came up behind us with a snake in his hand, looking like he was about to throw it at us. Luckily we managed to quickly escape but some people are not so lucky.

Make sure to grab dinner or even just a mint tea at one of the rooftop restaurants overlooking the market, try to book ahead as the best ones get very busy. It’s a great way to take in the atmosphere of the busy square without having to immerse yourself in the madness.

Market scenes at Jemaâ El Fna

Explore the Medina

The medina is full of amazing little shops and some seriously good restaurants. Spend some time wandering the streets and alleys sampling everything the city has to offer. Be aware of the shop keepers around the medina, some of them can be very pushy, rude and very talented scam artists!

If you want to buy something, be prepared to haggle otherwise you will certainly get ripped off as the shop keepers will always try to sell items priced much higher than they are worth. The medina is a maze and you can expect to get lost, but that’s all part of the fun!

The perfect 10 day Morocco itinerary

Koutoubia Mosque

A beautiful 12th century mosque surrounded by plazas, gardens and fountains. This is a great spot to get some photos and to take a break from the busy market. The impressive Koutoubia Mosque is the largest one in all of Marrakech and 5 times per day you will hear the muezzin’s prayer calls echoing throughout the streets.

The mosque itself isn’t open to tourists but its gardens offer a peaceful escape from chaos of the streets.

A couple walks in front of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech

Strolling around the incredible Koutoubia Mosque (photo taken early in the morning before this square became busy with tourists!)

Jardin Majorelle

This garden sits just outside the medina area and consists of 2.5 acres of landscaped gardens and pretty buildings. Consisting mostly of a huge variety of cacti, it is an interesting and tranquil break from the bustling city.

Get in early though as it can get very busy here during peak tourist season. If you leave it until later in the day, be prepared to stand in a long queue. The best way to get there is by catching a taxi which will take about 10 minutes and cost only a few dollars.

You will find a concentration of taxis near Jemaâ El Fna. You can try and negotiate the cost but we found this to be difficult and in hindsight, probably not worth the hassle for such a short ride.

Jardin Majorelle, Marrakech

The gorgeous Jardin Majorelle

Bahia Palace

A massive and well-preserved palace complex on the outskirts of the medina, well worth a visit to take in the beautiful Moroccan style architecture and large gardens. The design of this palace is very similar to that of the Alhambra in Spain with intricately detailed ceilings, impressive tile-work and large courtyards with fountains.

Bahia Palace, Marrakech

Bahia Palace

El Badi Palace

Once a majestic palace of the 16th century, these sprawling ruins are a popular tourist attraction that offer a fascinating insight into the colourful history of Marrakech. In total contrast to the pristine Bahia Palace, the sandstone walls of El Badi are bare and  stripped of their once lavish decorations.

El Badi Palace evokes a sense of mystery and as you stroll through the complex, you’re able to imagine the grandeur of its past. Make sure to climb up onto the ramparts from the courtyard to find a spectacular view of Marrakech below.

Where to Stay in Marrakech

Budget – Riad Syba

You couldn’t get a nicer riad in Marrakech for this price, with a beautiful rooftop terrace with spa where you can sit and relax with some mint tea. The rooms are big, clean and beautifully decorated with large comfortable beds. It’s situated just outside of the medina but that means more bang for your buck.

Mid-Range – Riad & Spa le Secret de Zoraida

This riad has some super cool decoration and design as well as a rooftop spa with views of the Atlas Mountains. Save yourself another foray into the busy streets with the highly rated onsite restaurant.

Splurge – Riad Les Nuits de Marrakech

Live in your own little Bahia Palace in this beautiful example of a Moroccan riad. Located right near the Jamaâ El Fna Market and featuring a pool to soak in after a long day exploring the medina. If there’s one place on this 10 day Morocco itinerary to splurge on some luxury and comfort then Marrakech is probably it.

Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou / Driving Across the Atlas Mountains

This is where the fun really begins! No good Morocco itinerary is complete without a trip into the desert and in our opinion the best way to see anything is by driving yourself.

We hired a car in Marrakech and drove across the Atlas Mountains to Ait-Ben-Haddou. It was a really amazing drive with some great scenery and stops along the way, driving yourself gives you the freedom to stop and take pictures as well as dictating the time you leave and arrive.

We rented a car using this search tool and made sure to choose a car rental office that was near a main road offering an easy exit from the city. Marrakech has some busy roads but we found that leaving early and sticking to main roads meant that the driving was actually much easier than we expected.

How to spend the perfect 10 days in Morocco, the ultimate 10 day itinerary

Of course we had to pull over to say hello to some camels along the drive

Once you are out of the main city area the roads are long and straight and easy to drive. As you begin to enter the mountains the road obviously becomes quite windy and steep in parts. There was a lot of construction going on when we were there and a large part of the trip was on gravel.

We cheaped out and hired a really small car with tiny tires, in hindsight this was a bad idea for crossing the mountains! Spend a bit more and get something a little more comfortable, you won’t regret it.

Driving from Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou

Driving from Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou

As for most road trips potentially outside of mobile coverage, I pre-downloaded the map area on google maps and loaded the route prior to leaving reliable coverage/WiFi. The route selected by google maps was reliable and easy to follow however it will take at least an hour longer than it says.

If you aren’t confident driving yourself or you wish to finish the trip in Marrakech due to more availability of air-routes then you can consider some of the really reasonably priced tours through Get-Your-Guide. See below for a popular tour option or read our post on the best desert tours from Marrakech.

The Best Morocco Desert Tour From Marrakech

For the people who don’t like the idea of driving, this is by far the most popular desert tour that departs from Marrakech, takes you on an epic 3-day adventure through the highlights of the Moroccan desert and then returns you to back to Marrakech.

The tour starts off by taking you to the desert fortress of Ait-Ben-Haddou on the first day. You will enjoy a guided tour of the old town and have some lunch before continuing to Tinghir for the night. The following day will take you to see the spectacular Todra Gorge.

10 Day Morocco Itinerary

The tour then continues to the Merzouga desert where you will have the option to ride camels and enjoy having the true Moroccan desert experience by spending the night at the “Auberge Sahara” desert camp, surrounded by beautiful sand dunes.

Taking this tour is definitely the best option for those looking to finish off this 10 day Morocco itinerary by getting to visit desert without having to hire a car and drive. It’s also great because it allows you to fly home from Marrakech, where it’s easy to find flights from.

Ait-Ben-Haddou

This place was, for me, the crown jewel in Morocco’s many amazing sites. An absolutely stunning desert fortress that truly evokes a sense of adventure and wonder. The fortress is framed in a picture perfect setting next to a river and surrounded by palm trees, benefiting from stunning lighting both at sunrise and sunset.

There are very few things that can get me out of bed before sunrise but this place had me jumping out of the sheets to see it at that magical time. We spent 2 nights here so that we could watch at least 2 sunrises and sunsets. This also gave us time to fully explore the fortress town at our leisure.

You may be tempted by the many tour companies offering day trips here from Marrakech, but one thing is certain: Ait-Ben-Haddou certainly deserves more than just a day trip!

The Ultimate 10 Day Morocco Itinerary

The majestic desert fortress, Ait Ben Haddou

We offer some great accommodation options for most places we visit but here it is especially important to choose the right place, there are only certain places where you can wake up with a view of the fortress out of your window and which offer rooftop balconies also overlooking it.

Check out the options below including the amazing place we stayed in and can highly recommend. It was easily the best place we stayed during our 10 days in Morocco.

10 Day Morocco Itinerary

Highlights of Ait-Ben-Haddou

Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou

The entire UNESCO listed fortified village is like a big open air museum. It is well worth it to spend half a day just walking around and imagining yourself being back in time. There are still locals living inside the walls and they sell some really nice handicrafts. Make it all the way to the top to be rewarded with spectacular views out across the desert and down the river valley.

There is a small museum inside which has purportedly been furnished to look like how people would have lived in the time the fortress was built. I’m not sure of the accuracy but it only cost a pittance and allows you to explore inside one of the towers.

Tea with a view

Salon du Thé Panoramique

Within the Kasbah, somewhere in the top third, you will find this little tea house. It’s right at the junction where you start to ascend the final steep set of stairs up the top so it’s not hard to find. They have an amazing balcony where you can sit and sip mint tea whilst you take in the views, not to mention get some great photos!

The river footbridge at sunrise or sunset

Across the small river running in front of the fortress are a couple of little ramshackle bridges. During the hours of sunrise and sunset you can get some absolutely magical photos with the light reflecting off the water and creating an amazing warm glow on the fortress walls.

Quad Bike Tours

Check out The Desert Wanderer to arrange quad bike tours around Ait-Ben-Haddou and out to Fint Oasis. If you’ve never done a quad tour before then I highly recommend it, especially in the open desert you can have so much fun tearing around and can reach some places not otherwise accessible.

Where to Stay in Ait-Ben-Haddou

I’m going to break with my usual format for recommending accommodation options here because Ait-Ben-Haddou is very small and there are really only a couple of places that you should consider staying in.

The positioning of accommodation options on google maps is incorrect for a lot of them and it is hard to judge from where you will get the best view. Well never fear, if you book either of these two options you’ll get the best views in town as well as a lovely stay.

Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco

The view from our bedroom window at Chez Brahim

Chez Brahim

This is honestly, hand-on-heart, one of the best rooms I have ever stayed in during my years of travelling the world. Make certain to book the ‘double room with view’ as not all the rooms face the fortress. The room itself is very basic but it’s the perfect fortress view that makes it worth it.

I’ll let the photos below do the talking, but on top of the unbeatable view the room was comfortable and they served a 3-course dinner every night for a reasonable price. Breakfast is served on a patio overlooking the village below.

Dar Mouna La Source

Basically next door to Chez Brahim and while not offering quite the same views it is still amazing. You will benefit from the use of a swimming pool for those hot desert days as well as a free breakfast! You can’t go wrong with either of these options for sure.

Driving Across the Desert to Todra Gorge

The best thing about this desert drive is that it isn’t all just empty boring desert. The road you’ll be driving down between Ouarzazate and Boumalne Dades is called the road of a thousand kasbahs!

You will see these unique “mini-castles” dotting the landscape all the way down the road as well as some beautiful oasis’ which erupt like a river of green amidst the barren red desert landscape.

The driving is easy enough, the road is in good condition and other drivers were few and far between. Make sure to slow down around the towns as children tend to get a little close to the road trying to sell roses and rose products from the nearby valley of roses.

The Perfect 10 Day Morocco Itinerary, driving through Morocco

Boumalne Dades makes a good stop for lunch being just over half way to your destination. There are also ATMs here if you have forgotten to bring enough cash, many places in the desert will not accept card or have intermittent service so stock up on enough to get you through.

One of my favourite sites were the valleys filled with palm trees, giving the effect of flowing through like a river. There are some great viewpoints to admire this from as well as the mud constructed towns clinging precariously to the valley walls. You will see these sites as you enter the valley and get closer to your destination.

Todra Gorge

This little known and fairly lightly visited site is simply phenomenal in scale and a really cool sight to see. Photos do not do justice to the incredible height of the walls and the relatively narrow space between them accentuates the sense of scale.

Walking through the gorge you feel like you are hidden away in some almost magical place, the imposing walls leaning in to cocoon you from the rest of the world. It’s the perfect way to finish off this epic 10 day Morocco itinerary!

The spectacular Todra Gorge

Exploring the spectacular Todra Gorge, a huge highlight of this Morocco itinerary!

There are people selling handicrafts in the gorge during the day and there are some restaurants just outside of it. Grab a snack or a coffee and watch the rock climbers scaling the walls, slowly ascending until they become just small specks of colour.

If you stay nearby you can easily get there for both sunrise and sunset, where you can have the place pretty much to yourself. There are actually some great accommodation options in the area and we really regretted that we couldn’t spend more time out in the desert relaxing by the pool with epic valley views.

Be aware that entering Todra Gorge in Google Maps does not give you the correct location. See the map below for the location of the gorge or alternatively navigate to your guesthouse and get directions from there.

Walking the gorge at sunrise

Walking through the narrow gorge at sunrise was a big highlight of our trip. The silence and majesty of the place was awesome and we had it completely to ourselves. The morning light reflecting off the giant walls made for some spectacular photos.

Aventures Verticales Maroc

Fancy hiking up to the top of the canyon to check out the view from above? How about scaling the steep walls on a via ferrata adventure? If you’re the adventurous type then check out this company that can arrange all sorts of adventurous tours in and around the gorge.

Walking through the Todra Gorge

Walking through the gorge, our wide angle lens gives the effect that we are extremely tall😂

Walking the green palm filled valleys

There are a number of walking trails through the green valleys around the gorge, and up into the hills. You can stumble onto and follow a number of these yourself however if you want to find the best ones then ask at your guesthouse about organising a local guide.

Hanging out by the pool

If you stay at the same guesthouse we did then you will find a beautiful pool with views overlooking a river valley flanked by palms and a sheer valley wall which beautifully reflects the evening sun. It’s a great place to relax and unwind after the busy road trip and enjoy the quietude and slow pace of desert life.

The perfect place to relax, the beautiful pool where we stayed at the Auberge Camping Atlas

Where to Stay near Todra Gorge

We spent one night near the gorge as it’s a reasonably long drive and we wanted to visit at sunrise and sunset when it was quiet. In hindsight we actually wish we’d spent longer as we found a great guest house and it was very peaceful out in the desert. So, on this Morocco itinerary, we will recommend spending two nights here.

Budget – A Secret Garden

To be honest it’s only a little cheaper than the next option where we stayed but is also a great option. Situated in a beautiful location surrounded by greenery, the property offers beautiful views from the balcony, where you can enjoy the excellent breakfast offered.

Mid-Range – Auberge Camping Atlas

This is where we stayed and can highly recommend. The pool is a great feature and offers really nice views, the perfect place to relax after a hard mornings hiking. They also offer camp sites for those with the vehicles or equipment to facilitate this. The breakfast and dinner were both of good quality and the rooms were comfortable.

Splurge – Auberge Le Festival Todra Gorge

This place is styled like a castle in the desert with fantastic design and some really cool cave style rooms. Decorated in Berber style and offering loads of activities, this is a great place to stay to really immerse yourself in the location. There’s a hot tub, organic garden and nightly traditional music. Combined with the good food and even better views, you can’t go wrong.

Ouarzazate

Following our stay in Todra Gorge we returned to Ouarzazate and spent one night before flying out the following morning. This doesn’t have to be the end of your trip, as there are a number of options to extend the trip, both with the car and via trips arranged in Ouarzazate.

Check out the tour options below if you have some extra time and aren’t quite ready to go home! If you fly out from Ouarzazate then make sure you get to the airport with some time to spare, returning the car was actually hassle free but there was only one guy working so it was difficult to find him initially and if there were multiple returns I imagine it could take a while.

Where to Stay in Ouarzazate

Riad Ouarzazate

If you choose to spend a night or two here, Riad Ouarzazate makes a great choice. Both the interior and exterior are beautifully decorated, the rooms are comfortable, they serve a delicious breakfast and the staff is very friendly. They will also organize transportation to the airport.

We stayed here on the final night of our 10 days in Morocco and found it to be a lovely place! It is quite popular due to it’s high ratings, so if it isn’t available click here to browse more accommodations in Ouarzazate.
